“Sand and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2012

This was our first stop during our trip through the BVI's and it was the most memorable as well. There was no real office for check in when we arrived so we wandered over to the Soggy Dollar where there were about 20 people gathered around the bar waiting for drinks. Since we weren't ordering drinks, I thought it was ok to interupt and ask where we could check in. The bartender (Simone), immediately stopped bartending and showed us to our room - leaving a crowded bar with just another bartender. We felt important.

The cottages are great. Two things stood out during our tour of the cottage... 1. No air conditioning. This didn't matter since there were two fans in the room. This didn't affect our sleep at all - open the screened windows and it felt great. 2. There is no room key. This concerned us for about a second before we realized it simply wasn't a problem here.

After we dropped our bags off, we went back to the Soggy Dollar and there were even more people around the bar. Simone immediately noticed us behind the crowd and made us her number one priority. Wow! And every time we went back as well. The pain killers were so good. Once you try these you'll be disappointed trying them anywhere else.

We only had lunch there but were very impressed with the quality of food - not standard bar food. The chicken salad and fish sandwich were delicious.

We wanted to catch the last ferry of the day, and asked for a late check out. Another guest had booked our cottage so we would have to move our stuff. Winsome (another employee) simply transferred us to one of the two AC rooms tha were vacant - I know we left a lot of sand.

The beach, environment and people were amazing. My wife did not want to leave.

We been to several Caribbean islands, and loved them all, but this is the only place that we said we want to revisit. The property is fantastic but the service from Simone and Winome is what truly made the visit special.

“Counting the days until I can get back there”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2012

My first visit to Jost was 2 years ago on the day ferry from STJ...I took one look at The Sandcastle and knew I HAD to come back and stay. Well this year, on a girl's trip, I got to do just that. We had both beachfront cottages for 2 nights. I can tell you, it wasn't long enough. The staff is so welcoming and friendly. They take such good care of you. I had read somewhere that those that return again and again keep tacking on nights...and I can see why. Next trip I definitely want to stay longer.....it's so amazing. The food is very good also. We had dinner there one of the nights and it was superb. We had the chicken roti for lunch both days...sooooo good. At night, after dinner, it's so peaceful and we were able to see The Southern Cross ( thanks to Debicor, the previous poster ) All in all...a little slice of heaven...

“THE place to stay on Jost Van Dyke.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2012

There are other places to stay on Jost Van Dyke, but the location of the Sandcastle makes it the best, hands down. There is nothing that compares to being able to walk out onto beautiful White Bay in the morning and have it all to yourself.

We found check-in and out to be very easy. The staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and accommodating during our entire stay. Wonderful hospitality.

We stayed in one of the two air conditioned rooms. I need a/c! The rooms are extremely close to the beach, but nestled back in the tropical gardens for great privacy. Our room was large, comfortably furnished, clean, and had lots of extras like a small refrigerator we kept snacks and drinks in, lots of books, and beach towels.

The Sandcastle has lots of great beach chairs, tables, hammocks, floats, noodles, and a kayak and a paddleboard for guests use, which was fantastic. The proximity to the Soggy Dollar Bar and the other bars that line White Bay is also wonderfully convenient.

At night, the Sandcastle restaurant serves a wonderful, romantic, candlelight dinner. The food was good, especially the painkiller ice cream! You need to "sign up" by 5:00 p.m. by going to the bar and getting the dinner book. You simply write your name by an available dinner time and look through the menu. You actually write down you food selections. At your dinner time, just show up, find a great table, sit down, and they bring your food to you.

Coffee was always ready in the morning, and you can just go grab yourself a cup. I loved getting my coffee and taking it to a chair by the ocean. No people, no boats, just the sound of the waves that early in the morning. If you want breakfast, you sign up the day before. You don't order, you just arrive and they bring you whatever it is they are serving that day.

Soggy Dollar Bar also serves the world's BEST bloody mary. They have a great lunch too, and terrific painkillers.

For us, 5 nights at the Sandcastle was absolute perfection. I have never been so relaxed at the end of a vacation in my life!

“Heaven on earth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2012

Sandcastles is a must if you want to experience one of the most beautiful beaches in the caribbean. It's a quirky place with 4 cottages and 2 AC rooms set less than 30 steps to the water surrounded by lush tropical flowering folliage. The staff of Sandcastles and Soggy Dollar take care of you like you are visiting family. The cottages are spotlessly clean. Each day starts with quiet mornings void of people with views of Tortola, St John and St. Thomas., an occasional jogger or person walking the beach, a sail boat or two bobbyingi in the bay and a few sand crabs digging holes in the sand. Breakfasts start your day at 9am, consisting of egg dish or pancakes (depending on the day), fresh fruit and juice, all individually prepared. Coffee is available whatever time you wake up. Day trippers start arriving about 10am by ferry and by boats any time after. After spending the day lying in the sun, floating in the water, drinking painkillers, swapping caribbean stories with people "visiting for the day", the beach clears of all of the interlopers and you again have the solitude of an empty white sand beach to sit, smoke a stoggie if that's your preference and contemplate wheither or not there is life on other planets because the sky is filled with a carpet of twinkling lights and falling stars. Dinners are created by culinary school trained chefs that would rival 5 star ratings. You fall asleep to the occasional bird chirpping and sounds of water lapping to shore. When you awake, you get to do it all over again.! Definately a piece of heaven on earth if you're lucky enough to experience it.

Room Tip: No AC in cottages but fans and breezes keep you comfortable at night.

“Nightmare on Sunday”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2012

Recently, the Soggy Dollar Bar was reviewed as one of the 7 best party places in the Caribbean, especially on Sunday when noisy motor boats come over from St Thomas. For those of us who have loved the place for a decade or more, it has a become a nightmare. Mornings are still idyllic and evenings occasionally provide the quiet candlelight dinners that the hotel promotes, but not often enough. We may have to seek a new destination.
