“Who cares about paper plates! The location and food are great!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013 via mobile

I had an afternoon off from meetings, and was directed to Balboa Island and Rubys. What a great suggestion it was! Rubys is located at the end of the pier, with an amazing view of the beach, surfers, dolphins, and a sea lion. The wind was pretty brisk on the day I went, but the sun was warm. I had the Mediterranean Burger, fries, and a Cherry Coke (even though I seldom drink sodas, it just seemed the right thing to do). This is one of those "have to visit" places if you are in the area.

“Fantastic - despite the challenges”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

Rubys diner is located at the end of the pier on the Newport Beach penninsula. Due to its location the water supply is limited and therefore there are no bathrooms for customers to use (but there are some at the start of the pier) and all the crockery is disposable so water is not wasted with washing up. The food and service is excellent along with a large and varied menu. There are two floors to the restaurant with the upper level being outside. The are clear panels so you can admire the view without being blown away and gas heaters if it gets chilly. You can watch the fisherman leaning over the edge of the pier landing their catch (some with more success than others). While sitting here we were lucky enough to see loads of pelicans and also a school of dolphins which were quite close to the beach but happily swimming around. The view over the ocean is fantastic and you can also see the tourists on the beach. This restaurant is well worth a visit, just dont expect the ritz (they do very well with what they have available).

“A trip back in time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

What a diner! At the end of the pier on the Balboa Penninsula, sits a diner with tasty food. With 2 floors, the top floor outdoors you feel like you are floating on the sea! Excellent service, excellent burgers (even gluten free buns if required) and a spectacular setting! A definite place to return to.

“Nice view, no bathrooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

This is a cool little breakfast place with umbrellas and sunshine on the roof, but there are no bathrooms and if you get a shake, its smaller than the shakes at an off the pier location. Also, its filled with fisherman, so plan on fishy smells and awardness on your walk. There is also a walk up window if you just want a coffee.

“Plastic plates, really?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

The view is great and its fun to eat at the end of the pier, but the food was served on plastic plates. I get that they don't have sanitary pumping out there (use the fine bathrooms at the entrance to the pier), but what about a cardboard box like In 'N Out uses? It just seemed wasteful. That said, the food was fine, just what you would expect from Ruby's. I liked that they put the calories on the menu. I don't usually eat at a diner because I have to watch those calories, but I was able to have a good, sensible lunch.
