Friends of ours and my husband and I just arrived back in Ontario this am from beautiful Cayo Coco. We stayed at the Memories Flamenco Beach Resort for a week. This was our second time travelling to Cuba, so we knew some of the things to expect. We choose this resort based on the reviews on trip advisor, I love reading about "real life experiences".
Check In / Room
I would like to start off by saying the value for the money was decent. Memories Flamenco has mastered the ideal check in process. I am so impressed with how easy and painless they made it, which was a great first impression. We arrived at the resort where a few staff greeted us - we didn't even have to go to the reception desk - we were handed a package with our room keys, map and already booked a la carte times. This was fantastic! We headed straight to our room and was wowed by our honeymoon suite. The room was clean, fresh and very modern. The only complaint we had about the room was the bed - I can sleep anywhere, standing up, sitting down, on a hard floor etc - but nothing compared to this unbelievably hard, full of springs mattress.
The staff were very friendly - from the maids to the maintenance - everyone had smiles and greeted you. Jesus was the hotel manager, he was always present in the hotel and very sincere. The bad: I have never been to a resort where you had to bring your own drink to the buffet for lunch and dinner as there were not enough waiters. Breakfast was great as you could help yourself to juice, however lunch and dinner - if you wanted a drink you had to track down a waiter, and wait and wait until dinner was over before they remembered to bring your order. The bar was awful, again not enough staff and you had to wait for a very long time to be served (even if you tipped well).
The food was ok for the first few days, however got old fast as it was the same thing everyday. There was absolutely no variety. We have travelled to many places before and other resorts do theme nights, not here - the exact same thing over and over. The 24 snack bar was fantastic in a sense it was 24 hours, however again - no variety. I would NOT recommend this resort if food is high on your priority list. I also strongly recommend bringing your own ketchup as we did, it makes it a little better:)
I was really disappointed in the drinks. Again, it was always a struggle to get a drink, but once you did - the pop was always flat, the beer was sometimes flat and the mixed drinks were awful and way to strong. They did not offer blender drinks which was very disappointing as I am not a huge drinker, but would have loved to have a blender drink here and there. Tip - bring your own cooler cup, the plastic cups they use are like shot glasses.
The grounds were beautiful. Always clean and well maintained. The pool was great, it was clean and there were plenty of chairs for everyone. The walkways were nice and direct, some nights the lights didn't work so it was quite a dark walk back to your room. Overall, the resort exceeded my expectations in this area. The beach was ok, it was quite rocky - not the best beach we have been to.
We took a day trip in to the city of Moron. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this. NEVER have I ever felt so uncomfortable. We have travelled to numerous other places (including Mexico 3 times) and always enjoy going to see where/how others live and always felt comfortable doing so, but not here. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by locals right off the bat - my husband who is 6'3 was blocked by a local who asked him if he remembered him. My husband said no, the local then took off his glasses and had a black eye. Again my husband said no sorry, I don't remember you. Him and another local followed us EVERYWHERE, constantly trying to walk in between/separate my husband and I and our friends who were with us. We asked these men to please stop following us 3 separate times and they would not. They followed us into every store, down every isle and through the market. Do not take anything including flowers from the locals - they expect money for everything. An older lady shoved a flower down my shirt - after I politely told her several times no gracis and then asked me for money. Friends of ours brought a bag of goodies for the local children, however couldn't even open the bag as adult locals swarmed them asking for things. I couldn't wait to get back to the resort - AGAIN, WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this trip.
We took the catamaran for a day trip, it was beautiful as always. We really enjoyed this - snorkeling was good, beaches were beautiful and a must see. Tip - bring bread to snorkel with, you will attract more fish to see:)
Night entertainment was fantastic. The shows were great! Lots of effort and detail into everyone of them. No complaints in night entertainment department.
Day time entertainment was not great however. They did a few things, but nothing to engage everyone. A sample of a game they played was to have a few guests blow up balloons, they first one to break theirs won.
I would recommend this resort for couples with children as there were quite a few smaller kids there, and tonnes of babies that seemed to have a great time. The kids club was always closed, which I didn't understand as there were so many kids there.
Overall this resort was decent value for the money we paid. It is a beautiful place to go and relax, however due to the food, drinks, lack of staff and beds - I would not return to this resort. I hope my review helps others:)
The resort is not a large scale resort, any room you choose is still close to the pool and not a far...
