“First time to Cuba - First time to Sol”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2012

This was our first trip to Cuba and we had a fabulous time from the moment we hit the tarmac at the airport. When we got to the Sol check in went smooth, got our room and hit the buffet for lunch. Our room was ocean view and it did not disappoint. Maria our housekeeper kept our room spotless our entire stay. Duanne and Orlando were our bartenders extraordinaire. Then there was Maikel on breakfast omelets, whom we made sure to see every morning. The entire staff of the Sol were so helpful and accommodating, nothing was to great to help a guest.

Those who complain about the hotel and food, WHICH hotel were you at? Yes the rooms are spartan and not perfect, but clean. I did not go to Cuba to sit in my room. It was a place to shower and sleep. Yes the food is typical to Cuba. What did you expect? Is this not why we travel to other countries to see how other people live. We thought the food was wonderful and very plentiful. Very similar to how we eat at home. We are not prepackaged eaters.

My husband & I both work in the tourist industry, 6 days a week for 5 months every summer. The staff at the Sol work 6 days a week year round. I could not do it. My hats off to all the staff at the Sol. We saw first hand some of the ignorant tourists you had to put up with. I would love to have smacked them but your staff handles them with a smile and diplomacy. We both found ourselves quite often wondering why some of these people even came on holidays. If everything is better at home then STAY there!

On our third day we took the Espectacular tour. This is a must for everyone. We left the resort island and saw the REAL Cuba. It was an eye opener for us both. Our tour guide Senor Falcon with Cubancan was amazing. The standard of living is considerably lower than Canada. These people have very little but what they do have they respect and maintain. I have some wonderful memories of the people of Cuba.
We also took the Jeep Safari tour with EcoTour. My hat is off to our wonderful, marvelous tour guides Lino and Robert. We saw amazing sites, amazing people and you helped us see the Real Cuba and fall in love with her.

We made sure we had 10-15 peso for tip money in our pockets for each day. As we work in the industry we believe in tipping. Just because it is all inclusive does not mean tips are included. We appreciate good service and believe that you acknowledge it.

We are getting ready to book our next trip to Sol for next Christmas and hope to take our families and extended families with us.

Maybe if more children saw how the children of Cuba lived they may have a better appreciation for the life they have in Canada.

Thank you to all the staff at Sol Cayo Coco for a marvelous, wonderful and unforgettable first trip to Cuba!

Room Tip: if you are going during the rainy season get a second floor room.

It really depends on what you are expecting from a holiday in Cuba. We stayed from 15th December to 28th and could not have wished for a better Xmas. Weather was superb, staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome and most of all get to know you as people. We took our 9 year old daughter who abolsolutly loved the pool, the staff and everything about the experience.

I would love for the management to share how appreciatiative we are of the fantastic staff that work in this hotel, each and everyone of them whatever their role want to make your holiday special and really long hours and very hard. Special thanks to the following staff:-
Elvis, Saul the waiters and Mickel who cooked my daughter panacakes each morning and arranged them in a bear shape.
Delvis & Emilio were superb from the animation / entertainment team. So much so, that there were many tears on our last day from us and the team and they really do make your holiday. Delvis in particular is a genuinely lovely man who goes out his way to ensure everyone has a good time and totally looks after child staying at the hotel. Thank you Delivis.
The lobby bar and the beach bar are superb and the bar staff go out of their way to serve you quickly and actually know what you are going to ask for.

We had a great holiday and we would definetly return to Cuba and this hotel. Going away at Xmas was a new experience and the Sol Cayo Coco ensured that the children had a visit from Santa, presents, a show and that Xmas was bought to Cuba, bearing in mind that Cuban's do not celebrate Xmas too!! On Xmas Eve, the restaurant hosted a party and ensured there was Turkey and all the trimmings and lots of variety to suit all such as Sushi, Mexican etc. To our delight they had even put a desert selection which included fruit and nut chocolate and every sweet treat you can imagine. It was quite breath taking and so welcomed by all.

If you want to have a great holiday, be treated with respect and be overwhelmed by the Cuban generosity and heartfelt desire to make you feel special then go to Cuba and in particular Sol Cayo Coco.

