“Good value BUT !”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2014

We were probably unlucky as scaffolding adorned the front of the property and parking was very hit or miss.
Our room was large, clean & comfortable albeit many stairs to negotiate.
Most of the staff seemed jaded probably after a hectic Christmas.
The food was second rate.

Room Tip: It's a route march to level three.

I have stopped here on several occasions whilst working in Woking.
Good Points
You can park your car here, the food is good value and the real ales are also good

Bad Points
The interior is a bit shabby; a lick of paint might help.
The accommodation is poorly constructed with creaky floorboards and poor levels of noise insulation.

We stayed there during 4 nights in September 2013. On arrival, we had to pay for the full stay. When ordering a drink or food, you also have to pay beforehand. The pub itself has a pleasant atmosphere. The guest rooms are quite small, but very clean. The double beds are definitely small, too small. Only one open cupboard, with 1 shelf, already in use with extra blankets and pillows. The en-suite bathroom is good and clean. Continental breakfast is included and of standard quality. Croissants are always cold and apparently from the previous day. No cheese or sausage, only sweets. In general, we felt that attention to the breakfast table was too low. Used tables were only occasionally cleared. We always had to put aside the things left behind by other guests. Remarks about it were not appreciated. And if the sugar was not finished, then the croissants , or the spoons, or... The Inn should pay much more attention to this. We were fortunate in getting a room at the backside. On the front they are definitely noisy: pub below and a busy street next to your bedroom. Parking is available, but limited

Room Tip: On the backside!

We stayed here for a night before a visit to McLaren and it had everything we needed for a reasonable price. The room was ok, only downside was lack of coooling other than a portable fan, but it was exceptionally warm.

Meals were OK in the attached pub, though slightly over-priced, a few items not well-stocked for breakfast and clearly some disgruntled staff airing their laundry in listening distance from the guests.

I would stay here again if I was in the area.

Would stay here

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

We have stayed here 4 or 5 times and always found it a pleasant place, with great value for money. First let me iterate the good points.
The housekeeping is excellent, (better than many many other places I have been). The housekeeper is so anxious to please and really does well. Rooms are spotless and well appointed.
The staff ( the great majority) are pleasant are also anxious to please.
This place is wonderfully placed for taking the train to London ( 10 minutes walk to the station).
There is free parking.
The pub/restaurant has a great atmosphere.
Now the not so good points
There is new management and there is a long way to go here. (One of the staff mentioned in passing that there is a lot to learn yet. Read into that what you will) I got the impression of greatly diminished morale, which is often the case when staff turns over, but most of the "oldies"are great and it would be a pity if they left.
I get the impression that everything is being done by the book and there clearly are many cutbacks compared to previous visits. From 7.30 to 10.30 on Saturday night there were 8 people in the bar, (4 of them were us), although there was a big increase after 10.30, but I suspect this sort of footfall is unsustainable.
On 2 occasions out of 3 after "running a tab" we were overcharged. This was put right quickly, the second night not so easily.
Food has deteriorated badly, with portions being scrimped on. Although on Sunday night the chef outdid himself with generous portions and well cooked food. Breakfasts are obviously being cut back, necessitating various requests for things available previously. (there were 3 croissants available for breakfast on Monday morning).
There is one member of staff( Chris) who goes the extra mile and should be in management by now. He does everything involved in running an establishment, from cleaning to waiting on tables, bar service and even cooking. He is clearly very popular here, with many customers chatting to him as he raced about the restaurant/pub.
Amazingly some drinks ran out as did the beef for Sunday lunch. I guess this is new management learning skills again. There are also some new staff. But new employees coupled with a lack of language skills really caused problems (hence the overcharging on one occasion). Although the pleasantness and willingness to please could not be faulted, it is just the accuracy that needs a bit of work.
There is a pub quiz which is more like a damp squib now compared to the sparkle of previous visits, which really seemed to draw the crowds in, but this time there were only 6 tables who took part, of which 2 left half way through. The impression there was to get it over with as quickly as possible, as opposed to previous visits when "a great time was had by all"
That said I will almost certainly visit again, mainly because of the welcome we receive by staff whom we are beginning to know very well and the proximity to the train station.
My main suggestion is to eat out and check your bar tab.

Room Tip: Rooms beginning with 3 ( 301, 302 etc) are enormous.

The hotel is basic but it's in a good location. It's within walking distance to the town and there is a good selection of shops to browse. I stayed here for one night only on my way to shoot at Bisley camp which is only few miles away.

The room is basic but can't complain as I came here to stay overnight, not to spend a luxurious holiday. I had room 309 with a non-opening window so it was quite hot but the fan was adequate enough to cool the room. The bed was exceptionally comfy so I slept quite well.

The staff were very helpful and polite. I arranged for my relatives to come and meet me at the hotel so we had a lovely evening meal, not top of the range cuisine but good enough. Drinks were reasonably priced too. The continental breakfast was ample, good selection of fruit tea which is what I like.

With free wifi, it's definitely a good value.
