“Very Peaceful and Relaxing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2009

My wife and I just returned from our second trip to Mountain Lake. On this years vacation we went to Lake Lure, NC for the first three days and Mtn Lake for the last four. Though Lake Lure is a beautiful area, it does not compare to the serenity of this place. Last year we stayed in the Carolina cabin, this year it was the Maybrook which is next door and has a beautiful view of the entire property off the back deck. Our stay was highlighted by a guided tour from the manager "Buzz" Scanlan. He was at the the hotel during the filming of "Dirty Dancing" in 1986. Mr Scanlan spent almost two hours with our small group talking about the history of the hotel, the lake, and the filming of the movie.

The room was comfortable and clean. The breakfast buffet each morning was excellent as were the dinner selections off the weekday menu. If you like hiking and just enjoying the tranquility of the outdoors this is the place to be. Rates are very reasonable and include breakfast and dinner. Nightly showings of family movies, karaoke on Friday, and a magic show on Saturday.

In my opinion, the Mountain Lake Hotel and Sierra Nevada Mountains are the best places on earth to be to rid yourself of the pressures of everyday life.

Absolutely fantastic, from the food to the staff. We had reservations for another resort Sunday this was Friday. Mtn. Lake was recommended to us from a gentleman at the visitors center in VA on I 77. We had always heard that the movie Dirty Dancing was filmed in Lake Lure NC. He insisited that it was filmed at Mt. Lake. We called because the brochure said there would be a discount for same day reservations. We arrived and saw the lake had disappered, we became concerned. All concerns disappeared when we realized that the lake is not man made. We were greeted by the front desk women who was very kind and gave us a choice of rooms and villas. We choose a room in the back. It was very nice with firewood and paper ready to light. We were directed to make our reservations for supper which is included with your room. We were blown away by our supper and breakfast the next morning, (which you don't make reservations for as in another post) Sunday morning if you skip breakfast and upgrade for Brunch its $10.00 and less for children. Which was wonderful and met several people who drove over an hr. for it. We left after a late check out for Massanutten resort in VA. We arrived at the resort spent the night and headed right back to Mtn. Lake. You can not beat the price, the staff, the tranquility of this place. Massanutten charges extra for all activities. Mtn. Lake provides you with everything from archery to board games free for your enjoyment. Massanutten 87 degees - Mtn Lake 67 degees - home over 100. Here for 2 more days and asked for the room we had last time, wasn't available so we got an upgrade to a cabin. Incrediable value. Can't wait to bring back the whole family.

Excellent natural surroundings even with a mostly dry lake. We would love to go back in the fall as well. Will pray for lots of rain int he area as it would be awesome to have the lake back to its original beauty. Very good food and nice that dinner and breakfast are included in the nightly rate of the cottages. Stayed in the Sunset cottage. Next time will try one of the bigger cabins to have access to a full kitchen but this was perfect for our weekend escape! Great job by al the hotel, restaurant and recreation staff!

The food was extremely variable. Breakfast one morning was excellent, the next morning was absolutely terrible. The Sunday Buffet was excellent, dinner Sunday night was very bad. There appeared to be no rhyme or reason for the variability. The place seems very overpriced for the value.

We just got back from a night at the Mountain Lake Hotel... after stopping by at the end of a very long trip. Our kids just loved to run around the property after our long car trip and my husband and I felt very relaxed. What a peaceful serene place to spend a few days. The place sits on top of a mountain in a beautiful nature conservancy. The lake apparantly comes and goes as you might find with a lake on top of a mountain, but it does not detract from the relaxing beautiful natural area that it is in. The Old historic Stone hotel is beautiful, the service wonderful and the cabins while rustic are well decorated, clean and comfortable. We were upgraded upon arrival from a room in the hotel to a great clean cabin with a fireplace and living area. This alone will bring us back. The Dinner and Breakfast is included with the stay was very good. It is a bit off the beaten path (I81) but well worth the experience.
We will definately be stopping by again.

If there were a lower rating than a one, that would be the appropriate rating for Mountain Lake. We were there for Labor Day Weekend for family time with our young child, but there was absolutely nothing to do! The lake was almost completely dry, most of the hiking trails were too hard for her to hike, the basket ball "court" was just an asphalt square and we were given a basketball that wouldn't even bounce! There was NO hay ride because a group on family reunion had booked the entire weekend and there were no other spots for other lake patrons! We were promised a cookout on our first evening, it was canceled. We were promised a movie on Sunday night, they had lost the remotes for the projector and told us the movie couldn't be shown. We had booked one of their more expensive rooms, which we found to be in very poor condition, as is the rest of the grounds and facility. Something as simple as paint could greatly benefit mountain lake, but it looks as if the grounds and buildings are simply neglected. The ceiling fan, tile, window seals all had a layer of dust on them. Our carpet and bed linens looked old and extensively worn. If you don't book your breakfast prior to Sunday morning, you must pay extra for brunch (they don't tell you this when you order your package). We took a boxed lunch on Sunday and ended up with NASTY turkey sandwiches, off-brand potato chips, and very small styrofoam cups with flat soda in them. My daughters lunch was even worse, when I called the kitchen to order they told me that the only thing they could prepare for her would be a peanut butter sandwich- It was made on very stale (completely hardened) bread! I was furious! I took the sandwich to the manager who in turn did invite us to the dining room for a real meal, But, for me, the gesture was a little late. I have written to Mountain Lake and to their controlling Endowment, but have yet to gain any satisfaction from our horrible visit. I would NOT recommend the Mountain Lake Resort to anyone.

My wife and myself stayed for the first time at Mountain lake hotel.
during this thanksgiving though the lake was dry,
The staff and there genuine concern to make this your most pleasant and relaxing vacation ever.

The wonderful scenery and the lodge itself invites you to take a deep breath and relax and soak in the atmosphere. You the option of sitting back and doing nothing (relaxing) or enjoying the many activities that the have planned for you.

The dining staff will make you feel at home and when you leave you will be saying goodbye to your servers as they are now good friends. Many have been with the hotel year after year.

I look forward to my next stay at the resort and will be there also for thanksgiving day. Many guest during Thanksgiving come back year after year. i did meet one that has been coming for twenty years. This allows you to make friends and see them next year. It feels just like family.

Once again I would like to thank the staff for a wonderful stay.
