As I was staying three nights, I wasn't willing to spend the big bucks for the Hotel Roanoke. Last time (two years ago) I stayed at the Days Inn which was terrible. This place looked OK from the reviews, and the price was good. As it turns out, it's better than the Days Inn, but it's still pretty basic. The room was small, with no opening windows. It had a fridge and microwave, but curiously no coffee maker (common for Econo Lodges). The breakfast bar was also pretty basic, with donuts, sweet rolls and bagels, juice, and weak coffee.
The hotel is difficult to get into and out of. It's located on Orange Ave. (US-460), which is a six-lane divided highway. Access is only to or from the westbound direction, and the two intersections on either side do not allow u-turns. At busy times, it can be a bit of a challenge getting out of the parking lot because of all the traffic--much of which will be turning onto I-581 just west of the hotel.
The hotel is fairly near downtown Roanoke, which has a variety of restaurants and night-spots. It is also not far from the airport.
