“Exceptional Customer Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2007

I stayed here with my two teenage daughters for a mom/daughter get away. The hotel lobby is beautiful - the staff is exceptionally friendly - doesn't matter if they are just walking in the hall - they make a point to say hello as well when you walk by their front desk (they truly make you feel welcomed). I was worried because I read someones review about the beds being uncomfortable, but I was quite happy with the comfort of the bed - I felt very cozy with the duvet - loved it!!! I am a frequent traveler and am very picky with hotels and would highly recommend this hotel. The pool was a bit boring due to the fact that it was not too huge and was 3 1/2 feet at one end and 4 1/2 feet at the other - wasn't that big, but did the trick for our stay. It was a bit dirty and a little cool, but when you got in a moved around, you were ok. I think the hotel could use a new hot tub - looked a bit out dated. But the customer service of this hotel made up for it. We were on the 15th floor and had a wonderful view of the water and the boats - the room had a refigerator in it - came in handy a couple times. The bathroom is nice and large. - free internet in the lobby (not in the rooms though). The ferry is right outside the hotel to get to Norfolk, VA, - just a 6 minute ride for $1 a person each way.

I have stayed here several times with my boyfriend and my parents and grandma have also stayed here while visiting us. I stayed here New Years Eve and the view from our top floor room was amazing. The rooms are of a very good size--which is unusual these days, and the bathroom is also of good size. The beds are huge and extremely comfortable. This is the place to stay whether you are visiting Portsmouth or Norfolk--it is of better value than anything else. Also, there is a great military/government discount that we take advantage of!

  • Disliked — Parking--there is free street parking on the weekends--look for that!

I stayed at this hotel for a week-long conference. This hotel has wonderful conference facilities. The room was also very nice with views of the river and Navy ships etc. Staff was very courteous at the front desk as was the housekeeping staff. Now for the problem area: Three of the four days of our conference went flawlessly. On the last day of the conference we were moved to a different conference room, right next to a group with very loud music/singing and the person leading the discussion was also very loud. Our conference had many international attendees so being able to hear our discussion leaders was vital to the success of our conference. When our leaders complained to hotel management that we could not hear our own conference leaders, even through the PA system provided we were told the group next to us paid for their room too and there was nothing they could do for us. It was loud to the point of ridiculousness and our speakers often stopped talking until the noise died down. Very disappointing. In an attempt to fill all of their conference rooms, the management here has placed income above customer service. I would never recommend holding a conference here unless management would guarantee there would be no noise distractions from other conferences in adjacent rooms. If management wants to rent out rooms for loud activities, they need to be sensitive to the needs of all customers.

  • Liked — Views from the room
  • Disliked — Poor management allowing scheduling of very loud activity next to our conference

We just returned from a 1 day stay at the Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel. We were in Portsmouth to pick up our vehicle that had been shipped there. We stayed with out 13 month old son and 2 year old daughter. Our room was on the 16th floor, concierge service as well. We arrived around 2pm and were able to check in early, so that was very nice. Beautiful entry way into the hotel, room was decent, enjoyed the view and watching the boats and ferry go by. Beds were not comfortable at all. Both, my husband and I had a terrible nights sleep, couldn't get comfortable. Indoor pool was nice, very chilly. Swam around a couple times with the kids, then we soaked our toes in the hottub. Didn't want to sit in the hottub after seeing disguesting things floating around in the water. But, it was alright to warm our feet up in after freezing in the pool.

Best thing about this hotel is it's location. We enjoyed riding on the $1.00 ped. ferry across the river to Norfolk. Lots of shops, restaurants and historical sites to visit. We did eat lunch at the hotel restaurant. Good food, not too overly priced. Kids menu is great! They gave our daughter a huge fresh fruit cup that would have filled me up without eating anything else! Lady that seated us wasn't friendly, especially when we asked to sit outside. She pretty much had us seat ourselves and then forgot about us. Waitress was very nice though. We ate breakfast at the concierge room on the 16th floor. Don't expect much, it's your basic mini muffins, boxed cereal, smelly eggs, OJ, coffee, etc. All in all, we would most likely return to this hotel, although, I would dread sleeping in those beds again.

  • Liked — Location
  • Disliked — Uncomfortable beds
  • Tips/Secrets — The hotel restaurant has great food and is decently priced, excellant kids menu!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2006

I spent 5 days at this hotel in late July/early August. The hotel itself is beautiful and isn't showing an inch of age. The lobby and guest rooms are well-appointed and the view is great. I would note this is a working harbor - so be prepared for commercial ships, Coast Guard/Navy vessels, etc.

The restaurant is so-so with a very limited menu. Breakfast buffet is reasonable (11.95, kids under 6 free) but the fare is very ordinary. The bar is much better with a great selection of wines and fantastic bartenders.

The pool is in a gorgeous location, overlooking the river, but is kept fairly cold (80 F).

My biggest complaint was that I stayed here at the same time as the junior Olympics. The hotel was full of children (<18), most of whom were well-behaved. The few that weren't; however, made the experience miserable. The room next to mine had at least 6 kids in it, screaming, yelling and running in the hallways until past midnight. I called the Front Desk EVERY NIGHT to complain and they would send somebody up. The kids would cease for a few minutes and then they were back at it. I complained repeatedly and loudly that I could not sleep with the very excessive noise. Staff tried but couldn't control them. The same experience was repeated throughout the hotel - lobby, pool, common areas, etc. A few spoiled, ill behaved children with no parents in sight who behaved liked monkeys at the zoo ruined any chance at relaxing after work. I should note that I have three kids and I love children - I'm not talking about crying babies or kids having fun. At one point in the pool area the kids had a hose out spraying each other - and everybody else in the pool area as well.

The staff's inability to deal firmly with repeat offenders ruined this trip.

This hotel was quite a suprise! A pleasant suprise. Hotel is five years old, but looks and feels as though it was built this year. Clean and fresh throughout the facility. Staff from the front desk to the housekeeping staff aimed to make you feel like a welcomed guest. They were professional and courteous. The hotel has a definate "wow" factor due to its location on the Elizabeth River (rooms have a view of the water). They were clean, crisp, comfortable and quiet! The common areas are well appointed and richly decorated to give you a high-end hotel feel.

Breakfast in the hotel restuarant was well above average. Buffet with made to order eggs/omlets and an extensive buffet. ($11.95) Service prompt.

Overall great proximity to the Olde Town portion of Portsmouth and a short ferry ride ($1) to downtown Norfolk (Waterside shops/Nauticus Museum). Great location, great stay...definate recommend for singles & families.

This hotel was a great steal, cheaper than other hotels in Norfolk, and of higher quality. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, but could be a bit more knowledgeable about tourism in the area. The location was great, across the river from Norfolk, a 4 min boat ride to downtown Norfolk. It was easily accessible from the highway and it is located in a quiet area. Not much to do in Portsmouth, but cute historic area and a few good restaurants. The hotel was nicely decorated and the rooms were very comfortable.
