“First class family hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

We keep going back to the Santa Monica hotel because we cant find a better place with the same level of service, hospitality, great fun, fabulous staff, very good food and an entertainment team second to none, led by the hilarious Fernando. And, it is extremely good value for money.

This was our 4th holiday here as a family group, and I have no idea why I have not reviewed it before, probably because I wanted to keep it a secret!!. I don't believe we have ever visited a hotel with such fab staff, Im' sure they combed Calella and beyond to find them.

The bar staff are very hard working and extremely efficient, yet are always smiling and joking. (Im sure they could get a job with the entertainment team). Wee witty Monica (favourite with the lads in our family, while Ray was the girls favourite), the lovely Carmen with an infectious laugh, and the 2 younger lads Vitali and Hose, the new kid on the block. Every one a joy.
The reception staff are friendly and organised and always ready to help. Angela is an absolute star, and nothing a problem, while Kate and Neil are also very helpful and all with a dry sense of humour which appeals to me.
The restaurant staff are also very hard working and friendly, and we seemed to have most contact with Ruben, Browley and a tall dark boy whose name I didn't get. Again friendly and efficient and ever helpful.
For a 3 star hotel the food was excellent, always loads of different fresh salads, and a huge array of fish chicken and beef, and the ice cream a delight.
Rooms nothing spectacular. but kept spotlessly clean with good beds, bed linen and towels.

The entertainment team are spectacular, and Fernando one of the funniest men on the planet, along with his entourage of Joelle, Dion, Juanita and Lilly. We met 'the boss' Xavier who is included in some of the bigger shows and who is also very funny and extremely gentlemanly. It takes a certain type!
They worked day and night putting on chic and professional shows and were absolutely brilliant with the children. Men v Women show and The Full Monty with audience participation was hilarious.
Overall for us this hotel scores a perfect 10.

Before booking this hotel I read the reviews on this site, and found them useful.
This is a great hotel, it is not a posh hotel, it is a practical hotel for families. And yes we liked it.
Just returned from a week all inclusive with two 15yr boys, an older teenage couple and us forty plus parents.
This hotel has been described as tired, I am not sure why. It has been painted and decorated the lobby and bar are modern and air conditioned. The rooms are basic and practical, and everywhere was very clean. The cleaners are cleaning all day.
Yes the walls are thin, but a little thought by other guests and it works ok. The worse thing is if you want to lie in until after 10.00am and the cleaners clean next door. I still managed to lie in.
Food I consider important on all inclusive, bar snacks most of the day except for period’s just prior too main meals and just after. They are burgers, toasted sandwiches, hot dogs, ice cream. Soft drinks, San Miguel, wines spirits, not a problem. The only thing I had a problem with and its petty I know but I like a pint glass and all inclusive only get halves, I do however understand why.
The meals were great plenty for everyone, and even for fussy kids and adults. I would suggest parents get your kids to try some of the items, as they taste like English food, just do not look like it. For those who like food, there is plenty of choice and it is tasty and there is always something new to try. The salad bar is Ok not great. The fruit choice is excellent as is deserts and ice cream.
The entertainment is excellent and a good laugh and the crew are very good. Bar staff and reception staffs are great.
The pool is clean and the area clean, usual problem with people taking sun beds leaving their towels and not using them.
Calella is a great town, and walks into hills very good. The town is clean pleasant and safe, and no hard sales at bars etc.
Beach is excellent, but can be deep.
Over all the staff helped make this, they are the best of any hotel in Europe I have stayed.
And for the last point in case Mr and Mrs older couple from Reading place a comment on any site. This couple were complaining they went to Spain in May and paid half the price of this hotel in July and that hotel was cheaper and nicer. It would be would it not.

Room Tip: Sea view, on floor six and above

Stayed half board during july, this is a 3 star hotel remember so dont expect 5 star treatment. The rooms were cleaned every day and towels changed also, i know a lot of people were complaining about the que to the restaurant but we went down at 8.45 everynight and walked straight in( i know you would'nt be able to do this with young children), the food was'nt brilliant everynight but there was always something i fancied and cant really knock it, cant comment on the evening entertainment as we were out in the resort every night. My one gripe about the restaurant is that the waiters are straight over changing the table next to you as soon as someone finishes( i found this both annoying and ignorant) All in all though it was a very pleasant stay and Calella itself is brilliant very old fashioned spanish style with cafe bars and old windy streets, not many english bars around which was a welcome change

I holidayed in the Santa Monica 24 years ago and to be fair it looks no different to back then, yes it needs a face lift and the rooms would benefit from an upgrade, but observing other Hotels in Calella it doesn't fair too badley, well positioned and Calella it a fabulous town to spend an evening.
The restaurant situation that some people experienced is valid, however out of our 10 night stay we queued maybe 3 times in the corridor outside and we went at all different times during the specified times..just luck i don't know. The food was varied and catered well for its multinational guests, (even though some of the European guests must have been very hungry as their plates were over full with fruits.. quite an eye opener, I would like to have seen fruit at the snack bar as a healthy snack option.

Now the entertainment, if your going to watch it you will not not be disappointed, the whole team work hard to entertain all ages, the shows these guys put on are fabulous sometimes hilarious but always family friendly.

A good 3 star. i would return and my 12 year old would love to aswell.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel do have a nice sea view.

Just returned from this Hotel after 1 week stay. Rooms are spotless, staff really nice especially Monica at the Bar, always had a smile on her face. Plenty of sunbeds available for everyone and the kids loved the pool. Breakfast - not much of a choice at all escpecially for kids but lunch and dinners really nice and good variety. Only downside was at dinner having to que for it. Tip for anyone going to this hotel wait until about 8.30pm before you go down or you will be standing for about half an hour, this is the only thing i would need to say the Hotel needs to sort out.

I have just returned from the Monica, I felt sorry for the staff as they work very hard & try to be helpful all the time but they are working in a building that is not fit for so many visitors.
There are ridiculous queues for the dining hall no matter what time you try to eat, except for maybe 7.30-7.45am breakfast.
The kitchen obviously works to a very small budget, as you only get a decent meal on Friday evening. However there is usually a good selection of fruit available.
There are only 2 lifts for 8 floors, they hold a max of 6 people & take a long time obviously.
The rooms have paper thin walls, this is a term I have seen used alot but in this case it is absolutely appropriate. They are so thin that you can hear people using the zips on their suitcases!
Very basic rooms, with 14" tv sets from the 90's but they are cleaned every day.

Overall this hotel reminded me of holidays as a kid with my parents in the 70's & school dinners.
I'm sure some people had a great time but if you are used to modern facilities you will be disappointed.

Dear DanButlerGatwick
We are sorry to hear that your were disappointed with various aspects of your stay with us at the Hotel Santa Monica.
At Med Playa we aim to offer our guests the very best possible holiday experience possible, and the majority of the feedback we receive for the Santa Monica is very positive, we are sorry that this is not the case in your opinion, but are pleased to hear that in spite of some disappointment, you were particularly complimentary about our staff, who are always keen to help and resolve any problems our guests experience.
We sincerely hope that your overall holiday in Calella was enjoyable

My first stay ever at this hotel, the room was good, good entertainment, and good food, near supermarkets and Beach, 15 minuttes walk to the Railway station if you want to go Barcelona and other Towns.
Only one minus. Too much que to the evning dinner, first to get into the restaurant, and after that you have to stand in que 10 to 15 minutter to get to the buffet
