I've visited many lidos and OAPs and Portishead OAP is outstanding and in my top 3! I love Portishead Open Air Pool - it's adorable!! One of my faves!! I wish it were my local pool!!
It's not just the swimming facilities - a long 33m pool, clean water and bright clean changing area (love the changing room curtains!) - that make this pool so special but the character of the buildings and people that work there! An' army' of wonderful volunteers keep this pool open and they obviously love and cherish it! The locals had to fight to keep this treasure from closing and you can tell that they love and adore it!
Every time i go, i meet such friendly staff - the new manager (Tash) and volunteers (Ray, Margaret, Peter) have been welcoming, friendly and informative and display utter passion for their jobs and the pool. It's lovely and a breath of fresh air! Previously i've chatted to Mike, Heather and Martine - who are exactly the same! I've chatted to swimmers and they're lovely too! They make this place what it is and give it its 'soul'!!
If you like retro / 60's architecture, you'll love and appreciate the design of the pool complex as a building - the diving boards & sun terrace are 'typical' of the era! The view from the top terrace is amazing - looks over the Bristol Channel / Estuary. The pool is situated next to a gorgeous lake area and exclusive housing. The town is really nice too (great charity shops, cafes).
Swimming is often choppy due to the breeze from the Channel - which makes it a challenge and a good work out! Sea stroke often required! It's great fun diving in and messing around in the deep end too!!
Entry prices are very reasonable and there's free parking too.
How lucky you are in Portishead to have this gorgeous pool on your doorstep!!
