Originally I was looking to return to C'an Pastilla for this holiday but the Hotel Leo became very expensive, so after a re-think we opted for the Ola Club Panama in Palma Nova. We booked through Alpharooms about three weeks in advance. It worked out for us £21 each per day All-Inclusive so we thought it a very good deal. I searched many hotel sites and alpharooms were definitely the cheapest for our duration, and not by a small margin.
Arriving at the hotel, it looks very dated and tired, compared to other hotels in the immediate vicinity which are of the same age, and look much better maintained. 18 steps from the street down into reception - no ramp for disabled guests, so DO NOT book if you are at all infirm. The reception area is quite dark during the day, due to it being below street level. The staff speak firstly to you in French but they get to know you and greet you in English after that. Check-In was quick. Reception were efficient and helpful and pointed out the all-inclusive features and gave us wrist-bands and our room keys. I had asked for a high floor, I was given the 1st floor. The 1st floor is actually the second floor, due to reception being below groun d and the next floor is B-floor, then 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on. There are 6 steps up from reception to the lifts, again no ramps. A lot of previous reviews mention the steps around the hotel, however I'd like to point out also, a lot of the steps do not have hand-rails, including the main stairwells!
The room is large. They have had a bit of money spent on them, nice comfy double bed, and a sofa bed. We had a fridge, free of charge also. A lack of drawer space, but some shelving and plenty of hangers in the wardrobe do suffice. TV with CNN and BBC World, Air-Con (high season), would have been great to have. In May it got very close at night and it was hard to sleep. Bathroom is a bit on the small side but nicely tiled and a very powerful shower. Maids change your towels when you leave them in the shower tray, not on the towel rail. The Sliding balcony door did not look so secure, the locking mechanism barely latched. A safe is provided so you can protect your property. The balcony was quite large and the vast majority of the rooms face on the main road outside the hotel. Our room was directly above a bar called Pub Amigos, which seemed very loud at 2 am, to say only two tables were occupied . I found most of the guests on the lower floor were Brits, it seemed the higher floors and better views were reserved for the French
I would say that although in the past reviews have said this is a very French hotel, I found that maybe its half and half now. The Brits arrived in larger groups and really took advantage. Hens and Stags are just seeming to latch onto this hotel as a cheaper All-Inclusive option and still close enough to Magaluf for thier antics. Quite a few single sex groups, some just taking things to the extreme without consideration to others.
All of the activities were run by a French Animation team, but they do try to get you included, which seldom happened. The evening shows were in some cases quite odd. Someone wearing a nappy and spitting water at someone else, seemed to have the French in hysterics. The self-service bar was open from 10:00-23:00, They had quite and extensive range of spirits and mixers, it was possible to make your own cocktails. I would advise you to take your own re-usable plastic glass, as the hotel only provide tiny disposible ones. Sangria, white, red and rose wine is available on tap, along with beer on draught. There are also two slush machines. The snack bar consists of sliced bread, cheese slices, salami and tomatoes. Croissants, biscuits, donuts and two trays of crisps. You can also get small tubs of Ice cream from the freezer behind the snack bar.
Restaurant meals were good. Breakfast allowed for all tastes and fried eggs which were cooked properly were a bonus. The scrambled egg though was foul. There where charaf's available to fill with the wine of your choice for lunch and dinner. Food even for a picky eater like me was very good. We got our money back in food alone. Each sitting had a good choice, yes the dining room was a bit functional and canteen like but we did not pay 4* prices. It can be hard to get seated at most sittings, as I dont think the restaurant is really sized in line with the hotel. This seems to be the case with all of the public areas, which should have some money spent on them.
There is a min-golf course at the front of the hotel, but from a health and safety point of view it should be closed, no rails and its very easy for little kids to have an accident. The pool however did have a life-guard all day while the pool was open. The pool was clean but in need of some tiling in parts.
The location is excellent. only three minutes walk from the front of Palma Nova, passing one of the main bars - Banana Joes along the way. The beaches are beautifully clean and it made for a nice walk. We were there over Europa Day, when they closed a portion of the road off and had staffs set up and live music. It was probably the best day we had there. Went to Stadium bar but even though it says there are smoking and non-smoking areas, I still felt choked, and I found the manager rude as I was stood looking for a somewhere we could all sit together he asked me what I was drinking, I told him once I was seated I'd get something, his reply was, "well you could be stood there for half an hour!" A sign above the bar says all patrons must buy a drink, children included. The two acts we saw were Queen, very good and Abba Mia, hmmmmm! I would not go to the Stadium bar again.
Monroes bar, around the bay towards Magaluf was a bit better but mainly for the older clientel I felt.
Overall, I liked the location and the self-service All-Inclusive was good. The food was edible and fresh, so no complaints there. I just feel this is not a holiday hotel, it is a short-break single sex getaway hotel, with French familes on the side.
