Just returned from holiday first two weeks in September 2012 staying at the Son Matias Beach Hotel. There are so many mixed reviews about this hotel but my husband and myself agree that the good points certainly outweighed the bad. Firstly, we are in our early 70's and yes it is a hotel for us oldies but we had so many chats and laughs with fellow guests who did not seem to be a miserable lot - far from it we admired their determination to have a good time despite problems with walking and poor general health . Yes they did queue in the porch waiting for 9 am when the pool opened - we watched whilst we enjoyed a fantastic breakfast - but once they had secured their "spot" they all piled in for their own breakfast!! We managed to find beds and umbrella but we must admit that the pool temperature was quite chilly. We tried the beach and the sea was much warmer so we always went down on the beach after that. Two beds & one umbrella were 13.50 euros which is quite hefty and some of the beds have seen better days. Regarding meals, there was plenty of choice for breakfast, full fried with fried bread, tomatoes, bacon, sausages, even hash browns on a couple of occasions and eggs which were always cooked just right or there were cold meats and fruit, also fruit juice.Obviously toast and all trimmings. Cereals consisted of cornflakes, meusli, weetabix and very nice porridge.
As in all reviews the location is the main asset. Bus stop for Santa Ponsa and the other way to Palma outside the hotel,. 3 euros each way to Palma The beach is beautiful. We had a room on the 7th floor overlooking the bay and the sunrise every morning was wonderful. It was nice to have a kettle - just one word of warning, if you like English teas take your own teabags, their teabags make lousy tea. The staff were very friendly especially on reception and a special mention for our cleaner who was very thorough. We lost count of how many changes of bedding and towels we had over the two weeks. Also mentioned in other reviews is the noise from all night drunk party goers walking along the road outside from midnight onwards - take your earplugs otherwise you will never get a full night's sleep!!!
The evening meals were good and we didn't starve by any means but we were a bit surprised to see the repeat menue in the second week. In previous years at other hotels the menue was different for the second week.
All in all though it was a wonderful holiday.
7th floor was just right
