Owner description: Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is a federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast. Stretching from Marin to Cambria, the sanctuary encompasses a shoreline length of 276 miles and 4,601 square nautical miles of ocean. The sanctuary contains our nation's largest kelp forests and one of North America's largest underwater canyons. Its diverse marine ecosystem also includes rugged rocky shores, wave-swept sandy beaches, and tranquil estuaries. The sanctuary is managed to balance recreational and commercial uses with protection of natural resources, water quality, habitats, and its bountiful resident and migratory marine life. Visitors will find in the southern half a mostly undeveloped shoreline of rocky shores and steep mountainsides. The northern shoreline is similar but is dotted with settlements of small towns and moderate-size cities. Visitors to Monterey Bay National Marine Sancuary can enjoy surfing, diving, snorkeling, tidepooling, and camping. Hiking, biking and touring by car are just a few ways visitors can view this stunning coastline.

“Life everywhere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

We went out on a whale watching tour and were amazed at the abundant life obvious everywhere in the water. Lots of whales, jellyfish, porpoises, and sea lions. It gave us hope for the future.

“Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Bay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

We visited on a beatiful sunny day, not to warm, not to cool in August. All the local seals and seabirds were having fun in the water. The kelp beds were rich with activity. Couldn't be better.

“Fantastic programs and healthy tanks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

Some of the best looking aquarium tanks I've ever seen. All of the plants and sea life look extremely vibrant and healthy. Great programs for Kids and a fun and educational way to spend a day. We did the "Behind the Scenes" tour and enjoyed the experience.

“Awesome!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

This is a very special place. We saw humpback whales spouting, flukes, lunge feeding, right from the coast on a recent August visit. Seals, sea lions, otters, a variety of birds are common observations. Wildlife paradise

“Love the Harbor Seals and Otters”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

Where else can you see seals sunbathing and hear them barking and see otters playing in the water? Amazing for this Midwesterner. The walkway is lovely and well-lit at night with other tourists also out walking (we're talking 9 or 10PM... not 2AM) Go to the Monterey Tasting room and sit in the window looking over the Bay so you can spend the afternoon sipping wine and watching otters play.
