“Lovely food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2014

I have used this restraunt for eat in and take away, both are very good, the restraunt has always been quite quiet when I have eaten in which is a shame as the service and food are lovely. the waiting staff are very attentive and the ambiance is good. Take away food from here is always of a good consistant standard and I would reccommend to anyone.

Another great meal at the China Garden. Superb service and staff with a sense of humour.

Highly recommended.

“Great restaurant, poor cuisine...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014

Visited here for an intimate meal with my wife. Chinese food has always been my favourite and I pride myself on being able spot first class chinese cuisine especially Cantonese having had 40yrs of practice. The owners run the Garden group www.gardenrestaurants.co.uk so also have China Garden Express and Jade Garden Takeaways in the Cannock area and we have had take out food from them which is decent quality, especially Jade Garden.
The China Garden restaurant is very well appointed inside and is a really nice setting for a meal. Being a Monday we expected it to be quiet but we called ahead to check they had a table just in case.. When we arrived there was a party of 6 chinese people at one end of the room and there was another couple just leaving... we were greeted on arrival and they confirmed that we had called ahead and sat us at a table for two against the side wall at one end of the room... other than the party of 6 who were quite vocal (which we later worked out that they were owners or something to do with the owners) we were the only other diners.
The two waiting staff were very attentive and quickly got us a couple of drinks the Carling Lager is £3.30 a pint so comparable to local pubs and looking at the wine list a bottle of decent wine will set you back between £14 and £20 a bottle. we were thirsty so opted for the lager which was draught there are also bottled beers available. On looking over the menu we chose to have a set meal for £16.50 per person which gave us Yuk Sung to start followed by Sweet & Sour Chicken Cantonese, Beef with Cashew nuts in a bird nest and also and a King Prawn Dish too... we also ordered some Sesame Prawn Toast to go with the Yuk Sung starter. The staff delivered the Sesame Prawn Toast and the Yuk Sung with Lettuce Leaves quickly, the Sesame Toast was absolutely delicious but the Yuk Sung was quite poor it was supposed to be made with minced Pork however, there was no discernable meat content in the dish, so much so that we asked if they had given us what they term as 'Vegetable Sung' instead but apparently not, what we had was not tastless but was rather slimy and not granular like minced pork. As soon as our drink were close to finished they were on us for another drink which we refused at first and the second time they asked we did have another.
They then delivered plates and knives and forks for the main course... we asked if it was possible to have bowls and chopsticks, which was no problem and delivered instantly. The three mains arrived together with a bowl each of hot egg fried rice and a serving spoon. Unfortunately the brilliant service was undone by really poor quality of food... The King Prawns were a little chewy but tasty and ok, the Sweet and Sour Chicken Cantonese was nicely cooked and tasty but the quality of the chicken was not good and it was a little cardboardy and chewy we felt it tasted like it had been twice cooked and finally the beef dish wasn't good the beef was again slimy and chewy and tasted very seafoody. The bird nest was simply moulded and microwaved noodles, moderately tasty but a little like stale crisps or tortilla chips in taste... We eat what we could but didn't opt for anything else...
The disconcerting bit was in watching the food that came out to the chinese folk at the end of the room, it certainly didn't look of the same quality that they were serving to us??

Such a pity, the two waiting staff were very attentive and the food was delivered quickly and the surroundings should have made for a setting to enjoy good food, unfortunately only mediocre food arrived edible but not tatsy or anything to enliven the senses like other chinese food we have experienced.
Total Bill was £52 of which £14 was for drinks we did leave a small tip based on the service but definately not the food!

Decided to visit this restaurant despite some of the previous reviews but should have taken note! Service was poor, it was diffficult to catch the staffs attention if you wanted to order a drink etc, portion sizes were good even though I had read that they were small - they must have changed them since that review eg a portion of spring rolls had 10!! instead of the usual 4 but there was very little filling, just over cooked crunchy pastry, though the spare ribs were lovely.
When the main courses came there was more disappointment, the satay chicken and the chicken with ginger and spring onion both tasted the same .Except for the great slices of ginger there was no ginger flavour in the sauce and the satay was the most tasteless satay sauce I've ever had. Then there was the shredded chicken in salt and pepper which turned out to be very thin pieces of chicken covered in a hard, chewy batter with lots of chopped onions and sliced chilli which at least added some flavour. However a portion of fried rice was more like half a portion compared to other places so don't offer to share with anyone. At one point we asked to order a drink and the waiter said "another one!!" how rude!! then I had lemonade spilt all over my hand as a glass was passed across me. Then the bill came and we had been charged for starters we hadn't had due to an error with the touch screen - if you press too hard it counts 2 portions apparently - you'd think they would know this and check what they're doing. Overall a disappointing meal, next time we'll just stay in and get a take away from our usual Chinese as for what this cost we could have had an absolute banquet at half the price. Won't be back.

Party of 8 for work lunch mid December. The food took ages, when it finally started to come out they were bringing plates that were not for us them the waitress started to argue with the chef in front of us as it seems he made all the mistakes. Half of us had exactly the same sauce even thou we ordered different meals. We weren`t feeling well after lunch. Needless to say I won`t go back.
