This pub used to be pretty awful. In Autumn 2013 new management took over and began renovating this ancient place. Out went the Sky Sport and slot machines, in came log fires, tasteful decor and a great menu that I've been working my way through with each visit. I can heartily recommend this place. Everything I've tried here, including the local ales from Dunham and Mobberly, have been a real treat. The staff are great too, esp the head waiter.
One quibble - and it's such a tiny thing - the signature starter of soft-yolked hand-made Scotch Egg isn't as good as I'd hoped, in fact I found it a bit heavy going. The menu was available long before the pub reopened and I was really looking forward to trying one. If anyone connected with the Ship is ever in London, and pops into a pub in Shepherds Bush called The Princess Victoria, they should sample the Scotch Egg served there and perhaps appreciate how much lighter, textured and seasoned the sausage can be. I doubt many people will be as pernickety about scotch eggs.
Don't let this quibble put you off going
