Last year, I was reading a Garden and Gun magazine article about roanoke, with all its offerings, and decided to put it on the list to pick from for our next long weekend. After some tripadvisor research and running across The Inn on Campbell, with it's crazy approval rating, I set my sights for a late Feb weekend. I liked the concept; bed and breakfast hospitality with an urban loft feel and downtown convenience.
Cindy called the night before to see about special requests, food allergies, and arrival time. I knew from the couple minutes on the phone I'd like her, just a good vibe. Upon arrival, my wife and I were greeted by Keith who showed us the perfectly useful first floor and the awesome palladium suite. Keith was great too, he answered any questions we had, gave advice on dinner and music, and shared anecdotal info on the surroundings. We explored the room, downstairs and headed out on the town with Keith's suggestions. I've got to stop here and explain about the bed. Cindy and Keith have spared no expense to make your sleep memorable and possibly the best you've ever had. I mean Scandia down mattress topper, with a Scandia comforter and microfiber Comphy sheets. I can't explain it, but you'll wanna buy that bed before you leave.
The next morning, all subsequent mornings for that matter, Keith would come up about thirty minutes or so before our agreed upon breakfast time, and we'd chat. Soon after Cindy would arrive to put the finishing touches together. Their breakfast is a full on three or four course ordeal and they fittingly take pride in their culinary skills. One of the surprising delights though, was talking to them both. They are fun, laid back and have some great stories to tell.
Long story short, The Inn on Campbell deserves all the accolades they get. The Inn on its own, would get 5 stars. But the service (they actually leave port, ferrero roche, and espresso for you to enjoy anytime) and the innkeepers themselves, set this destination apart. We will be back. Oh and by the way, with Cindy's help we got that bed!
