“Very attentive service, great harbor location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

This is a huge facility right on the port. Our spacious room had a fabulous view of the port which was teeming with activity. My husband said it had the best fitness center of any hotel we have ever stayed in, probably because so much of their business must be military/navy-related. The service at the reception was very attentive, as was housekeeping. At $120/night including parking we had not expected the level of luxury we found. It is perhaps an out of the way location unless you are in town for port-related business, but it is easily accessible to the highways.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor port view.

Dear JandSNyc,
Thank you for your compliments! I agree with your husband about the fitness center. The location of the fitness center overlooking the water and ships makes the work out a little easier. I am glad you enjoyed our hotel and stay. Thank you for staying with us and choosing Renaissance!

I checked in for a 6 day business trip, and waqs a little suprised at how long it takes to walk from the parking garage to the reception desk. (The elevators are even further). Checking in @ midnight and very tired I was not very happy with the lack of service at the front and the difficulty in managing my own luggage through the long walk after a very long trip. Upon entry to the room I was not overly impressed with the view, at midnight it does not look like much, but in the morning it is beautiful! The room is well appointed and above average, but not outstanding. They put me on the concierge level, and breakfast the next morning was VERY nice. The lady that services the Concierge suite is a DOLL!! Hard working and very helpful. The front desk took EXCELLENT care of me, and were very helpful with dinner suggestions and directions. Housekeeping was less than spectacular and needs some retraining as they forgot shampoo and amenities in the room frequently. All in all it was the Staff that won me over, I will be back, OFTEN.

Room Tip: Get a river view room, it's worth the extra $10, and if you are a Platnium member the Concierge...

Dear Ramblinwreck13,
Thank you for your review and compliments. Checking in at midnight after a long day the walk from the garage could be considered long. Your comments about the night staff and housekeeping are helpful. I have shared your comments with the management team so we can work toward better delivery of our services in those areas. You have experienced many positive assets the property has to offer. The one I am most proud of is our ambassadors! Our ambassadors (staff) are genuine and really care about the experience the guest has. On your next visit, if you have time please allow me the opportunity to introduce myself to you and welcome you to The Renaissance in Portsmouth.

I stayed at this hotel this week and found it to be wonderful. The check in process was smooth, Jeremy at the Front desk was very professional. Deborah, the Breakfast waitress was very good.
The views from the room were fabulous. At the rates you can stay here, its a steal.

I will be definitely be back and also recommend to anyone visiting that area to stay here.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the river

Dear Mac A,
Thank you for your compliments and recommendation! I have shared your comments with our staff. Jeremy and Deborah were so proud that you noticed their dedication to our guest. Our views are “fabulous” from the rooms. One of the views that are overlooked by many is the view from Foggy Point Bar & Grill. The view is almost water level. To see ships or the ferry that close is amazing. On your next visit I hope you give me the opportunity to introduce myself during your stay. Thank you for selecting Renaissance Portsmouth!

I recently attended an event here. I was shocked to see that there weren't any tablecloths on the table. . . apparently, they are a "green" hotel. It made the room look awful. They also didn't place the silverware nicely on the table- it looked like a 4 year old set the table. The service was VERY slow- I realized it was a large group, but there are other hotels/banquet halls that do it alot better. They also did not clear glasses in the area of the event, and just left them lying around

Their valet was a disaster. I think they were understaffed, but the driveway got filled very quickly, because the valet folks just let people park there while they were checking in. Also, the entry area is really shabby and not very safe-there are shady people that hang out there.

I would NOT plan a formal event here- I don't think that they can really handle a large event.

Dear Gambatt Z,
Thank you for your comments. I am the new General Manager and I would like to offer an apology from the hotel management team and staff. Your comments about your experience during your stay and event you attended will help me with other groups in the future. Our tables are polished aluminum, upscale and are made to be without linen but our clients have the option for table cloths. The place settings and service has been addressed with banquet services. You make a valid point when referring to the valet. We have to staff well to handle heavy business volumes and it appears that level was not achieved on the evening of your event. The main entry is well lit now and we do not allow people to “hang out” in this area unless if they are not staying at the hotel.
I am sorry for your experience at the hotel and as the new General Manager I will make sure that future events will be serviced well and we deliver the experience that our guest expects.

Opening the drapes and seeing the harbor in full sunlight on an early February morning is one of the more memorable awakenings from a hotel room, ever. The small craft traffic and the backdrop of huge navy ships against the water and nearby cities is beautiful. Too bad that at the end of the assessment the hotel is just an average place in a scenic location. The room was average outside of the view. Technical difficulties with the TV were present and of two incidents one was quickly resolved and the other became a work-around situation. Room was quiet and dark. Gold level breakfast area was also view-tastic and provided a nice breakfast. There is nothing wrong with the property, just does not have enough on the plus-side to generate a higher ranking. Portsmouth is very hard to access via tunnels and traffic and the pay off is not there in full.

The Staff throughout the hotel are terrific!

The restaurant, in simple terms, is exorbitantly over priced. Imagine having to pay (with reasonable tip) $17.00 for a simple breakfast consisting of just two eggs, three strips of bacon and a cup of coffee! The Weekend Buffet is very good and reasonably priced.

The price structure lunch and dinner is equally off-the charts - with mediocre food. Example : pre-frozen hamburger $10

Be prepared to pay for other "ala-carte services: Internet and $10/day parking.

Finally, weird, bizarre, music is played throughout the lobby, dining and bar areas, with excessive volume, that interferes with those wishing to engage in conversation.

We got caught in a snow storm trying to get to Newport News. The roads were very bad and we just decided to go to the nearest decent hotel my GPS could find. We were warmly greeted at the front desk and given an upgrade to the conceriege floor. It was a great room with a fabulous view of the snow falling over the Elizabeth River. Dinner in their restaurant, Foggy Point Bar and Grill was excellent and the service was attentive