Hector the Thomas Cook Rep was brilliant and explained all about the trips and was on hand almost every day to answer any questions you had. He even rearranged our speedboat trip as we were feeling a little out of sorts the day before (usual tummy troubles you get when you go on holiday). Highly recommend the Speed Boat trip and what made the holiday most memorable was the Dolphin Trip. It is an overnight stay and you do get to visit Trinidad, which can be a liitle tiring when you have already had a long trip, but it is the MOST amazing experience and one in which we will never forget.

My thanks to all at the hotel and could the managment team please share with all your staff who are exeptional. Lewis and all the staff who work in the reception bar are outstanding, each morning I went down for a coffee and they had started to make it as they saw me walk across the reception. The Entertainment team are ALL amazing, especially Delivs and Emilio - "You guys are amazing and we will never forget you. You have made mine (Angie), Westy and little Rhianna's Christmas the most special time" THANK YOU

This hotel is never a four star as stated by Thomas Cook!!! We stayed in another four star Thomas Cook hotel last year in Cuba which knocked socks off this one. This is more like a 1 possible 2 star. YES the gardens are beautiful But rest of grounds very dirty - overflowing smelly bins rubbish and ciggarette stubs around the pool - We never once witnessed bins being emptied or someone sweeping around the pool area within our 2 weeks there. POOL TOWELS - It took us NINE DAYS to get a clean towel then it was given/thrown with a sneer! Staff really obnoxious @ towel hut.
ROOMS - very tired - we had room 1421 and had to strip the bedding off ourselves so it would get changed after 5 days, although we did get clean towels everyday and a bottle of water - nothing more was done in/to the room . The maid did leave us a note saying she was going on leave about 5 days into our holiday - so we could give her a tip now!
ENTERTAINMENT - PASS!!
LOBBY BAR - ORLANDO and his team were fantastic. The only problemS here were the SMALL PLASTIC THROW AWAY CUPS YOU WERE SERVED YOUR DRINKS IN WHETHER YOU WERE ADULT OR CHILD. The lack of seating space was a pain as well.
A-LA-CARTE - Disgusting - raw food - Dark you can barely see whats in front of you! Whilst we were there all tables (except 1 ) walked out leaving their food!
BUFFET RESTAURANT - Yes the food does become repetitive - but everyday you have a choice of either FISH - CHICKEN - PORK - BEEF - PIZZA - PASTA - ALL FRESHLEY COOKED IN FRONT OF YOU. The other food was not always hot/warm unless you happened to be lucky in being there when fresh stuff was brought out! YULKA and SAOL were fantastic and very thoughtful and always made sure people were ok and wanted for nothing. YES the buffet could do with a lick of paint and new tables without nails/screws sticking out of them and tablecloths would be nice.
Yes the manager did walk around saying ' Hello from the management ', but quickly walked on! HECTOR is good and will try his best to sort out any problems.

THIS IS NO WAY A FOUR STAR UNLESS THOMAS COOK HAVE LOWERED THEIR STANDARDS

I stayed at the Sol with my partner & my 3 year old.
The setting was Amazing beautiful grounds, beaches & turquoise Ocean. We found all the Staff very friendly warm & inviting. Yes the food gets a bit tiresome after 2 weeks. But its only 2weeks.

We took the bus to Playa Pillar Beach- Defiantly worth 5cuc return.

Rooms were clean & spacious. Plenty of clean towels, Linen.

Ory at the Kids club Was Amazing with our little Girl(Bring any toys, games etc you don't need & donate them)

We loved our Peaceful Laid back Holiday

My wife and I have visited Cuba 8 times which 7 of which have been to the Sol Cayo Coco Guillermo. We have come into contact and met numerous managers over the years at the SCG, but the staff have changed little, this is one reason why we have always gone back to the SCG as we have always been made to feel welcome.

Like every good ship it should have a good Captain and it appears that Manuel the General Manager fits this bill. We found him easy to talk too and vice versa, whenever we passed or sat in the main bar having our morning coffees. If we had any concerns regarding our stay he was more than happy to discuss or take on board any issues we had. Like all good ships it needs an anchor and that anchor which lies within the SCG is without doubt their staff. They are always attentive, hardworking, polite, and can’t do enough for you. It would be unfair to individualise anyone in particular, but a big thank you goes to the, Customer Reception Personnel, and all the hotel staff who have made our stay, yet again, most wonderful. We do appreciate it from the heart. Each stay at this hotel has been one immense pleasure and enjoyment with little or no disruption.

