“What a British way to spend a Sunday !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2010

We are members of National Trust so visited Chartwell whilst on holiday. It was a bit of a strange house, not at all as I'd imagined but very in keeping with the period. After visiting Blenheim Palace where Churchill was born I was a little underwelmed at where he chose to live his married life.

It was also a bit of a disappointment not to be able to see his bedroom. You can view it on the computer in the information display but can't actually visit it, why I've no idea and it's a great waste.

The grounds are vast and beautiful and lovely to have a picnic in. The outdoor sitting room is especially creative.

Glad I went but probably wouldn't return.

“A must for any Brit!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2009

Stunning gardens, lovely house and a great few hours out. I had been meaning to visit for some time but never got round to it, I shouldnt have left it so long!

This is a thoroughly interesting experience on many levels. The history and preservation of the grounds, house and various exhibitions are done to a high standard and made for an excellent time.

It is fairly expensive but worth considering a national trust membership.

“Excellent day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2009

Chartwell is a fairly expensive National Trust property to visit but when you see it you can understand why, for the house and grounds are superbly maintained.
The house, being relatively small in relation to the number of visitors, is subject to a timed admission policy. It is best to allow plenty of time for a visit and the premises are not open every day, even during the summer.
As one would expect, the house has plenty of Churchill memorabilia. Even allowing for the control on visitor numbers to the house, it was difficult to see everything on the summer Saturday I was there. A weekday visit may be better if you are anxious to see every exhibit in the house. Recommended.

“A fascinating insight into recent history.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2009

Being fairly local, i live less than thirty miles away, i was only here because i wanted to show my Spanish girlfriend a little of our history. Though born and bred in Essex i am from an Irish background and as such am not a very big fan of Mr Churchill but this was a wonderful experience for both of us. Chartwell has the ability to be both grand and unassuming, elegant and powerful. The building, with its extension still looks like a comfortable home, albeit one in the fifties. The grounds are exquisite and perfectly tended. On a day as warm and beautiful as yesterday i doubt there is a better view anywhere than that over the wield of Kent. Thank you Chartwell for a lovely afternoon.

“An enjoyable walk through history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2009

Chartwell is one of those places you experience on different levels. One is the beautiful place--the magnificent building; the interesting, attractively furnished rooms; the lovely grounds. The other is the feeling of being in the place where historic people lived, worked and entertained and imagining what went on there. I especially enjoyed seeing the wall which Sir Winston helped construct.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The facilities for visitors are well done including a cafe. Parking was plentiful. We noted that children are given a list of things to locate on the tour of the mansion to help keep their interest. The tour took us about half an hour, then we spent a lot of time wandering around the grounds. Highly recommended.
