We booked this hotel through Thomson Platnum and arrived back on the 2nd October.
The hotel itself is fine, the room was clean, we had a fridge and the bathroom, only a shower, but a great one which worked well, not one of those hotel showers where you either freeze or scald for the first five minutes. The balcony although small was fine for two of us. We did not pay extra for a "sea" view, although many reviewers recommended one. We had a room faceing a small car park and the road. The view was not unpleasant at all, we had the late afternoon sunshine and the room was very quiet. Our opinion is that the sea view rooms would not have been so quiet, and with the position of the hotel and it being late September, some would have very little sun on the balcony. The staff were good and friendly, the bar was not expensive.
The meals were O.K. with a choice of salads, meats, warm or cold etc., and the chef made sure that none of the dishes "ran" out. We enjoy a bottle of wine, found our favourite, but were a little disappointed when our choice ran out on the 3rd day. The hotel was full, it is a large hotel. We went down for dinner early on the first couple of nights and were greated with a long long queue. In fact we were told to come back in half an hour as the restaurant was full when we eventually got to the door, then the head waiter did in fact find us a table. We decided to go down around 8.30 to 9.00, when things were quieter. But it was rather late for ourselves. When I say quieter, yes dinner was quieter, but for the children outside the dining room, presumably awaiting their parents to finish. Some travelling faster than the speed of light!!! The hotel states its request that men wear long trousers at dinner.......no....in many cases shorts flip flops and vests. The hotel is around 45 minutes pleasant walk from Cambrils. There is one bar Onades to the right of the hotel, which is fine if you want a spanish lunch, a friendly place. The main road the opposite way to Salou is depressing...but if you want to stretch your legs after dinner, the path beside the beach is fine both ways.
We spent the days on the beach, even though we had to pay for loungers and a sunshade,we found it better and more relaxing then the hotel pool. During your day you can safely leave your towels and walk to a beach bar for a snack or drink. ( they are closed in the evening, maybe again the time of the year). We noticed that a lot of the hotel clients had either brought the same beach towels, or obtained them from the hotel. We did not know beach towels could have been obtained from the hotel, beach towels take so much room in ones luggage. There were no parasols apart from two very large ones which were fixed, we suppose for anyone having a drink during the day or something from the daytime outside snack bar. Otherwise there was no shade around the pool.
Due to the situation of the hotel, we spent at least the biggest part of our evenings there. Some nights the entertainment was outside, sometimes inside in the large bar/lounge. When we were there the band played and even spoke in either German/Austrian/Swiss, we couldn't decide.
When we go on holiday we take in the country, I am not saying the band should have played totally spanish music, a mixture, yes, but this was not the case. Which brings me back to the seaview/pool rooms, I am so glad we did not have one, as they look over the entertainment area. The Flamenco dancers we really enjoyed, they entertained us one night for an hour or so, made us realise for a short time we were in fact in Spain. Then back to the usual.
The Plana buses are good, there is a bus stop outside the hotel and they take you where you want to go. So if you don't want to pay the price of a "tour" use the Plana bus. They have an office across the road from the hotel....we spent many a late afternoon counting the Plana buses up and down the road (sorry) but a great service.
Bikes can be hired from the hotel, but it is a case of get one, every man for himself, although you pay for your bike hire from the hotel.
The hotel itself, the staff etc., are fine maybe I did rate it a little below.....but it is a family hotel, a long but pleasant walk from Cambils, which is a lovely town with fish restaurants, and shopping in the old town. If we visit the area again we will stay in Cambrils. This hotel, although rated by Thomson as a Platnum hotel is not for couples, it is a family hotel, Thomson do say it caters for families, but we did not expect as many children as we found in the hotel....maybe we picked the wrong time to visit!!! We also did not expect the entertainment as we found it although Thomson do state they are he only english operator to book the hotel.
