“Thomas Cottage”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

All this space for two people inside and out was an extravagance but not to be missed. The decor was amaxzing and I felt truely at home and comfortable. Try as I did couldn't imagine a ghost in this idelic place. Being the only two people in this station overnight was fantastic and I wish it could have been longer. Will return with a group of friend though and play some of the games on a stormy night hopefully.

Dear Cathy C,

A lighthouse must be one of the few holiday locations where stormy weather is considered a bonus! It’s great to hear that you felt so comfortable in Thomas Cottage and we look forward to welcoming you and your friends back to Cape Willoughby. Thank you for your positive review!

This was the first lighthouse accommodation of three on our visit to Kangaroo Island. The cottages maintain their period character and all have a similar layout. They are all well equipped for self-catering (but no TV). We stayed in Seymour cottage and it was particularly light and spacious. Telstra Next-G phone coverage and wireless internet is available if you have your own USB or phone modem. The resident ranger is a very friendly fellow and also looks after visits to the lighthouse and runs the surprisingly well equipped shop which seems to stock every lighthouse souvenir imaginable. The walk down to the site of the former cottages and jetty is well worth doing and there are great views across Backstairs Passage to the Fleurieu Peninsula from the house. It's amusing to note a bit of friendly rivalry between the resident managers on the Island which we're sure keeps up a high standard for visitors!
A lot of money was saved by booking a self-drive tour directly with Sealink (ferry + own car + accommodation).

I've always wanted sto stay in a lightkeepers cottage, and this one exceeded all my expectations. The house was cute and rustic, with every necessary convenience provided, and the views and location were unbelievable.
The tour guides next door were also immensely helpful with not only specific information about the lighthouse tour, but also provided us with information about a few of the walks in the area. We had an aunbelievably fantastic time here.

Room Tip: Only two houses to choose from, I'm sure they're equally as good as each other

As with Cape du Coedic we had stayed here 15 years ago, it was just as fabulous as we remembered, made even more special by spending Christmas here. The best Christmas dinner table view, ever, and a very good place to go for a walk after the Christmas lunch. The surrounding coastline is spectacular, the lighthouse tour was amusing and very interesting, staff were friendly and very helpful, possums a bit too friendly. Antechamber bay nearby is a gorgeous place to swim , kayak and snorkel. It is a good idea to take provisions for the duration of your stay then there is no reason to leave the peace and isolation of this beautiful place. Also lovely to be free of TV, internet and phone!!

We stayed 3 nights in Thomas Cottage (the middle one). It was such a fantastic experience.

The Ranger (Cameron) was a fantastic host. The rooms were very clean and the place is huge. Love the idea of having no T.V meant we played board games of a night as well as drinking and eating on the verandah.

Our final night contained a massive lightning show. I have NEVER experienced a storm like it. Cameron kept us calm by telling us we were in the safest place on the island and if it came to it we could all end up sleeping in the lighthouse - it didn't come to that thankfully.

This is definitely a great place to stay, but make sure you are prepared! Take your own food as the shops are about 30 mins away.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a good camera :)

If you want solitude and great scenery, this is it.The renovation of the cottages are very nicely done, not too modern, still a feel of yesteryear.Ample conveniences altough a radio when the test cricket was on would have been handy. The lighthouse tour was excellent, the walking tracks to historical sights were interesting, the fishing off the rocks(be careful) was good.A bang at 4:50 am had me thinking of the supposed resident ghost, alas nothing was sighted. All in all a very good experience. The ranger was very helpful with information.Make you go prepared with provisions,it is a long way to the shop, the kangaroos are friendly but don't encourage them,I can't vouch for the tiger snakes,we only saw them crossing the road on the way out.By the way the weather was great,it isn't always so,can get very windy.

We had 3 nights at the two lighthouse keepers cottages in November. It was a wonderful experiece [altho we had no power for the first two nights due to a lightening storm], it was truely a step back into the past. The staff could not do enough for us so we would be very comfortable.
We went as a venture to find out more about our grandfather who was a head lighthouse keeper there around 1939 to 1945 and our father, who was a young boy then. Adele and Cameron [the rangers] were fantastic in finding lots of information for us including pictures and log books. Also the tour of the lighthouse was very interesting and informative, well worth doing.
