“Beautiful historic hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

The is a beautiful hotel. It is easy to get to from the highway and has friendly and helpful staff. We had a gorgeous corner room with comfortable accommodations. The movie prices were OUTRAGEOUS though! $17.00 to rent a movie on TV? Also, there are two restaurants. The one is VERY fancy, expensive and could be intimidating if you are traveling and only have casual clothes to wear. This restaurant offered a full dinner menu. The second restaurant is a casual Pub/ bar atmosphere but a very limited menu. We could not order a full dinner which is what we would have preferred. The food was basically appetizers, burgers and sandwiches. They should consider expanding this menu to include more choices. All in all, we enjoyed the hotel and would return if we are in that area.

Room Tip: Corner room is large and comfortable with windows on two walls.

Have to admit that when the opportunity to stay at this hotel presented itself, I jumped all over it. Was not disappointed in the least! From the ease of check-in (with the trademark warm chocolate chip cookies) to the friendly and accomodating staff, we had a more than satisfactory stay at this Grand Hotel! The weather was beautiful which, of course, made the stay even nicer, but the atmosphere alone here would have been enough to ensure a great experience. They don't build hotels like this anymore, with its rich wood and colorful murals. Even the elevators had chandeliers!! The portraits of Washington and Lee in the lobby are spectacular. Please take the time to look at all the photos which depict the hotel from days gone by. You will find them everywhere! We had a corner room on the 5th floor which was a bit small but still comfortable and quite charming (had the appearance of a dormer). And we were able to see the famous Roanoke Star from our room each evening!! We did not eat at any of the hotel restaurants, but did utilize the executive lounge for breakfast and evening snacks. Not a tremendous selection but what was offered was quite good and filling. The lounge staff was so pleasant and helpful, talking with guests and really providing lots of area-related tibits. However, the lounge needs a different coffee maker. The one they have is way too slow for the breakfast crowd! Something I learned hanging out in the lounge: there is a 7th floor here, which is one huge suite!! If there is no one occuping this suite, they will take you up there to see it. And there is a story behind this floor, so check it out!! We had a great time here and look forward to another stay in the future.

Very pleasant stay. Extremely comfortable rooms. Staff helpful and friendly. Self parking not worth it - go with valet. Compared to other urban areas I have stayed, extremely good value for an excellent hotel.

Thought it would be nice to stay in sort of a grand hotel, but it wasn't . Check-in was ok, but the small, cramped room stunk of smoke, enough so we asked for a room freshener. The supervisor who came up didn't think it was smoke, but didn't know what it was. The worst part of the "experience" was Sat. nite around 7pm we came back to have dinner in their empty fine dining rm. and we're told we would have to come back in a half hour( they were short staffed). Had a quiet, relaxing dinner in the pub with the Ohio-Penn St. football fans! Beverage mgr. apologized and svc. there was great, but really?! Business Center was good

We booked the Hotel Roanoke for the third year running, this time for a wedding outside of town at a nameless vineyard. My grandmother told me if you can't say something positive, say nothing. The poor quality of all of the wines except for the cabernet franc shall ensure anonymity. But the Hotel Roanoke made up for the wedding venue's wine inadequacies. Our room was again comfortable, this time located on the west/northwest side overlooking the outdoor swimming pool. Our bed was large, comfortable and guaranteed a good night's sleep. The bath was more than enough space to shower, apply make-up and shave (not all done by the same person!). The best part of the stay here, besides the numerous bride sightings around the hotel (we counted three and learned we had missed two more!), was the following morning's al la carte breakfast in the dining room. When i told our waiter of my allergy requirements, out came gluten-free toast within ten minutes and the line cook was delighted to prepare an omelet without milk and butter. The Hotel Roanoke is our default hotel in the Roanoke area because we love the friendliness of the check-in clerks, waiters and housekeepers, the stateliness of the hotel that harkens back to the grandeur of the steam locomotive era, and the first quality accommodations. Parking yourself and leaving your car down below the hotel grounds is a viable low-cost option to having your car receive the valet treatment.

Room Tip: We have stayed in rooms at the front, to the right (looking from the outside), the rear and the back...

This hotel is historical, elegant, and convenient;although Roanoke itself is a beautiful city the Hotel Roanoke added to our time there. Located on the edge of downtown the hotel is near several museums, restaurants, and shopping. An enclosed walkway across from the hotel allows you to easily walk into downtown while crossing over the nearby railroad tracks. The hotel was easy to find and provided either self-parking ($7) or valet parking ($12). Found the staff to be helpful and friendly, and our room, although not large, was nicely decorated and comfortable. The bathroom as well. There was an upper and lower lobby - both with pleasant sitting areas. Enjoyed an outside courtyard area with an assortment of comfortable furniture. Coffeepots inthe room and a beautiful restaurant that serves an affordable breakfast. We'll be back!

Room Tip: Executive rooms are on the second floor and require going up to short flights of stairs - no elevat...

When I booked this I was expecting the usual reliable but basic Doubletree experience based on the price we paid so I was pleasantly surprised when we pulled up in front of a large, Tudor-style mansion. The reception area was very inviting with armchairs and a log fire and it was obviously a posh place judging from all the university students who had gathered there for pre-dinner homecoming pictures. The hotel was just a short walk away from all the restaurants and bars in Roanoke, through a covered walkway above the railway line (which has interesting plaques on the history of the railway). The hotel has a good bar which we made the most of after dinner in Roanoke so what was originally simply a convenient place to stop on our way down South turned into a very pleasant evening.
