True home cooking - straight out of Barbara Rosa's kitchen. The fish and ships are wonderful. The pasta also god good reviews from friends we were with. Really liked the shark bites!

“Visit marred by annoying patrons”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

If' you're on Culebra more than three nights, you have to eat here. It's the closest thing I've experienced to Mother Hull's in Atlanta in the 1970s. (That's high praise; Ma Hull served straight-up Southern home cooking at her boarding house, which she opened to non-boarders to help pay off some medical bills. $2.50 for weekday lunch, $3.00 on Sunday. All you can eat: fried chicken, okra, biscuits, banana pudding with nilla wafers, and much else was on the groaning, common table. Jimmy Carter ate there, as did a musician named Jagger. Not together. But I digress.)

Others have described the setup: go into her house and order at the pass-through to the kitchen. She'll call you when your food is ready. Meanwhile, stake out a table on the large porch. We had to wait more than a half-hour for our food, which was not unreasonable. I didn't plan in advance and had no idea where to get beer on a Sunday night; she directed me to Happy Landings, a local pub at the end of the airport runway. Just going there for take-out Medalla was one of the more interesting experiences I had on Culebra. The seafood stroganoff I ordered ($15.95) was interesting if not quite excellent, but it certainly was very good. On the main island I would call it a bit overpriced, but Culebra restaurants seem to be a bit pricier than one might expect. Still, this is a mostly self-service establishment. That's said, I will happily return next time I'm on Culebra.

Unfortunately, what should have been a very nice evening was ruined by the loud, rude, and annoying patrons at the three other occupied tables. This was on February 2. They had a spirited (i.e., alcohol-fueled) conversation, shouted from table to table. Our table was in the middle of this three-way "conversation," making it impossible to enjoy our food. This is not to discourage you from eating at Barbara Rosa's. But it is intended to remind you that other patrons at this or any other restaurant deserve to enjoy their meal. If you want to have loud, annoying conversations, there are plenty of bars that are suitable venues. This restaurant is not among them.

(I did not take into consideration these inconsiderate customers in my rating.)

“Mama's cookin': great food, very fair price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2014

Be patient, it's worth the wait. Barbara only cooks her favorites and they're darn good. She's the only employee, so buy some beers/wine up the road a piece and sit back. she has a great sense of humor, so if it's not too busy, enjoy her company, she's got an infectious laugh. Try the shark bites!

“So Culebra”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2014

Barbara Rosa embodies what Culebra is all about: you are literally dining on Barbara's front porch while she cooks for you in her kitchen, the TV is playing CNN in her living room and her cat naps on the couch. And did I mention the food is simple and delicious? Bring bug spray and also BYOB. Only open for dinner.

“Great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2014

Dinner is always great at this resturant. It's only open certain days but when it is it's a great place to eat. Bring your wine if you want. Almost everywhere on Culebra it takes awhile to get your food, but if you're having a few glasses of wine or sharing memories the time goes by, just don't go super hungry.
