We had originally gone to El Eden, where we were informed that we couldn't be seated without a reservation. Capt. Dan had recommended Zaco's Tacos, so we went there next. It's got a cool, funky atmosphere, and there was a table available right there, so we snapped it up. I went to the bar to check out the menu, where I appreciated right away that the bartender was very nice. We decided to try one each of six different tacos (they had eight or so, I think), as well as some chips and salsa. I ordered a beer and a hibiscus margarita for myself, which came out very quickly even though they were pretty busy. Capt. Dan actually walked through the door not long after we arrived, with his friend. He's such a cool guy-- you should definitely go sailing with him if you're planning a visit to Culebra.
Again, we were prepared to wait on island time for our food, but we got the chips and salsa very quickly. The chips were hot and salty and really hit the spot after a long day of snorkeling and swimming. The salsa was also delicious-- spicy and clearly homemade. The place really got slammed quickly (we had arrived early for once, at about six o'clock). The bar takes both food and drink orders, but again, patience and politeness go a long way. We were prepared for waiting on Culebra, especially after we quickly learned that half the places we had read about on TripAdvisor were closed. I'm always very friendly to service people, and we were pleased to receive our drinks very promptly in response.
I overheard that they had to stop taking food orders, as they already had a huge line and waiting list. We were grateful to receive our tacos not long after this. Every single one was different, with carefully prepared meat, toppings, and sauces. Unfortunately, we were starving, tipsy, and the tacos were way too good to stop and take a picture. The fried fish, carne asade, seared tuna, and carnitas taco were especially good, but we ate every single bit.
The place was jam-packed around the bar at this point, and I patiently hung around until the poor guy had a chance to take orders. When he got to me, I requested a round of bushwackers whenever he possibly got the chance. He frankly said it may be a little while, but I said that was totally fine. Minutes later, 2 perfect Culebra bushwackers arrived, which were fabulous.
Once we finished, I waited to pay and thanked him profusely and let him know that everything was delicous. He thanked us for our patience, while I assured him we had loved it. Will definitely hit Zaco's Tacos up every time I come back to this island. Wish I had gotten a t-shirt!
