“Pub-come-restaurant. Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

Used to go many years ago when it a pub, serving casual food, but first time visit as restaurant on early Friday evening. First impressions entering the reception/bar area.... oh it's still a pub, as it was very crowded & noisy in the bar area and as for a few moments we looked for someone to greet us.... we later managed to get through the crowd and were seated at nice fairly central table for but unfortunately backed on to the bar area where people were stood drinking/talking, and over looking...... Perhaps it was just because it was bank holiday, as there were also many young families also dining. In general it was a busy warm atmosphere all round but with the added background bar noise for our/or similar tables. Good menu & specials selection which were all locally sourced. Main courses vary from basic/cheap pub type to the more refined. Really enjoyed our main courses off the specials. Desert menu was a bit limited/basic, ours was ok, but expensive for what you get. Service was good and attentive. On the whole, it's worth a visit

“had better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

We went with our party of 12 last night and for the prices they charge the food was mediocre to say the least, I dont mind paying the extra for good food but last night i wasnt impressed with the food quality and it will probably be our first and last visit.

“3rd time lucky”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

This was our third visit in a year. The first time the service was so bad that we were given £40 of vouchers as compensation, so we returned and tried again. The service was indifferent again but on both occasions the food was excellent. Friends always say we had been unlucky so went again last week, on a week night rather than a weekend. They had changed a few things and it was so much better. Now you can book no matter the size of your party. Before you could only book at the weened if your party was 6 or more and hence there were lengthy waits for a table if you were less than 6!!
Before, you had to order at the bar for both drinks and food. Now there is table service. The food remains very good, so all in all I would now recommend you perhaps try it if you are in the area and want gastro pub food with some good local fresh produce.

“Excellant food, shame not enough customers to create a warm atmosphere.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013 via mobile

I booked a table for Sunday evening when we arrived the restaurant was very busy with family bookings as we were seated most of the restaurant was empting leaving a distinct lack of atmosphere for the duration of our meal.
Fortunatly the food and servlce was excellant would definatly go again and recomend to my friends. Try to ensure there will be mire than 2 couples in the restraunt next time.

“Good, but only just 4*”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

Been a few years ago on a couple of occasions when it was very busy and quite novel. However, this was a Wednesday night and was very quiet. The staff were very attentive and welcoming and service was first class. The ambience is no longer novel and has been copied in several like establishments. Menu still contains some very interesting choices but is very limited - not extensive by any standards and could be considered quite restricted. Of the food highlights were the North Sea Cod Dab and the Lamb Hotpot but only ok were the Shrimps (hard with a runny thin sauce) and Bacon Chop - good sauce but very fatty and chewwy meat. Finally the car park at the rear is steep - but that is down to the land although could have been dug out more - but there was little or no lighting and was quite dangerous. Some improvements needed.
