“Good B&B in quiet location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

I have stayed at Rolands Croft three times now and have booked back in for a fourth stay in December 2012.

You would be hard worked to find a nicer guy than Pete who runs the place. Warm welcome, if you need to ask him anything he is very approachable.

Rooms are clean but do vary in size. Tea and coffee provided. Cable tv, wi-fi.
Full English breakfast in the morning, cooked and served by Pete, things like orange juice, tea and toast are self service.

B&B itself is a five minute drive from the M62 and the Xcite complex at Castleford. Some good takeaways down the hill in Featherstone itself and some good pubs within walking distance.

Room Tip: You are charged the same price for every room but the rooms within the main building are the bigger...

2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2012

I and my partner stayed at Rolands Croft Guesthouse over the Christmas holidays. Upon arrival, we were asked to pay in advance for our stay, without seeing our room. After payment, we were shown to a room with a double bed and an ensuite bathroom. Our bed had two flat pillows (so one each), and one towel to share in the bathroom, no hand towels. We asked for another towel and two more pillows, and got another bath towel that night, and two more pillows the following morning. The owner was friendly the first night, and the first morning during breakfast, but during the following mornings, he brought us our breakfast, forgot tea and coffee and ignored us. The room was shoddy, and the shower was a real problem - the tray you stand in when showering was not sealed properly, and so repeatedly soaked the floor - you could actually see the water running from the shower tray in rivers. When we attempted to dry the floor with the towels and bathmat in the morning, and hung the towels and mat up on the radiator to dry, we came back that evening to find that we hadn't been given fresh towels, but that the soaking towels were simply hung up again in the bathroom. This was repeated for several days, and we ended up buying our own towels from primark, and just leaving the floor soaked. The shower was useable really only if the people in the room next to ours were not showering, as the water went from very hot to very cold throughout the shower, with no notice, if both showers were on at the same time. The walls were also very thin between rooms, so we could hear everything the family next door was saying. The hospitality tray in the room was filthy, and when we opened the desk drawers, we found dirty cups in them. The tablecloths and placemats in the breakfast room were also dirty, and rubbish (empty sugar packets, etc) that we left from our first breakfast were there to greet us every subsequent morning.

An additional problem was that on the second morning, another family came in for breakfast, and decided to bring their dog into the breakfast room. Both my partner and I like animals, but it was not a small dog, people were eating, and the owner of the guesthouse allowed it without asking anyone else in the breakfast room at the time.

Only positive thing was that the bed was very comfy.

Not a big deal if you're only staying for a few days like we were, but for £50, this place is overpriced for what you actually get in terms of quality. We wouldn't stay here again. A certificate on the wall of the breakfast room informed us that this place had 3 stars, but from our experience, it isn't a 3-star guesthouse.
