“Value for money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

Nice friendly motel. Very clean. Decor a little dated. Bed comfortable. Stayed in standard room and was a good size. Had view of pool area. Travelled with another couple for a family event. One of our group was in a wheelchair and unfortunately no wheelchair amenities or rooms. However they made a room available which was best to accommodate. Dined in restaurant one evening and food was very good.

The Mercure at American River is a perfect place to start an extended exploration of Kangaroo Island, We stayed two nights and were very satisfied. The rooms, overlooking the bay, were quite well appointed and comfortable. Service was helpful and pleasant. The food was a very good standard at a reasonable price and the cooked breakfast was excellent. It's not all that easy to find good, reasonably priced hotel accommodation on KI so I would recommend this hotel.

Very friendly and helpful staff and good quality evening meals - menu did not change over our stay of twelve nights, but special meals were provided . Continental breakfast was rather restrictive.
As we were staying in winter we did not use the outdoor facilities, including very nice swimming pool and tennis court.

Hotel was fine but location is a long way from anything. Restaurants are generally about 40 kms away in bigger towns. The best parts of the island are a long way to go.
Hotel is poorly equipped to provide information on local attractions, walking tracks etc.

A very friendly place with excellent and helpful staff. Rooms and facilities very clean. Nothing was too much trouble. The bathroom was a bit small and in our room the water pressure low - maybe as a result of being away from the mainland facilities. The hotels location was fine but it was a longish drive to some of the islands tourist spots. But we would go back - maybe in summer.

Really quaint place to stay, rooms are dated but clean. Beautiful views. A little remote location. Restaurant was lovely, a little expensive but fine dining, couldnt use the pool as it was a little chilli but it looked inviting. Will stay here again

Kangaroo Island, one of Australia's great wilderness destinations, is best known for its magnificent coastal views, unique landscapes, uncrowded beaches and fascinating wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, Australian sea-lions, New Zealand fur seals and Little penguins. Kangaroo Island is a place of natural beauty and a place to escape. The Kangaroo Island Lodge is situated on the banks of Eastern Cove in American River, with all rooms perfectly perched offering exceptional water views over the bay. Amid lush coastal vegetation, the Kangaroo Island Lodge blends in with its natural surroundings. There is no better place to unwind and to enjoy the peace and tranquility. The seclusion of this area allows for the abundance of wildlife to roam free. Tammar wallabies, brush tailed possums, black swans, Cape Barren geese, Australian pelicans and the rare and endangered glossy black cockatoos can all be found in here. The outer bay of Eastern Cove offers excellent sailing and fishing in protected waters. The Kangaroo Island oyster industry is also located in American River, with the Oyster Shed located just down the road from the Kangaroo Island Lodge. If you are a keen walker, there are two main walking tracks, the Independence Trail and the Fish Cannery walk. Both walks meander through the natural coastal scrub where numerous species of wildlife and birdlife can be seen. So why not come and escape to the Kangaroo Island Lodge? ... more   less
