“A gastropub experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

One of our favourite local pubs with exquisite food. Pricier than other pubs around, but it is worth it, we've back many times.

“Thursday Lunch, great value, great staff, great food................”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

Enjoyed our first visit to The Chequers this Friday. Warm welcome, lovely wood burners going flat-out to combat the January cold and great menu.
We both thought the food, service & ambience to be first class - thanks everybody at The Chequers

“A mixed bag but ultimately enjoyable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

A number of notable pluses. Lovely welcome and attentive staff throughout. We came for lunch with our two daughters and sat in one of the bar areas with cosy wood burning stove so the atmosphere was very relaxing. The main menu has more than adequate choice and was supplemented by a more basic and less expensive bar menu. We wanted to try this gastropub's fine dining option as there are a number of excellent alternative venues within reach, three of which have Michelin stars. Despite how busy it was, the food was prepared and brought to table quickly. My wife's scallops were fresh and perfectly cooked, my daughter's pigeon was over and consequently a little tough, and my asparagus soup acceptable. The bread was fresh and I assumed baked on the premises and the sparkling mineral water was properly chilled. The two main courses were a little disappointing, my calves liver was over-cooked (which is an altogether too common a crime) and my wife's fish dish was underwhelming. My daughter's lamb dish was well executed. The saucing was good with the exception of the pigeon where the dressing was overly acidic. To summarise: 3 starters, 3 mainss and 2 bottles of water - £88 inc service. If I could give rating of 3.5 I would. It is unlikely I would return unless I was passing by and felt like a spot of lunch. Patrons appeared to be largely affluent retired Guildford types.

Many visits over the past year. All great. WONDERFUL FOOD. Good pub atmosphere. At last somewhere decent near Cranleigh!

“At last... a great pub near Cranleigh”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

As a former resident of Cranleigh... for 30+ years, it was always a challenge to find a decent pub serving great food, good beer in a nice atmosphere... Finally, after decades, there is a place.

Congrats to Tim & Katy Neal and all the team at the Chequers for delivering a great gastro-locals pub.

We've eaten here four times over the past year when visiting family in the area. Not been disappointed once.

The food is hearty, full of flavour, not for dieters with servings ample. Wine list is extensive and reasonable value. Good selection of ales.

The locals can be a bit 'snooty' at the bar but don't let them put you off! We prefer to eat in the bar side as the restaurant space can be a little cold in atmosphere if it's not full.

Service can be chaotic when it's busy but hey this is a pub not a London restaurant!

Do book ahead as the 'word is out': This pub is great!
