“Totally Transformed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2014

This pub used to be pretty awful. In Autumn 2013 new management took over and began renovating this ancient place. Out went the Sky Sport and slot machines, in came log fires, tasteful decor and a great menu that I've been working my way through with each visit. I can heartily recommend this place. Everything I've tried here, including the local ales from Dunham and Mobberly, have been a real treat. The staff are great too, esp the head waiter.

One quibble - and it's such a tiny thing - the signature starter of soft-yolked hand-made Scotch Egg isn't as good as I'd hoped, in fact I found it a bit heavy going. The menu was available long before the pub reopened and I was really looking forward to trying one. If anyone connected with the Ship is ever in London, and pops into a pub in Shepherds Bush called The Princess Victoria, they should sample the Scotch Egg served there and perhaps appreciate how much lighter, textured and seasoned the sausage can be. I doubt many people will be as pernickety about scotch eggs.

Don't let this quibble put you off going

“No dogs allowed!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

The pub has been taken over and refurbed very well by the owners of the Dog Inn Peover so ignore all reviews before 2014. It is now a very nice country pub again, but being so close to Styal Woods and Styal Mill I feel they have really missed a trick by not allowing dog walkers in at least one room as they do at their other pubs.
We will be back in the summer to sit outside in the garden!

“Worth Waiting For”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2014

This small pub in the village of Styal had become very run down over recent years. The new owners have really shown how to carry out a complete make-over whilst maintaining the overall feel of a real country pub. open fires, brick walls, beams etc.
They've added a great menu, with many new twists on standard dishes, with a wide variety of beers and wines.
The Ship is always well staffed, very friendly and helpful.
Frankly it is everything that the village has been waiting for and I am sure that visitors to the village will really appreciate this venue.

“Pub grub”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2014

Menu looked good but food did not live up to expectations. When asked by our server if the starter of soft shell crab popcorn was enjoyed The answer of "soggy batter, no taste or texture of crab meat," (which by the way was served in a half pint beer glass mug!!!!) and only a shrug from the waitress in response..... The chicken & ham pie was well sized but sorry to say the pie filling was dry. On the better choice of a huge portion of ribs I have to say they were succulent and cooked beautifully, the salad & dressing was devine too. Unfortunately the desert of fruit crumble was lacking the crumble topping - more like a scattering of crunchy crumbs on top. This was served with too sweet custard. Really expected better. Not sure if we would eat there again.
