This is an historic property and so it doesn't have some of the amenities of newer properties: microwaves, refrigerators, an indoor pool, but the efforts of the staff on hand make up for it.
We stayed for a busy Va tech football weekend. Our late check-in was handled with no issue and we appreciated the valet service and separate desk for Hilton Honors guests. Disappointed to see that the extra towels and waters pre-ordered were not in our room - in fact we only had 3 towels for a 2 queen room and no shampoo. As with many hotels these days - housekeeping can make or break the visit. The front desk sent them up right away as soon as I stopped by.
The Pine Room was nice for post-drive drinks. Sports on the tvs, billiards, a lively crowd and live music. Impressive scotch selection. Clearly a familiar-to-some bar mistress and cloudy glasses meant they trade on the out of towners staying there and long time locals. The weather was rainy or we definitely would have enjoyed the outdoor gas firepit.
We stayed on the Executive floor - separated by a keyed entry. Quiet halls, with an executive lounge offering light hors d' oeuvres (smoked salmon and chicken salad wraps post-game) and continental breakfast fare, coffees, fruit and sodas at no charge. The hours of the lounge were pretty limited ending at 9:30am and 9pm in the evening. Other than that the lone room perk seemed to be the plush robes available and wi-fi?
Breakfast in the Regency Dining Room was good, if pricey. Great old school service - very attentive even though we had the buffet. We were in a hurry to leave for the Tech game and didn't really get to enjoy the experience; wished there had been a less formal option available on property. Room service one evening for 2 scoops of ice cream and a bread pudding with two glasses of milk was $30 so not a value alternative.
Walking to and from your car if you choose to self-park will be a jaunt. Valet is $12 per day.
The hotel is a cool old property with local history and is within an enclosed bridge walk from points of interest. It's clearly a property of choice for special occasions and business events and the staff does make an effort, when asked, to take care of their guests. I just felt overbilled compared to other properties. As I mentioned in a review of a Roanoke restaurant - it's all relative and this must be one of Roanoke's finest.
Due to the cost, I might try the Hyatt Place or a Hilton Garden Inn for more value for my spend next time.
