“a great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

Nice location about 10 walking minutes from the train station, directly on the marina between the castle and the mighty Niesen mountain; excellent breakfast buffet, a good value for a 3 stars hotel in a relaxing swiss town

This hotel is beautifully situated and was, of course, the main reason for our booking rooms here. My husband and I, plus a friend, stayed for two nights in the Seegarten Marina and, although the view from our balcony was wonderful and both rooms were spacious, spotlessly clean and comfortable, it soon became clear that there was room for improvement. Through no fault of the hotel, we arrived in the middle of a heatwave and the rooms were stifling hot due to the lack of air conditioning. The latter, we could have accepted, but some other form of ventilation would have been appreciated. In spite of the heat, there were thick down covers on the beds when just a cotton sheet would have been sufficient. We had a furnished balcony overlooking the lake and this was great except for the fact that, in the heat of the afternoon, it was impossible to sit there due to the sun pouring in from the area not protected by the sun blind. It must be noted here that only rooms at the side of the building would encounter this inconvenience. A parasol would be a big help in summer.

We were somewhat disappointed with the staff. Reception was not particularly welcoming and we were told that our room (No. 102) was quiet. This turned out to be untrue since we were directly above the main restaurant and it was extremely noisy. In the evening we ate in the restaurant and, here again, we were not too impressed. Our waitress poured the wine into our glasses so fiercely thatit splashed on to the tablecloth and then, when she brought our meal, banged the plates down on to the table! We found the food O.K. but nothing more. It was also rather expensive. We were surprised to read that so many reviewers raved about it. The second evening we tried the restaurant again and obviously there were far too many diners in comparison to the number of waiters. Everyone was stressed and had no time to be courteous or even informative. Sadly, it was not the restful evening we had anticipated.

There was a problem concerning the new door-locking system of our friend's room but this was eventually solved satisfactorily.

I think we would return to the Seegarten Marina but definitely not in the high season, and we would request a room further away from the restaurant. It would be interesting to see if this very promising hotel could rise to our expectations either before our after the summer season. Maybe we just had a poor experience.

I have given this property three-stars only, mainly on account of the staff.

we just had a poor experience.

Room Tip: Request a lake-facing room but on an upper floor and away from the main restaurant.

As the name suggests, this hotel is located on the lake side, in the marina at Spiez.

The hotel is decorated in a traditional small /medium hotel style. This made a refreshing change from the chain hotels I have been staying in of late. The room was fine: clean, tidy and a good size for a single. However, there is no air-conditioning.

The hotel restaurant, which has exterior seating, overlook the lake and it makes a very pleasant spot to eat. The food was good too. No beer being servied the night I stayed - must be a local regulation about this I suppose.

The staff were friendly and spoke English.

These is car parking nearby, but I have a feeling this is subject to charge. Motorcycle parking (I was on a bike) is free. The ferry to the other side of the lake departs about two minutes walk from the hotel and near the departure point there are a number of restaurants, should you wish to eat outside of the hotel. The hotel is about 10/15 minutes from the motorway.

We spent 10 days in this lovely hotel in May 2012.

I cannot speak highly enough about the service in the hotel and the friendly staff. The hotel is a good standard three-star. The rooms are large enough, adequately furnished and kept scrupulously clean. The four dining rooms look over the lake and there are plenty of outside tables for use when the weather allows.

We were particularly impressed by the quality and quantity of food at dinner. We had booked half-board but did not expect to be provided with four-course meals every day beautifully cooked and excellently presented. The staff were attentive and the hotel Directors, Herr and Frau Keller, enquired after our satisfaction whenever they were on duty, which did seem to be most of the time!

Five minutes level walk takes you to the Spiez jetty from which you can catch boats to Interlaken and to Thun. The boats stop at various locations en-route and make for a very pleasant lake cruise as well as relaxing transport to the two towns. Spiez railway station gives access to the Swiss national railways and is an invigorating uphill walk from the hotel. As an alternative, a “Dotto” resort train stops at the jetty and also the railway station. Spiez is adjacent to the A6 motorway running from Bern to Interlaken with good road links into the mountains for those wishing to tour by car, as we did.

I have no hesitation in recommending this location and the Hotel Seegarten Marina to those wishing for a relaxing holiday in a beautiful location. We would certainly go again.

Room Tip: Choose between lake view rooms, at a premium, or those at the rear overlooking the castle. The rear...

Lovely hotel with a fantastic location- Lake facing, with the nice trails around. everything that you wnat to see in Spiez is close by- the lake, the castle and church, then vine yards, yes the train station is 15 mins by road-uphill, but we cant have everything close by.

my family( 3 of us) stayed for 2 nights and we loved it. the room was spacious with a fire place. clean rooms and toilets.

more than anything else good care and hospitality - break fast especially when we asked for toast which was not part of the buffet, it was served with smile. we loved the stay and spiez.

there are great trails near by- the faulensee is fabulous a plain walk around the shores of the Thun.

Highly recommended

We were happy to spend three days at the Seegarten Hotel in June 2011. Spiez is a quaint and charming town, particularly the neighbourhood at the idyllic bay. The location is delightful, at the picturesque Lake of Thun, framed by vineyards, with the high Alps visible at the horizon. This is also a great gateway for excursions to the nearby Jungfrau region, often overlooked by our international guests. It is preferable in many ways to nearby Interlaken: Less touristy, more affordable, and at least as scenic. The climate in this sheltered location is mild: There are even palm trees at the marina.
We came here mostly to relax, but we managed to take a look at the local castle, right behind the hotel, take a leisurely afternoon cruise on the lake, and explore the interesting hiking paths along the lake. The location of the Seegarten hotel is perfect, right at the most charming spot on the bay. Our spacious room offered a terrace overlooking the bay, facing nearby Mount Niesen. The service was impeccable, and the meals al fresco were delicious; we mostly had fish from the lake. We particularly enjoyed our late dinners as the nearby Alps were gleaming in the light of the setting sun.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with bay view and a terrace
