My wife and I and another couple went to the El Senador from October 3 through 10, 2004. To give you some perspective, we are late 20s, early 30 somethings, professionals without children. We are a pretty happy-go-lucky bunch, that tips well and brings presents when we, as westerners, travel to developing countries. We travel every autumn together, and while we have had some great vacations to other destinations in the past (though never to Cuba), the El Senador wins the prize for the worst...by far the worst. If this is a 4+ star resort, then I would hate to see anything lower.
Allow me to start with the positives of our vacation. The weather was fantastic. The beach was terrific and the soft white sand felt so good on the feet. The rooms are a good size. The cigar lounge is a treat. The bartenders know what they are doing and the alcohol selection was more vast than one might expect at an all-inclusive. (As an aside, El Senador has the #1 Flair Bartender - think the movie Cocktail - in Cuba who is #4 in the world and is very entertaining to watch.) Fresh, safe drinking water is abundant. The showers in the room are also quite good - great water pressure.
Unfortunately, these positives are grossly overshadowed by the negatives. Some of these are things you have undoubtedly read in other reviews on this site. I dismissed them and booked with El Senador anyway. That was a mistake.
First of all, the food is horrendous. It is not even average to the point where you can get by. It is terrible. In what way? The meat was often extremely dry and tough. Gravies were applied to just about everything, and it was very sweet and starchy. Trying to find healthy alternatives was very difficult. Sure everyone let's go a little bit on vacation, but there were few if any healthy alternatives at meals. Because it was low season we could go to a la cartes every night if we so desired. We were bored by the menu within three days. For the gala dinner we were promised lobster and shrimp. There was no lobster. The shrimp was grossly undercooked (and be prepared for your shrimp to still have eyeballs and tenticles intact). In summary, we had low expectations for the food before we went, and even our lowest expectations were not met.
Cleanliness is an issue at the resort. What you have read about the birds at the La Sirena dining area are true. We watched birds nibble away at the buffet, descend upon people's food when they arose for a moment, and poop on unoccupied chairs. Another area where cleanliness was an issue was the public bathrooms throughout the resort (in the lobby, by the stage, etc.). Never was there any toilet paper at these restrooms until the day we departed, and the state of refuse on the floor left something to be desired. While the cleanliness of our room was generally good, we never did get used to the feeling of sand on our bed. Speaking of sand, the beach area in front of El Senador is great, but stroll 15 minutes down past Tryp and be prepared to see tons and tons of garbage on the beach (plastic containers, pop cans, construction debris, etc.) Lastly about cleanliness, the common areas of the lobby need to be cleaned more frequently.
If you are flying Air Transat World of Vacations, be prepared to take charge of your own vacation. Our representatives made several errors in the course of our vacation. From the point of landing, it was unclear which line-up to get into to get our resort package. At the orientation session at our resort the following day there was some misinformation including when certain facilities at the resort would be open, the contents of the gala dinner, and some of the finer details of the excursions. As for the latter, our representatives were good at providing excuses, apologies and refunds when excursions did not work, but were not particularly good at fixing the root of the problem.
A couple of notes about the excursions. We booked the glass bottom boat and snorkeling package on the coral reef, the sunset horse back riding tour and a massage for my wife. The other couple we travelled with also booked scuba. The only treat that was successfully achieved was the massage which happened on the resort and was booked independently from the World of Vacations rep. I am willing to accept that rough seas may have had a part to play for some excursions not happening on some days, but I will not accept the lack of communication. We awoke early for three days in a row for excursions, but had to wait hours before we could even track someone down to let us know they were officially cancelled. When we got our refund for our glass bottom boat tour, the rep said, "Oh, I had heard the boat was broken." She never let us know that days before. As for the horse back riding, we waited an hour for them to arrive with the horses and they never came. We were later told they went to the wrong resort.
And so, we found ourselves on the resort for the whole vacation. Cayo Coco is an island. There isn't anything close by, really. Were you expecting to go to Havana? It is 6 hours away. The animation team was okay, but nothing to get excited about. They spent most of their time catering to a group of young women who travelled down to the resort to drink and party. The night time entertainment was okay two nights but awful other nights. If you are into watching complete strangers getting absolutely humiliated, check out the Miss Senador contest. I am no prude, but I felt uncomfortable watching a clearly awkward young lady push a ping pong ball and golf ball up each pant leg of a strange man and cross the balls over at his crotch. Most nights entertainment was over by 10:30 at which time most people formed a small gathering in the lobby - the only bar still open - and chatted or played cards.
Let me conclude with a bunch of other piddly complaints, although these are nowhere near as important, really, as what I have outlined above: there was no diet pop; bring your own Sweet'n'Low or other sugar substitute if you need it; the staff are very inconsistent (some are terrific with great service and genuinely funny, others not so much); the lagoon smells like sewage if the wind isn't blowing strong enough to waft the smell away; the beds are lumpy and pillows scrunchy; be prepared for mosquitos in the air and small critters walking around the sink and toilet of your room; the wait on the last day is excrutiating; a lot of parents just let their kids run wild, and there were more kids than I would have expected in October when they should be in school; we were told by the World of Vacations rep that cigars and liquor are the same price at the cigar lounge and resort gift shops as they are at the airport, so just buy at the resort - not true, as cigars and liquor were a lot cheaper at the airport.
I can check Cuba off my list of places I wanted to visit. I won't be back anytime soon.
