We've stayed in HTOP hotels on numerous occasions, however this will be our last visit to one of their establishments! We booked and paid to go to The Amaika (a superior nearby hotel in the same chain) as we've stayed there before numerous times and really liked it. The agent then contacted us to say that The Amaika wasn't open and that we were to stay in The Calella Palace (AKA The Osiris) instead - which at time of our booking was much cheaper. It appeared there is nothing we could do and they wouldn't offer compensation either! So we decided to make the most of a bad situation and off we went.
Indeed, The Amaika was closed - boarded up in fact with the garden/pool area in a terrible state when we peeped over the fence!
We frequently holiday out of season in Spain so know what to expect from hotels at this time of year. As predicted the hotel is mostly frequented by Spanish pensioners and large groups of school children. No worries.
We love Calella - it's a lovely little place that sits on the train line down to Barcelona and up to Blanes. Ideal base for visiting the surrounding area. Even in the winter season, things are open. It's a bustling wee place and has a lovely beach to walk along too. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the town centre.
Very basic Spanish rooms. Clean however, and the maid came in each day to change the towels etc. The biggest issue is with the thickness of the walls!! We could hear the TV and conversations clearly from next door and even the gentleman next door snoring! We remembered this from our last visit to this hotel so were prepared with ear plugs!!
Applauding - and we're really not that fussy. Cold food. Dirty glasses, plates and cutlery. Not enough staff to clear the tables. We were there for 5 nights - the soup was chicken noodle and cream of vegetable every day. At times the dining area was crowded and noisy!
The bar is a very sterile and drab area. They put on music at 9pm each night - and you could watch the pensioners dancing. Good for them - and entertainment for us. The bar staff weren't very friendly and the card system is purely so they don't have to get anyone to clear glasses from the tables! No luxury at all! The wine was pleasant!
How this can be classed as a 4 star I really don't know! Last time we were there is was 3 star - very little had changed! We made the most of it and enjoyed seeing the area!
If you've already booked - get out and about to make the most of the lovely area.
If you're thinking about booking I wouldn't - avoid!
