Stayed for one night only pre an early morning flight. The following night I stayed at the Intercontinental in Adelaide for one night, then the Intercontinental in Melbourne for 2 nights. Whilst this hotel was the ‘plainest’ of the three it still had all the amenities of the other two with equally efficient staff. The location is very good if with respect to Tullamarine Airport (but you wouldn't stay here for as your 'city' holiday location).
Company paid $175 and it included buffet (or in room breakfast), shuttle to airport (about 400m at most I’d estimate) and free 24 hr internet (only 200mb download; otherwise it is $9 for 2hrs or $19 for 24 hrs).
Upgraded to King bed room for free due to availability which was appreciated. The front reception staff and the wait staff in the restaurant were very friendly and helpful whilst remaining professional.
Room is very plain in decoration but is a good size. It appears to be an old hotel which has been renovated at some point. Room was lovely and quiet to sleep in and I did not hear even one plane.
Equipped with a decent sized desk with phone and lamp. It has a data port and power point at top of desk etc.
Flat screen TV with free to air channels & also in-house movies channel (pay for these), alarm clock, Air Con (very quiet and efficient), an in room safe, iron & ironing board, fridge, kettle, and mini bar stuff (tea/coffee/sugar/milk was free though. Has a wardrobe and plenty of space for bags, clothes, etc. There is an armchair, side tables and a choice of soft and firm pillows, etc.
The bathroom is smallish but functional; has a good sized mirror, toiletries, hairdryer and a shower that is inside a bathtub (and the loo). It has a ‘clothes line’ that pulls out from one side above the bath tub to the other. Note: the Intercontinental Melbourne bathroom was no bigger really (it was more modern with a rain shower rather than a bathtub with shower overhead but no roomier overall).
Window in my room (#624) looked over the IBIS budget hotel and some paddocks. The natural light is fantastic in the room during the day.
Parking is a very reasonable $10 for 24 hrs in a private parking area – semi fenced and gated (so people could walk into where cars are but you need the ticket to get the card out through the boom gate).
I ate dinner at the restaurant and all my food was nice and well presented. There is a small pool just outside the restaurant (not in direct view of diners) but I didn’t use it. They also provide in room dining 24/7. My breakfast was room service and was warm and my drink was hot so all good.
Shuttle to airport was efficient and timely.
In terms of cleanliness everything appeared dusted and fingerprint free other than the carpet had definitely not been vacuumed ‘spotlessly’ (it wasn’t dirty, just wasn’t pristine).
The hotel is listed as a 4 star hotel so I would expect the corridors and lobby to be a little more 'spruced up' than they perhaps are. The room definitely looks a little 'tired' (clean but very plain and a bit old looking) and did not look 4 star however it did have all the 4 star amenities.
I am going to scrape the rating into 4/5 based on everything other than the 'tiredness' or 'plainness' of the room as the rest was definitely 4 star (staff, sound proofing in room, location to airport, etc). I only gave the value as 3/5 as it is still expensive for one night in a hotel against others of similar standard. Having said that, I'd stay again due to the other factors listed.
