“Quirky italian place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2012

Sinatra music, great waiters, and the kids loved the pizza (hard to get them to admit something is good)! We almost went to the larger, more expensive Ameilia's down the street, but glad we changed our mind. It's a pretty small place so maybe not for larger groups.

“Not bad, but not great.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2012

If you are on Balboa Island and looking for some Italian food, this will work. If you are looking for great Italian food while on the Island, you just might be a bit disappointed. The prices are a bit steep for the quality and service. There is little on the menu to get excited about and the pasta tends to be a bit overcooked. The servers tend to resemble college kids just looking to make a few dollars on the side, but not particularly interested in your lasting impressions of the restaurant. It will do in a pinch, but I would not recommend you go out of your way to find Ciao.

“Very nice local Italian on Balboa Island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2012

Nice place to stop for lunch or dinner and then take a walk around the island. Nice wood-oven style pizza, great pasta, and reasonably priced wines. Tight space, seems best suited for parties of 4 or less.

“Ciao Is Good on Balboa Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2012

A great little local Italian restaurant on the main drag of Balboa Island, which is one of the most unique places in the US! The food and service was great. In addition to tables, they have a small wine bar setting where the full menu is also accessible. After our walk around the Island looking at the spectacular Christmas decorations, the meal was fantastic.

“Great service, hip atmosphere, satisfying food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2011 via mobile

I was ready to pass by this place based on other reviews, but saw so many filled tables of happy people that we had to try Ciao for ourselves. The wait staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive. The food was quickly delivered following a plate of fresh rosemary bread and lemon caper (?) butter. Scampi was a good size, salad was very fresh and small pizza was adequate for one person, or for two kids. Decent wines and tiramisu; not much else left for wanting.
