“Rooms need more Tender Loving Care”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2008

There's a collection of midrange/low-range hotels clustered around the Extended Stay Roanoke Airport. First off, this "Airport" hotel is 2.5 miles away. No shuttle bus for you, you'll need to take a cab if you're not renting a car. Half the hotel fronts an interstate spur, so unless you have the air conditioning cranked up, you'll be hearing occasional cars zooming a hundred feet or so outside your window.

The kitchen area of the room was completely nice (I suspect business travelers probably don't take advantage of cooking in their rooms frequently), with a toaster, a microwave, pots and pans, a two burner stove with a steam catcher, and a kitchen sink. My single bed room came with two work tables and two desk chairs, so that was a nice comfy place to sit down and work when I had the time.

In the bathroom you'll find: little bar soaps. period. No shampoo, conditioner or any other liquid amenities you'd expect in a hotel.

Being a traditional extended stay hotel (these hotels saves personnel costs by not doing daily housekeeping), you'll get housekeeping at least once per week but not daily. So if you want your bed made up or trash taken out, do it yourself before you leave in the morning. ;-) I did discover a card in the bathroom that stated the rules: "full service" housekeeping is done once per week or if you want it on demand, that'll be $10 please. Another housekeeping service is called "Refresh", which is another term for "limited housekeeping" (i.e. replacing towels, emptying trash, making bed with existing linens) and that's $5 a pop.

Next to the office you'll find a laundry room with vending machines, so you'll be able to get your laundry done and find a nice selection of sugar enhanced drinks & snacks. The nearest snack store is at least a half mile down the road so if you didn't come with a car, you'll be doing a nice healthy walk.

The furniture in my room, as well as another room I visited, looked somewhat beat up. A couple of my room's walls had some white paint touch ups which really looked cheap. In other words, the overall maintenance of the hotel is fine, but the furniture and rooms themselves need more TLC.

Wireless works, but took a few minutes to get set up and actually working on my Macintosh laptop. Costs $5 per day.

Room phone extensions inexplicably don't match the room numbers (e.g. to reach room 228, you need to dial 7928), so if you're lucky, you might get a call from another guest attempting to guess the number of another room around you.

  • Liked — Kitchen area is equipped well enough to cook
  • Disliked — Room furnishings are somewhat beat up; rooms need some maintenance & care

We stayed 3 nights at the Extended America Hotel just off the highway in Roanoke, Virginia. The room was spacious and had the kitchenette complete with 2 burners, microwave, and full size fridge. Wireless internet was available for a flat fee of $5 for the whole stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful in recommending places to eat. I recommend eating dinner/lunch at Loganns. Really good steak and 2 sides for a mere $12.

I had to stay overnight in Roanoke for a business event, and Extended Stay was what Priceline gave me.

The hotel itself was fine, getting to it was much more difficult. The directions I received from the website were wrong - I had to call the hotel and have them guide me from several miles away. It was late at night; perhaps I could have found it on my own in daylight, but I don't think so.

The man who helped me on the phone and then checked me in was friendly, but clearly wanted to get me checked in so he could go back to watching tv in the office.

The room was clean but on the rundown side - the bathroom countertop was in bad shape. It wasn't a problem as I was only there for a night, but I wouldn't have been happy with that room for longer than that. And that's an issue, as it's designed to be a place for business travelers on longer stays.

I wished that Extended Stay would make accessing their wi-fi simpler. This was the second time I've stayed at ES, and logging on to the internet both times took too long. I appreciate that it's free or cheap, so I guess you get what you pay for.

There was black mold in the bathroom, on the ceiling and showerhead. The linolium was cracked although they said that was being replaced. The beds remained unmade. The staff did not know how to use the computers.

I recommend looking elsewhere.

I have stayed at this hotel probably 8 times over the last year and a half and am always pleased. The rooms are spacious with a full-sized refrigerator, microwave, dresser, recliner and one or two small tables. The bed sheets are always fresh, white, and crisp; the bathroom is always spotless; and the dishes are always clean. The hotel just feels newer than most and the young man at the front desk in the evening is always friendly. The 8 times I've stayed the only problem I've had was a remote control that didn't work. This hotel is also quiet because it's down a side road off the Interstate. If you need a nice, clean room on a budget, this place is a good choice. Note that there was a $25 refundable deposit if you paid with cash.
