“Alter Your Thinking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2011

When assessing this hotel the word "hotel" is very misleading. We stayed here in August along with our six pets as evacuees from Hurricane Irene. The Airport Plaza "Hotel" is less a hotel and more of a really, really amazing and affordable hostel. If you approach it with this mindset you will not be disappointed.

This "hotel" is a wonderful value for the price, for about $25-50/night you get a very well stocked, nice size room. Each room includes a mini fridge with freezer, microwave, tv, table with chairs, iron and ironing board, as well as a hair dryer. No, the rooms are not immaculately clean, there isn't always someone at the front desk, and there are lots of people gathered in the front lobby on the computers or chatting. But, these are all things you expect walking into a hostel.

And, to top it off, the service was great, they didn't even charge us the additional fee for our pets as we were evacuating from the hurricane. My husband, mother and father-in-law couldn't have been happier with our stay. Alter your thinking, don't expect luxury, and you will be happy too. This place is perfect for people traveling with pets, on a budget, or large families. The price cannot be beat!

Room Tip: The rooms on the first floor are perfect for people with pets with direct access to the large back y...

My family stayed here for a family reunion for three nights. This place was Run Down! Looks absolutely nothing like the pictures posted online. This place has only one working elevator and it smelled of body odor. All of the rooms were dirty, poorly lit and smelled musty, combined with body odor/urine. The bathrooms looked like they hadn't been cleaned in months, no toilet paper, dirt not dust in every corner! We had to go buy cleaning supplies (Clorox wipes and Lysol) to clean the bathrooms before using them. We were registered for three (3) days, the hotel provides two (2), yes two towels per room "per stay" not per day, per stay and no daily housekeeping. We had to go out and Buy towels. When we inquired about more towels, the owner informed me that he uses a towel several time before washing it. Oh, did I forget to mention that the towels were so thin you could practically see thru them! The wireless was spotty at best! Signal was weak .The beds were okay, I was afraid to look at the mattress!!! The small dining room was Filthy, so we passed on the expanded breakfast that consist of a few day old micro waved pancakes, biscuits and link sausages. The Pool: Ugh... the water was cloudy! This place rents by the week to people that live there, and one night there were several Police cars there! You Get What You Pay For! At the price this place charges, you got slightly better than sleeping on the street! Wait, actually sleeping on the street would be cleaner, better and probably safer! If you stay here be prepared to provide towels, washcloths and a sleeping bag because you will not want to climb in the bed.

If there are positive reviews on here, I'm pretty sure they are being posted by the hotel owner, staff or the people that live at this hotel and rent weekly. No one in their right mind would ever say staying at this place was a good experience or use the word “clean” to describe anything at this place. This is not the kind of place for families and or singles women.

The lesson here is... If the price seems too good to be true, RUN!!!!!!!!

we go into ronoke alot and last time we stayed at the airport plaza hotel. it isn't the cleanest place but hey not many of us are born with a silver spoon in our moths right? in the room there were some dirt and stains but hey most of our houses have those too so we didn't mind it too much. the hotel is in a good location since its rite beside the interstate which was kinda loud but we're used to it were we live. the service was great and all. we will definitly be back soon!

by far the most run down, dirty, scariest place I have ever stayed.
Rooms smelled of mold (and who knows what else)-burn holes and stains on the blankets and sheets. I found a lava of some sort on the sheets. The carpets smelled-toliet had molded all around the bottome. Hairs (from down there) were all over the bedspread and blanket.
I personally witnessed a lady of the evening checking in with her 2 "friends"

I've never written a hotel review before but after one night at the Roanoke Howard Johnson, I feel the need to warn others. My room smelled like cat pee, my mother's smelled like bug spray. When we pulled the stained comforter down, the bed sheets actually had cigarette burns! There was a can of bug spray visable in the hall on a pipe. Not a good sign. The ice machine was filthy as were the tile floors in the hall and the elevators. The mattress had a dried brown substance dripped down the side. We arrived at 11 PM and were very tired. We knew we would never get a refund from the front desk staff and had to be up at 5 AM. We literally slept in our clothes and shoes for a few hours and chalked it up to experience. Next time, I will ask to see a room before paying.

Stayed here for a night recently.
It is a mess. Photos on the hotel website must be years out of date. Place is very run down - grounds are overgrown, paint has flaked of the walls and is all over the grounds. Business Centre ! is 2 old PCs in the grotty lobby and all the keyboards stick. Owners don't seem to care - had difficulty getting someone to come to reception just to check out.
No coffee in the morning at breakfast except the pot that I suspect had been brewing all night. Food was very suspect and avoided.
I think the Department of Health needs to shut this place down NOW.

Traveling back from North Carolina to PA, we stopped overnight to stay at this hotel because they allow dogs. We have a small and well behaved chihuahua. The rates seemed really reasonable and they included an "expanded" breakfast.

We arrived at the front desk around midnight. First bad sign was that the check in guy was super slow, took forever to get us checked in, even though we were the only ones there at that time.

Our rooms were on the second floor, 225 and 227. My husband and I had a room with a king bed, and our two kids had a room with two doubles.

The room decor was pretty grim, even for the low price. it was clearly outdated and old furniture that had been there for years. The carpet was very dirty, looked like it had rarely been vacuumed or shampood. The room was a no smoking room but smelled of smoke. The bathroom was in bad shape, with lots of dirt in the corners, cracks in the tile and in the corners with filthy black dirt in them, and a tub with black flecks on the bottom. Everything was really old and in need of total renovation. And it just did not look like it had been cleaned at all. The towels were really thin and small. Our bed was ok but one pillow case had a cigarette burn hole in it. We didn't check the mattress, and I am scared to think what it looks like after seeing some of the other comments written about this place.

The lighting was all compact fluorescent giving a creepy yellow glow to everything. The place was just dirty, and the hallways smelled of pet urine. Guess some of their other pet guests did not take their potty walks outside.

Internet service in the room was very spotty and did not work most of the time.

The free breakfast was pathetic and awful, they put a few frozen Aunt Jemima toaster waffles in a metal pan, and had cold coffee and a few stale pastries and had not refilled anything else. The breakfast room was a sorry looking place, and the food looked like it had been re-warmed from days prior. Nothing that should have been hot was hot, and nothing that should have been cold was cold. Really gross presentation of food overall. We chose not to eat it but to go elsewhere for breakfast.

The back seat from a car was sitting outside the front door in the morning. Not sure why this would be sitting by the front door. Didn't look too nice. Cleaning and maintenance workers were gathered outside the front door loudly shooting the breeze. Made me feel like I was in some flophouse in mexico.

I can't believe this place is even considered worthy of a Howard Johnson's flag. It is an absolute disgrace and a total misrepresentation of the description of the property in online info. There are better hotels nearby - I'd recommend you stay elsewhere even if it means paying a higher price. This place is dirty, poorly maintained, and does not deliver even the basics very well.
