“Pretty, but expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2009

We needed a hotel for the night unexpectedly, so I called the first one in the free tourism book and it was the Copthorne. We ended up staying in an Oceanview room and the room was very nice and near the pool, which is stunning. The grounds are beautiful. I thought it was a bit overpriced for us, but it did include a huge buffet breakfast and had we been bigger breakfast eaters it might have been a greater value. Unfortunately the hotel is a walk to downtown Paihia. There is a shuttle but it only runs until 5 so we had to get a cab. Not a big deal but there are plenty of hotels that are closer. So, overall I liked the hotel but the guests, on the whole, were incredibly rude. It seemed to be a popular stop for an older crowd and they were a cranky bunch in general. Apparently the staff got sick of being berated by them because they immediately tended to the older guests before us, including one time when we waited at the bar for a drink (mind you at 2 p.m.) for almost 20 minutes, watching everyone else get served first. I guess having been there once before, I wouldn't go back.

This resort is in a splendid location but is in serious need of renovation and improvement. Our booked twin-bedded room comprised a double bed with a small single bed jammed in alongside. No air conditioning and a ceiling fan which only worked every so often. We asked to be transferred to a 'proper' twin-bedded room but the Duty Manager could not have cared less, saying in effect "take it or leave it". The general appearance of the building is poor with dirty frayed carpets and cracked tiles in many places. The service in the restaurant was poor at breakfast although the food was reasonable. Waitresses serving the tea and coffee had to be chased for service - sometimes as far as the kitchen. We did not eat at night in the hotel because of the poor service - there are some excellent alternatives in town, just 15 minutes walk away.
We would not wish to return to this hotel unless there has been a complete refurbishment of the building and the management approach changed.

The location of the hotel is excellent - virtually in the Treaty Grounds. 20 min walk to centre. We stayed in a Garden Room which was perfectly acceptable. There was a ceililng fan which we appreciated and a small seating area which faced the garden. The breakfast was excellent but did not have the evening meal. We would recommend 'Salts' in Pahia or an evening boat trip to Russell and eat over there, lovely sunsets.

Gorgeous location, absolutely shambolic bordering on rude service. Overpriced. Skip the restaurant and head into Paihia, I would recommend Salt for a drink and/or dinner.

Make sure you don't stay in the old wing. If you walk in and see the wooden outdated ceiling...pay for an upgrade or ask for another room. Room smelt old and musty, cups were stained and one mug had HAIR IN IT!!!! No light bulb in our side lamp and outdoor chair was broken. Felt like our room was an after-thought! Thankfully we had to check out early the next day - we were counting down the hours. It only has a ceiling fan which didn't help in the hot humid weather.

Helpful advice, when you check into a hotel - CHECK your minibars when first entering the room. We didn't have one in our room, which we thought was odd (thankfully there's a supermarket 5 mins from the hotel). Didn't think anything of it at the time, wasn't asked at check out if we had anything from their minibars...came back home from our holidays and noticed we got charged a large amount on our credit card from this hotel...rung them to query and they said it was for the whole minibar in our room!!!! Got it sorted in the end, app the guest before us requested the minibar to be removed. The minibar hadn't been put back into the room when they checked out. (Makes us wonder if anyone double-checked our room before we walked in - i doubt it)

I would recommend the service and food at their hotel bar. Waitress that served us was very friendly and helpful.

Have since received an apology letter from the General Manager.

Just returned from a months trip of the whole of New Zealand. We began our trip with 3 nights stay at the Copthorne Bay of Islands. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, although there seemed to be a lack of staff at times. Buffet breakfast was very nice. We had a sea view room with wonderful views and a small decked area outside. Room was adequate and clean.
What a shame that somebody had to go and pinch my bottles of perfume from our room !
We had enjoyed our stay up until the moment i realised they had gone.
Because of this we would not stop there again and not recommend the hotel to others.

  • Liked — Sea view
  • Disliked — The fact that somebody stole out of the room !!

We stayed in a sea-view room for 4 nights, including New Year's Eve. It was a perfect choice to 'base ourselves' for our first visit to the beautiful Bay of Islands.
Our room directly opened on to a huge lawned area that rolled down to the seafront - it was a gorgeous setting, however, we were very surprised to find there was no air-conditioning or no ceiling fan. Hard to believe it has a 4 star rating! Upon request, we were delivered a pedestel fan for additional comfort. Also, we requested some insect spray as there were no screens on the door or louvred windows....blow-flies and the occasional huge bees found their way inside easily. The lady (duty-manager) at the time almost scoffed at us for requesting insect spray, but it was supplied promptly.
The restaurant provided a special buffet dinner for New Year's Eve which was really nice with lots of local seafood. Waiting staff were very attentive & helpful. We watched the fireworks explode over the bay from the comfort of our balcony and listened to the music from the restaurant.
On our 3rd morning, the 'egg lady chef' at breakfast simply 'disappeared' leaving eggs frying in the pan. It could have had serious consequenses if supervisory staff had not noticed and removed the pan before it lit up. Needless, to say, we had an alternative choice to eggs (there was plenty of variety) and noticed her absence on our final morning as well.
Overall, it was lovely with those few minor problems mentioned. I would definitely advise ensuring some type of air-conditioning or fans be requested before booking. As a 4 star resort, we just assumed that would be fundamental.
