“Counting the days until I can get back there”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2012

My first visit to Jost was 2 years ago on the day ferry from STJ...I took one look at The Sandcastle and knew I HAD to come back and stay. Well this year, on a girl's trip, I got to do just that. We had both beachfront cottages for 2 nights. I can tell you, it wasn't long enough. The staff is so welcoming and friendly. They take such good care of you. I had read somewhere that those that return again and again keep tacking on nights...and I can see why. Next trip I definitely want to stay longer.....it's so amazing. The food is very good also. We had dinner there one of the nights and it was superb. We had the chicken roti for lunch both days...sooooo good. At night, after dinner, it's so peaceful and we were able to see The Southern Cross ( thanks to Debicor, the previous poster ) All in all...a little slice of heaven...

There are other places to stay on Jost Van Dyke, but the location of the Sandcastle makes it the best, hands down. There is nothing that compares to being able to walk out onto beautiful White Bay in the morning and have it all to yourself.

We found check-in and out to be very easy. The staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and accommodating during our entire stay. Wonderful hospitality.

We stayed in one of the two air conditioned rooms. I need a/c! The rooms are extremely close to the beach, but nestled back in the tropical gardens for great privacy. Our room was large, comfortably furnished, clean, and had lots of extras like a small refrigerator we kept snacks and drinks in, lots of books, and beach towels.

The Sandcastle has lots of great beach chairs, tables, hammocks, floats, noodles, and a kayak and a paddleboard for guests use, which was fantastic. The proximity to the Soggy Dollar Bar and the other bars that line White Bay is also wonderfully convenient.

At night, the Sandcastle restaurant serves a wonderful, romantic, candlelight dinner. The food was good, especially the painkiller ice cream! You need to "sign up" by 5:00 p.m. by going to the bar and getting the dinner book. You simply write your name by an available dinner time and look through the menu. You actually write down you food selections. At your dinner time, just show up, find a great table, sit down, and they bring your food to you.

Coffee was always ready in the morning, and you can just go grab yourself a cup. I loved getting my coffee and taking it to a chair by the ocean. No people, no boats, just the sound of the waves that early in the morning. If you want breakfast, you sign up the day before. You don't order, you just arrive and they bring you whatever it is they are serving that day.

Soggy Dollar Bar also serves the world's BEST bloody mary. They have a great lunch too, and terrific painkillers.

For us, 5 nights at the Sandcastle was absolute perfection. I have never been so relaxed at the end of a vacation in my life!

Sandcastles is a must if you want to experience one of the most beautiful beaches in the caribbean. It's a quirky place with 4 cottages and 2 AC rooms set less than 30 steps to the water surrounded by lush tropical flowering folliage. The staff of Sandcastles and Soggy Dollar take care of you like you are visiting family. The cottages are spotlessly clean. Each day starts with quiet mornings void of people with views of Tortola, St John and St. Thomas., an occasional jogger or person walking the beach, a sail boat or two bobbyingi in the bay and a few sand crabs digging holes in the sand. Breakfasts start your day at 9am, consisting of egg dish or pancakes (depending on the day), fresh fruit and juice, all individually prepared. Coffee is available whatever time you wake up. Day trippers start arriving about 10am by ferry and by boats any time after. After spending the day lying in the sun, floating in the water, drinking painkillers, swapping caribbean stories with people "visiting for the day", the beach clears of all of the interlopers and you again have the solitude of an empty white sand beach to sit, smoke a stoggie if that's your preference and contemplate wheither or not there is life on other planets because the sky is filled with a carpet of twinkling lights and falling stars. Dinners are created by culinary school trained chefs that would rival 5 star ratings. You fall asleep to the occasional bird chirpping and sounds of water lapping to shore. When you awake, you get to do it all over again.! Definately a piece of heaven on earth if you're lucky enough to experience it.

Room Tip: No AC in cottages but fans and breezes keep you comfortable at night.

Recently, the Soggy Dollar Bar was reviewed as one of the 7 best party places in the Caribbean, especially on Sunday when noisy motor boats come over from St Thomas. For those of us who have loved the place for a decade or more, it has a become a nightmare. Mornings are still idyllic and evenings occasionally provide the quiet candlelight dinners that the hotel promotes, but not often enough. We may have to seek a new destination.

Great setting on one of the most beautiful beaches in the caribbean. Rooms are clean, the staff is very friendly. They have water toys just for the guests. Food at dinner time was out of this world. Can't wait to come back.

Sometimes when people stay at the same place year after year they find it not as wonderful as they first thought it to be. NOT the case at Sandcastle. We have been back in Maine for 3 weeks following our 5th yearly stay. We are tan, rested, relaxed and happy. Another great vacation. We stayed in Garden Cottage # 3 again and what a treat to hear the waves every night. The cabin had a few new touches and of course we loved the outdoor shower. That never happens in Maine. We arrived late, after dark on the last ferry of the day from Tortola.Mic was coming ashore and he stopped to say hi and welcome back. Tina & Simone met us with smiles and hugs. As I reached down to pick up my suitcase, it was gone and so was Simone. Even though we know our way around she took our bags to our room and Tina said she had set a table for us for dinner. Sana & Shaneek made sure we were fed and happy. The staff is wonderful. As I have said in a previous review, if you want them for anything, they will help but if you just want to be left alone, you wont see them until its check out time.

Kudo's to Chef Dwayne! He makes some delicous meals. He made a ham & dumpling soup for Christmas dinner that was outstanding. So good that I and some of the other guests requested it for another meal a few nights later. And yes, he did make it again. He came to the dining room when everyone was finsihed eating and stopped to speak with everyone and asked if their dinners were satisfactory. Nice touch.

The beach is just as everyone says. Beautiful. Wonderful. Awesome. Yes, the boaties show up everyday around 10:00 a.m. but its fun to sit and watch the people. Sandcastle offers a roped off area by the rentals for guests only with chairs and hammocks if you want to get away from the crowd.

I can't think of a single negative thing about our stay which is why we keep going back every year. Already booked for December 2012.

I do want to mention that if Tina & Winsome tell you they are going to do something, dont worry, they will. If they give you information about a schedule, the information is correct.

I also want to say that during our stay in December 2010 the owners, Tish & Jerry were onsight almost every day and night and we found them to be very personable and friendly. They ate Christmas dinner with us and we had some enjoyable converations with them.

One more thing before I go put my boots on to shovel snow off my deck, if you want to hang around the bar after dinner and after the bar closes, just tell one of the staff. They will help you out.

Thanks again Sandcastle Staff for letting us enjoy your piece of paradise. See you in December!!

We rented the 2 air conditioned cabins for a week over Halloween so that we could go to Foxy's Halloween party. The staff was excellent and couldn't have been nicer. The rooms are immaculate and have everything that you need. You sign up for dinner in the morning and then go to the outdoor dining room at 7 to be served. The food was amazing. We enjoyed meeting the other dinner guests who anchored their boats and came in for dinner. After dinner we would all sit at the bar (Soggy Dollar) and play music and dance til 10 or 11. Don't know what the other reviewer is talking about that you can't talk after 7. Dinner isn't even til 7.
Waking up to that beautiful beach and breathtaking view is something that everyone needs to experience. But don't let it get out....we would like to keep it a secret! LOL
