“coach parties transit camp”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2007

Whilst there may be some good rooms in this resort, most of the ones we saw were very poor particularly the ones next to the busy road -which was the last thing we expected from this location. Everything provided inthe room-from linen to toilet paper was of the lowest quality, service wasterrible-rooms not serviced by 3p.m. and only then when requested.Room was never cleaned properly even then and sheets never changed. It was the worst room we`ve had in any hotel ,motel or b&b onany of our visits to New Zealand. To add to allthis there is a constant procession of coach parties coming and going-indeed a poor quality transit camp

The hotel is in a beautiful setting, and although clean and tidy it is quite dated in appearance. It is located out of the centre and on the edge of the Waitangi Reserve. The hotel run a shuttle service which you need to prearrange unless they happen to be picking someone up in the town. It's not a huge walk but it would take a good half an hour to get to town.

Our room overlooked the sea and we were in a room at ground level which was a lovely extension to our room. The room facilities were fine, we had a safe and a fridge, and the bed was comfortable. There is a swimming pool which was rather overrun by children when we were there so that wasn't particularly relaxing or appealing.

The breakfast at the hotel was vast, although it seemed a little bit disorganised and uncivilised compared to other hotels I've been to. One of the conditions of our stay at the hotel was we were obliged to participate in the New Years Eve celebrations, which were over priced and the service was appauling. I would agree with an earlier comment that this was the worst I have experienced in NZ.

We did arrange an excursion through the hotel to 90 mile beach and Cape Reinga which was fantastic in an all terrain vehicle "Dune-Rider" (highly recommended), a cultural visit to Waitangi (recommended), we hired some bikes and cycled to Haruru Falls (I wouldn't recommend it as the road is full of crazy drivers and there are lots of ups and downs!), but bikes are a handy way to get into the town. Also to note if you are a diver that there is one dive centre in the town, but there are no dives to Poor Knights, but you can dive the Rainbow Warrior.

There is a lovely restaurant nearby called the Sugar Boat which I would recommend, the seafood is the freshest I have ever had.

The hotel is a reasonably good base to explore the region in an area where modern and top end hotels are hard to come by, but it is important to visit nearby places such as Russell and to do the excursions too. If I were to stay in Paihia again I would stay at the Copthorne.

We stayed three nights at the resort and had a wonderful time. We were booked in an ocean view room, but as there were 3 of us the only rooms with a queen and a single were river view. Still we had a nice view over the river to Piahia. The room consisted of a queen bed and a single bed with a small balcony. It was a little cramped but clean and comfortable. Internet was available in the room at a cost. it didn't have bedside lights - and I like to read in bed - so that was a negative.
The resort is right on the bay and a most beautiful place to just sit on the lovely green lawn and look. It has a series of pools which are small, I guess there are designed to cater as private pools for small groups, and one big pool. The landscaping around the pools is also spectacular. We had breakfast included in the accomodation and also a bottle of bubbly each night. Each night we had to ring reception to remind them to send it up. The third night we didn't bother.
The staff were pleasant, but most were not able to give tourist information.
The resort is close to tourboats, and shops.

Probably the most disappointing hotel we stayed in during 3 weeks in New Zealand. We had booked a Premium Waterview room, which was drab to say the least. I think they've spent money on the lobby area which appears bright and modern, but the rooms are old and tired.

Our room was at ground level, and as the hotel is actually situated in the Waitangi Reserve, there are quite a lot of people (and not just residents) walking across the lawn between the rooms and the shore. Despte this, our room only had blinds and no curtains. It was difficult to believe that you had total privacy, particularly at night.

Also, although the service wasn't terrible, it was probably the least impressive we experienced in New Zealand.

Overall, nice location but poor execution, and if it's a bit on the cool side weatherwise there isn't much to do.

We stayed for three nights in October. The weather was ideal and the hotel situation was just stunning. We had a water view room and never tired of watching activity in the bay from our small patio.

The room was all we needed and was clean and comfortable. The staff were capable, friendly and polite and several seemed to be overseas "backpackers"

The laundry at the end of the block was cheap to use and worked well..
We ate several times in the restaurant and found it good value and plentiful. The buffet breakfasts especially, although these were included in our room rate.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and I would not hesitate recommending it to anyone wishing a few days rest and rejuvenation in a beautiful tropical setting.

We stayed here for 4 nights in April 2004. Check-in was speedy, directions to our room easy to follow. Parking in front of our block was a bit of a problem, so we had to trudge a distance with our cases. Each of the entrances had steps which made it hard getting our cases up.

However - staff were wonderful, friendly, cheerful, willing to help. We kept getting a bottle of champagne incorrectly delivered to our room - we rang to tell them about it, but no-one came to collect it. My husband took it back to reception, they said keep it. It happened 2 more times, each time the response was the same! The restaurant was lovely, buffet dinners were good but you had to get in before the tour groups arrived or the food was cleared out like a plague of locusts had hit the room!

Room was lovely and comfortable, very quiet. It looked out onto the bay. Our room had what I would call a small sunroom, then a deck with chairs and a table so you could sit and look out to the bay. Housekeeping was good, with room kept nice and clean. There was a laundry at the end of our block which we could use to wash and dry our clothes

Definitely a place to return to.

We too were turned away from this hotel in spite of having confirmed reservations and having paId 5 months in advance.Thw woman who dealt with us was both rude and resolute in her determination to get us off the premise as quickly as possible. We had no alternative but to fall in with her intentions as it was late in the day and we took accomodation elsewhere but with no compensation offerred. The hotel claims that they have turned away people only once this year but your site suggests otherwise
