TRAVELLER'S BEWARE.....After researching extensively the various resorts in Cayo Coco, my Wife and I , with 2 children aged 13 & 16 booked a week at the El Senador from July 4 - 11th. My travel agent assured us that even though it was " off season", and half the resort would be closed, they would still offer full service. Please do not be fooled. We didn't last 24 hours in this resort . I have travelled extensively throughout the Caribbean, and this resort is by far the worst I have ever been to. I can't imagine what has happened here, since a number of friends stayed there this past winter...and loved it! I hear rumours it has been sold, or is it just the way they deal with the "off season".
We arrived Sunday around 5:30 pm, and as soon as we walked out on to the grounds, we knew we had made a Big mistake. There wasn't one single blade of grass left in this resort. It was all dead, with every tree and shrub starving for water and attention. Obviously this place was not taken care of. Shocked at the disappointing appearance of the resort, we checked into rooms that stunk so bad, and were full of Ants. We fired up the A/C and hopped it would improve by bedtime. Off to dinner...only to discover the Steakhouse and Seafood restaurants were closed, and also the cigar lounge I had looked so forward to.
We ate at La Sirena grill, the Italian al carte. The birds even vacated long enough for us to get a table. But the anti-pasto bar was a disgrace. No attempt was made to keep anything cold. It simply sat out on a table getting warmer by the hour. Little did we know that no attempt would be made at breakfast to keep food cold either, except for the food that was supposed to be HOT!, it was stone cold.
I think every drink we ordered that first night had at least 2-3 bugs in it, my daughter had the record with 8.
I promised the kids then...and my wife...who was reluctant to even stay the night, we would get out of there and move to a different resort the next day.
Forget the ice cold Pina Coladas or Daquaris they do up in the blender, they just serve a pre-made drink. And believe it or not, had run out of beer at the swim-up bar by 1:00 pm that first day.
Thank god for Nicole, our World of Vacations Rep. She was AMAZING. She had 2 options for us by 2:30 in the afternoon, but was not able to get the El Senador to wave a $354.00 CDN penalty for checking out early...to a resort that sells for less, and is rated a 4 star, not the 4 1/2 that the El Senador is, (what a joke).
The Tryp Club was a huge improvement, with numerous food stations in the buffet, where food was protected by glass, hot food hot, and cold food kept on ice, or a freezer plate. I feel for the people who stayed the rest of the week. Oh how sick they must have been. Of course they will be told it was too much sun, or too much to drink.
We even learned later that the 250 guests that stayed at El Senador were all Canadians . It is not even being offered to Europeans at present. They certainly wouldn't put up with this. The Tryp Club we ended up at had approx. 900 people, many from England, Scotland, Italy and Canada. We managed to salvage the vacation, but even there, it just doesn't stack up to the many resorts I have stayed in in Mexico. The beach was great, the water warm and crystal clear, and the weather perfect, but no more Cuba for me!
