“Great place for kids and adults who love trains!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

Very nice exhibits and ready access to vintage trains. Nice selection of railroad memorabilia and a bunch of great old cars as well. Thomas the train lovers will enjoy the model trains running around. Go on a special day when they are offering $2 train rides on the siding there for a special treat.

“Great Museum!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

We visited in August 2012 with our sons who love trucks and trains. It was a really worthwhile stop as we got to see many historic trucks inside the building and huge trains and train cars outside the building. They also had a really nice model train layout of the city of Roanoke complete with star. The staff was very nice and we especially enjoyed talking with the staff/volunteer gentleman who drove a Greyhound bus for many years. He was great! Be sure to check out the ship made from various household items. Neat!

“Wings over Virginia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

We love the Virginia Museum of Transportation. We are members. We joined because my two year old son loves trains. Our favorite part is the outdoor rail yard. Additionally, the museum borders a very active section of Norfolk Southern track so one can frequently see trains going by. Additionally, the museum works very hard to have special events that often include short train rides for a small ($2) fee. During these special events they have many hands on activities. Recently, they just opened the Wings over Virginia exhibit. During the opening, they had several men present who were highlighted in the exhibits. During the opening weekend, one could fly a glider simulator, get in another flight simulator and sit in an authentic fighter plane cockpit. My son's other favorite area is the large model train exhibit that runs constantly inside. Additionally, if you go upstairs you will be treated to a mind blowing circus model that is astounding in detail.

“Cool!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

This museum is very interactive. It has a great outside part with old restored trains that u can go into. Trains are always going by which makes the experience come alive. Very good for kids and adults. There was a commercial being shot at the museum while we were there with Maryanne from Gilligans Island.
