“The staff bent over backwards to make our trip special.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2009

We stayed in the Hotel Roanoke last weekend and were very happy with our stay...and we are picky! What we loved most is the ambience, with lovely sitting areas in the lobby, and rocking chairs on the porch, cozy bar area and porches everywhere. The hotel is absolutely huge, and grounds are pretty, with a walkway over the railroad tracks right into downtown Roanoke. Our room was nicely appointed, and we don't mind making our own coffee. Suzanne who works at the front desk offered to move us into a suite if we wanted, but we liked our room. It's charming, and doesn't feel like a chain hotel.

Parking is $7/night (self parking); valet parking is $12/night; complimentary coffee isn't complimentary... you fix it yourself for $1.50/cup; in-room wireless isn't free... it's $9.95/night.

Worst part... the bathrooms don't have any ventilation... the vents for the fans are blocked. Go figure. Shower steam and smells go right into the sleeping area. Disgusting and embarrassing.

Way overrated and overpriced. We spent over $100 for an average dinner in the hotel's restaurant; the room was over $150 plus taxes and tips; plus parking, coffee, and Internet. Can't recommend it. Not in this economy.

Lovely surroundings, upscale rooms (comparable to the Ritz Carlton I stayed in a while back). Great place for a getaway weekend or a business meeting (looks like they have impressive conference facilities). Sunday breakfast buffet included everything from bagels, lox, and capers, to omelets and lychee fruit--very nice.

There's a walkway across the square leading to the old downtown (five minute walk) with shops, restaurants, farmer's market, and an art museum.

Recommend it highly.

The hotel had incredible details and elegance. I loved the room and had a great sleep there. The skyway bridge leads you from the hotel to two excellent night spots with live music and good food.

Hotel Roanoke really is a great place. as soon as you drive up, you know you are arriving at a special hotel. As some reviews have said, yes it is a old style hotel (because it is a rennovated OLD hotel!) but the rooms are VERY nice, the ammenities are GREAT, and I really enjoy the hotel. My wife and I had our wedding reception there in 1999 and they have done a lot to rennovate the rooms since then. Our hotel room was very nice, the besd are great, and the bathrooms were nicely done. The bathroom was a little small, but it IS a old hotel - remember? :) They are completely redone and very nice. The Pine ROom bar is very cool, and you must have breakfast in the Regency Room. The food and service are excellent! I hope I can find a reason to travel to Roanoke again soon so I can stay at this hotel again!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2009

We spent last night at this hotel on a stopover on our road journey from Atlanta to Connecticut. We were a party of eight and two rooms had been booked for us without any warning of what to expect. Driving onto the property we were immediately taken aback. The grounds are fabulous, well kept and the hotel from outside is quite elegant with a Tudor style architecture. As we drove up in our huge 14 passenger van we were immediately approached by staff with an offer to help unload the luggage. We declined valet parking as we planned to go out soon after check in and did not want to spend time for our vehicle to be retrieved. We sent over one member of the party to complete the check in formalities. She was attended to quickly and then given 8 chocolate chip cookies, one for each guest. The cookies were warm , soft and chocolaty- a welcome treat at the end of a long day of driving. One suggestion, how about some milk to go with the cookie? Our son who is hard to please went to use the restroom while waiting for us to be checked in. He returned awed with a dazed look saying the bathrooms were so "luxurious" that they were better than anything he had experienced in a very long time!! We checked out the rooms first. Both rooms were spotlessly clean and appointed with two double beds each, an alarm clock, a Phillips flat screen TV, hairdryer, coffee machine, iron with ironing board. I greatly appreciate the fact that the bedside lamp had two outlets - a must nowadays given all the gadgets that needed recharging (iphones, blackberries, portable hand held game devices, laptops etc). We checked out the room service menu but found it too pricey for our budget. While checking in we had requested a cot for one of the rooms and by the time we got from the car to our rooms the cot had been delivered. We called for extra towels and my wife mistakenly said we need 4 towel sets rather than one more set to make 4. The towels were delivered within 10 mins. I have not experienced such speedy service too often. More amazingly housekeeping followed up with a phone call inquiring if our towels were delivered as requested and whether we had any questions or concerns regarding that service. Well I do have a question- how does management motivate their staff to provide this level of service? We could use some of that spirit in our office!!

The lobby, lounge-sitting area has an exclusive male club feel to it and one almost expects to run into someone twirling his mustache and smoking a cigar while checking the time on a gold pocket watch. There is an elegant pub with a billiard table and a fireplace. The hotel is located across from a trains station and one gets to the downtown area by use of a steel and glass enclosed walkway over the tracks. The downtown area has boutique shops and wonderful restaurants but you need to be aware that the area is dead in the evenings- at least on a Monday evening. There is ample parking at least when there is no huge conference scheduled. For reasons that are not logical to me one has to get a ticket every time one goes into the lot at which time a barrier arm goes up to allow access to the lot. The expectation is that one pays a fee based on time parked on the way out - wrong, there is no attendant on the way out. So now I have accumulated 3 tickets with nioo way to pay them. Perhaps money is collected when there are a lot of people attending a conference. We did not get anything for free however and were charged $7 parking fee on our room bill fair enough as we were warned before hand that parking is not free. I was very taken aback that wireless internet service costs 9.95 a day. This is not cool. Internet access is no longer a perk but a necessity and hotels doing this are behind the times. If one is going to have ridiculous charges why not a charge for using the restroom? That is equally offensive.

Incidentally the showers have good water pressure and they provide ample hot water.

Needs work..things appear a bit dated. Has a lot of upside potential if they would spend the $$$$$ on the rooms. Hosted an affair there 2 years ago....ok food, serving staff walked off with the expensive leftovers. Felt a bit robbed.

Dear Tunatoo, thank you for your feedback. In 2008, the Hotel Roanoke completed a $6.5 million renovation of all guestrooms and cooridors on the Hotel side and are currently embarking on a renovation of our lobby and conference center facility. We are working diligently to preserve the traditional look of our unique and historic hotel while adding modern touches that today's travelers expect and deserve. We are dissapointed to hear about your event and hope you will reconsider The Hotel Roanoke in the future. We think you will be more than pleased with the progress and changes taking place.
