“An intimate slice of the Dali and Gala's life, though overpriced.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Great for kids, he lived a little like the subject matter in his works - surrealistic rooms, twisty passages, bizarre stuffed animals. The house boasts a stuffed polar bear, eagle, rhino and several swans. A shrine of and for his ego. A whole room full of photos of himself flirting with the camera, wallpapering the room. Seems he lived knowing his home would become a shrine. If you don't mind a heavy dose of megalomania, expect it if you know him, then it's lots of fun. The walk to and from Cadaques is beautiful and a good part if the experience, too. Stop in at the Church of Sant Baldiri, at the apex of the hill on the way.

“Whimsy and wit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

Forget about using GPS to find it, but rest assured that it will be worth every minute spent driving up and down the muddy roads and narrow streets with no signs indicating where you are! Perhaps surviving the drive adds to the overall thrill! Dali and Gala's home by the sea offers an insight into their lives that simply cannot be conveyed by his works of art. Here you can sense the "daily Dali", so to speak -- a man of superb talent, abundant wit and a work of art in and of himself. Every room in this abode speaks of the inestimable experience of being part of the Dali household. Reservations (easily made on line) are a must, although we did hear the lady at the ticket booth make room for an unwitting tourist who had not realized that. The attendant gift shops are well-stocked with a variety of not-too-expensive items that allow one to take home more than a memory. This was definitely the highlight of our Dali trek to Spain.

“A must!”

Have not visited the larger museum in nearby Figures but Dali's former seaside home/studio is fascinating and well worth a visit.

“Mind altering”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

This was one of the high points of our 1 month vacation. After a nail biting 45 min. drive to Portlligat we arrived, parked and went to the house to get our tickets. You are greeted by a stuffed polar bear just inside the front door and it goes on from there. Dali connected 7 fishermen's cottages into a fascinating compound filled with his art and installations. He lived and worked here for 7 months of the year. While they say that it is not a "guided tour" you are taken around by a guide (Clear English was spoken by ours) and only get to spend 10 minutes in each area of the house. You then can spend as much time as you want in the outside area of the compound. The pool area was wonderful too. As soon as we left we wanted to go back in to see all that we know we must have missed.
