“Old Dame re-done”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

This famous hotel has been gussied up as best as possible, but the reality is that it's an old hotel. But, its common areas are very nice and the conference center is terrific. The restaurant was excellent. The wifi excellent. The staff very accommodating

The hotel and grounds are beautiful. I tried to book a Jr. suite as we were traveling as a family of four and I knew the two double beds in a regular room would be tight. They did not have the suite so we did stay in a regular room. The room was not big enough for a family and was not equipped for four guests. We were short towels and amenities. I would think a hotel of this caliber would make sure their rooms are well stocked. I had to call the front desk and leave a note for house keeping to replace needed items. The Regency Room does offer a decent breakfast. On the morning of December 31st everything was great. The service and food were top notch but on Jan 1st everything went out the window. The service and food were terrible. The staff had no control over the flow of guests or the amount of food and long ridiculous line at the buffet. They clearly needed help with the management of the crowd. It is a shame that the breakfast buffet left such a bad taste in our mouths. If we return to the area I will certainly research other accommodations as I do not feel we experienced the quality of a top notch hotel.

Room Tip: If traveling with a family book a suite as early as possible.

Dear HonestyVirginia, thank you for your review and for choosing us for your accommodations. I apologize for the inconvenience experienced and have shared your review along with implementing corrective measures based on the experience you've written about. While we are a historical hotel with varying room sizes, it is unacceptable to not have a room comfortably stocked, as well service issues have been well addressed regarding the restaurant. I understand your frustration and can assure you this is not at all our practice. I do hope if you find yourself in the area again that will allow us to serve you again and show you our best side.

Sincerely,
Gary Walton

This hotel had a very large room, comfortable beds and was well-appointed. The Pine Room was recently updated and the service there was good and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Many people came and went and were served well. The valet service was quick and efficient. Food we had in the Pine Room was plentiful and good.

We stay at the Hotel Roanoke for the warm reception we receive at check in, the warm cookies and the excellent facilities offered. It was a cold rainy day outside, but our warm cookies in the nice HHonors room made the stay enjoyable. We had a nice drink in the Pine Room Bar to relax, but the meal in the Regency Dining Room was the ultimate in enjoyment. You must start with the Virginia Peanut Soup then anything on the menu is excellent, such as Filet Mignon, Fresh Trout, Shrimp and Grits. The host makes you feel so good about being there. The hotel lobby with the massive fireplace and inviting easy chairs make you want to just sit, read, and enjoy the quiet. We found the staff to be as efficient and business-like as you expect at a Doubletree Resort but also friendly like you want to make your stay pleasant. We will go back, soon.

The New Year's Eve celebration was quite wonderful and my husband and I were delighted to get away for 24 hours! The complimentary breakfast the next morning, however, was quite a disaster - the hotel should do a MUCH better job regarding feeding it's "morning after" guests. No coffee the morning after "New Year's Eve" - completely unacceptable!

Couldn't help but spread a little hometown pride by reviewing the Grand Old Dame. My husband and I stayed for the New Year Celebration this year. Check in was quick and the staff was very pleasant.

The room was clean except for one of my pet peeves which was mold on the tiles in shower. I couldn't believe what I was seeing - almost made me cry as I expected much more from this hotel! Was pleased we did not have to play with the thermostat. Never had to touch it.

The ballroom where the event was held was large, tastefully decorated. The food was really quite tasty for a buffet. The dessert and coffee buffet at 10:30 was a little sparse but also tasty.

Our overnight rest was peaceful. For such an old building, I really felt the soundproofing was quite good.

We had the breakfast buffet in the Regency Room on New Year's Day. This room has recently been updated and they did a good job in keeping with the historic characteristics of the building while freshening things up a bit. The food was fresh and warm.

If you are visiting Roanoke and want to partake in the nightlife, Hotel Roanoke is really convenient. We stayed in this time, but in the past have stayed and walked to the downtown area.

BTW, you don't have to pay for parking sometimes, you just need to know where to look. We parked on the street right by the O Winston Link Museum. There are no time restrictions there from, I believe, 6pm to 8am; otherwise its 2 hours. By parking here, you can get on the elevator to the covered walkway leading to the front of the hotel.

I still think the price is a little high for our area but we were looking for a treat. I felt we got what we were looking for in the end.

Our travels brought us to Roanoke again (actually, we were just passing thru this time). Fortunately the Hotel Roanoke, always our first choice in Roanoke, had vacancies so we made a reservation. We found no changes from our last stay-everything was still top-notch. The evening was bitterly cold, so we decided to stay in this time and visited the Pine Room Pub. The food and drink was great, but the atmosphere is unmatched. It felt like we were sitting in one of those great classic Christmas movies, like Holiday Inn or White Christmas. The Pine Room was originally a World War II-era Officers Club for the Army post that was here then, so the feeling is probably not much off the mark. Real wood, classic design, cozy-I definitely recommend giving it a try if you stay at the Hotel Roanoke.
