“a great surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2014

This B & B was like no other . We love to find charming, upscale B & B's when we travel in the US. This one is a find. The finest amenities, mattress (I didn't even know Vera Wang MADE mattresses, i peeked because I loved it so much that I want the same one at my home), exceptional breakfast, very friendly and helpful owners, luxury antiques, immaculate, etc. A little hard to find but well worth the price and the effort.

Room Tip: we only saw one room on the main floor.

We stayed in the largest room which is like a private appartment with its own lobby within the house.
Everything was new and 101% clean; room was huge, bathroom modern with plenty of very nice amenities.
Breakfast, very good, whenever you feel like it.
It was really nice to see fresh flowers all around the house including our room.

We loved our stay at the Black Lantern Inn! The house is a beautifully renovated historic home with many modern touches. The food was delicious, with fine dining versions of favorite classics including the best scrambled eggs and french toast I have ever tasted. Ron was the best host. He was helpful with dining recommendations based on what we were looking for, information about things to do, as well as helpful hints such as where best to park when we went downtown to one of the museums. We enjoyed talking with him, not only about the city but also about shared interest. This B&B has the best of everything!

Room Tip: Venetian was very private by itself on the first floor. We felt like the living room (with TV and st...

So this was my first B&B experience, and Ron's Inn not only delivered an exquisite place to stay, but also an enduring and friendly atmosphere in which people can freely communicate. I was also very grateful that Ron was able to put together a brilliant vegetarian breakfast for me, since it has always been difficult for establishments to accommodate people who share vegetarian diets.

Big shout out to Ron and his inspiring inn. Thanks also for the great life advice and keep in touch!

We stayed in the Venetian room, which is even better than indicated by the pics on the website. Great bed; nice linens, plush towels, beautiful bathroom, interesting choices in art and decor, delicious breakfast. Owners were terrific - they have done a wonderful job of creating an excellent b&b priced at well below fair market value. You won't be sorry!

My wife and I stay in inns or B&B's as often as possible when we travel. The Black Lantern is the BEST we've ever stayed in. Some of the highlights:
1. Meticulously restored historic house.
2. Absolutely immaculately kept.
3. Ron is a genuinely caring host, who also did all the renovations and is a fabulous chef, too. A true renaissance man!
4. Rooms are gorgeous.
5. Beer, wine and soda always available on site.
6. Access to each of two kitchens night and day.
7. Three beautiful porches provide wonderful views and privacy if desired.
8. Grounds are as beautiful and as meticulous as the house.
9. Two very nice bicycles allow a nice tour of town.
10. Very helpful rack of maps and menus.
If you are in the Roanoke area, staying any where else would be second best. Thanks Ron, for an incredible stay!

This restored historic house was the star of our recent five week tour of the Eastern States.
Beautiful craftsmanship combined with attention to detail and a host for which nothing was to much trouble left us wishing we had stayed longer in this exquisite property.
All this and as well as his construction skills Ron also cooks a superb breakfast.
Forget hotels this goes way beyond what they provide,at the Black Lantern you are staying in something that is loved.