However, there were a number of minor criticisms one of which was when the SCG was full to its maximum capacity. You can at times have to queue at the main restaurant. This of course has its knock on effect with the distinct lack of crockery etc, and too few staff to deal with the amount of people. To their credit whey worked very hard under a great deal of pressure. Our best bet was just going to the main bar for an aperitif whilst the queue died down and let the dust settle. Patience is a virtue!!

We also found at times that when ordering cocktails we would be told that they had run out of rum. Having gone to another bar they also had run out. This seems somewhat strange considering rum is one of their main commodities in Cuba. I can’t believe its all been exported manuel! Mint I can understand but good old Cuban Rum!! OK, life is too short let’s try dos Cerveza por favour sorry senyor no Cerveza. The bar staff at all times were always apologetic and did offer us alternatives, this is obviously a management resources issue.

The only great change for us was the Cubanito Bar. The Cubanito Bar in the past was a hive of activity and purely for the adults in the evening to relax without the children and provide a change of environment from the main bar and its entertainment. The Cubanito Bar offered far more opportunity to converse with other holiday makers residing at SCG without having the background noise from the ongoing entertainment at the main bar. The Cubanito Bar is now somewhat lifeless and for those returning should be aware that this bar is supposed to close at 11 pm but by 10.30 pm the phone rings and the bar person has effectively closed the bar and shoots off. This happened during our stay on most nights. Although this was brought to the attention of the management it seemed to fall on deaf ears. On a number of occasions individual holiday makers including myself would go back to their rooms and provide their own duty free spirits or buy from the shop bottles of rum to supplement the lack off stock at the Cubanito Bar. Again this would appear to be a management resources issue. You do feel as though there is a trend forming or a hidden agenda with regard to holding back on the stock, or lack of. Very embarrassing considering this is an All Inclusive Hotel.

For those who like seafood and lobster well you are in for a treat, just along the beach heading away from the resort is a small shack restaurant. Over the years they have provided some excellent food. This year was no different and we decided to take some old friends from the past and a few new acquaintances we have recently met. What a superb meal and every one enjoyed themselves that much we did it again. Give it a go well worth the pesos!

I do not wish to be unsportsmanlike but the only downside of our holiday which was a topic of debate amongst holiday makers I came into contact with during our stay was the so called professional and amateur Kite Surfers who would kite surf along the low shallows of water nearest to the beach and surf in-between families and bathers of all ages. It appears that although the majority of kite surfers keep away from this area a few maverick kite surfers are bringing this sport into disrepute (they know who they are!). It does shows a total lack and disregard to the safety of those in the water, a complete lack of common sense and at the same time tainting those kite surfers who are being professional. It must be said, that the gravity of their actions will ultimately result in a serious accident which is only waiting to happen! Having spoken with Manuel and the Thomas Cook Rep it appears that this sport is un-regulated; that is to say there are no exclusion zone markers in the form of buoys’, no signs and no way of warning bathers. One would think that one or both parties have a responsibility if not liability of duty of care for bathers. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a number of kite surfers who don’t have liability insurance. I am aware that during our stay at the hotel they had made a token gesture by putting one orange buoy out along a 1 km stretch! Maybe this is an opportunity to get some formal action plan or directive from the Cuban Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz as to who is responsibly or liable for duty of care in relation to the above subject matter. Once that has been defined then it is easier to point the finger, or not.

So families and bathers beware!! Thomas Cook offer Sun, Sea and Sand not just the swimming pool. As long as there is no wind you are safe from the maverick kite surfers. To those professional kite surfers please do not be offended.

On the flip side we resorted to the tranquillity and for peace of mind to swim and snorkel at Pilar Beach without constantly bobbing around like seals looking out for maverick kite surfers back at the hotel. This is not part of the all inclusive deal and you can get there from the hotel on a opened double decker bus. Timings of departure are available at customer reception. The beach is about 15 mins from SCG for a mere 5 pesos each. You will find there is a small restaurant which offers good food and refreshments at a reasonable cost and all necessary ablutions. This trip is a must even if it is just for a visit or around trip on the bus.

Our stay and catching up with old friends was yet again delightful. The staff, as always were excellent, thank you again. The weather was top quality and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Our main concern goes without saying and regretfully we are yet undecided as to whether we will return until a significant improvement has been made with regard to the duty of care in relation to the un-regulated maverick kite surfing.
