“Would stay here again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013 via mobile

Stayed here during the first two weeks of September. Rooms basic but had all that we required. Food ok & varied. The pool is very small but the beach is only seconds away so that didn't bother us. A great location & good place to stay for both young & old.

I booked this hotel after reading numerous reviews from last year and also checking the hotels own website. All i can now say is , Don't believe any of them.
Owned by " Gran Ilsa Hotels " and claiming to be a family hotel with lots of daytime activities for children and evening entertainment., all this has been moved to High Season by the new management with no indication of this on their website.
Breaking things down individually then,
FOOD: Basic and very repetitive. Pork, Chicken most nights just given a different name and always with chips. Fish selection was not too good either. Salad was ok and deserts were plentiful. Breakfast was generally fine with sausages and bacon daily, the only complaint though was the time it took to bring out fresh food when the trays were emptied.
However, we did hear of a few bouts of sickness when we were there and also 5 of the 7 people in our party were ill, 2 after eating the same meal. Read into this as you will.
The restaurant is quite small and their is not a lot of room between tables.
All in all i think the food could be improved greatly with a bit more variation for the children included.
Drinks were generally fine, except for the boxed cocktails.
ROOMS: Small, very dusty although they were cleaned daily. Beds were uncomfortable and changed only once during our 10 day stay. We were in room 315 which had a partial sea view from the side of the hotel above the bins. The towels were changed if required on a daily basis which was great.
POOL: Again very small and crammed with sunbeds so very difficult to get one as all were taken by the old folks staying at the hotel. There was also no room around the pool itself as the beds were so close to it, very dangerous in my opinion. This also caused a few issues, again with the old folks, when the kids splashed them from the pool. Oh, hang on, this is a family hotel so this sort of thing should be expected. Yeh, whatever.
STAFF: Generally very good given the tools they have to work with.
ENTERTAINMENT: NO daytime activities provided for children at all out of high season. NO evening entertainment provided for children at all out of high season, except for some young girl trying to do a so called mini disco on a few nights which was totally pathetic. Evening entertainment was aimed purely at the older generation.
We did complain about this and were told sorry but this is what we have.

Now for the other guests at the hotel. Hen party were fine and all polite keeping the noise downstairs. Older guests were generally ok except for a few Irish couples who looked upon several guests with children as if they had come out of the sewers, and some of the comments we heard were totally unacceptable.
And as for the large party of Swedish youngsters, what a bunch of ignorant, arrogant prats. Spent all their time drinking and making a lot of noise, even during the night. We again had to complain about the noise on a couple of occasions yet they were still allowed to carry on and take their own drink from outside the hotel up to their rooms and have parties in the early hours.
Now for the funny bit, although it was not funny for my 11 year old daughter and 7 year old nephew. One of these Swedish kids, i found out after that he was only 18, had been drinking solidly since he arrived the day before this incident including at breakfast time, attempted to square up to me in the lounge. He stumbled down the stairs wearing only his jeans and was clearly not on this planet, muttered a few words to me about the wear abouts of his friends and then proceeded to swear and threaten me in front of numerous guests. I only got concerned though when he raised his hands at which time he was dragged away by a member of staff and pinned against the wall. This was a snotty, drunk, arrogant, ignorant Swedish kid thinking he could take on the whole world, including me.
And to think we English are supposed to be the drunken louts.
In conclusion then, this is not a family hotel but has an excellent location in it's favour. I clearly believe the management are trying to cut costs and are also lowering thier standards in doing so. What was meant to be a family, beach holiday ended up being a VERY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT.

We have just returned from a girls weekend break to Palma Nova and stayed at the Tropico Playa. We arrived late and had a friendly greeting with our room ready and check in was easy and we were shown where to go for breakfast and for the pool bar. Room was basic but clean with a nice shower/bathroom.
It had a mixed group of people staying on our weekend but would not recommend for families as the pool is rather small and no day time entertainment for children also on our stay there were a few groups of young people and though we did not notice too much noise you could here them coming back from their nights out.
The food was nice and Pedro in the restaurant was really friendly and helpful. The bars were open between 10.30am - midnight and you never really had to wait at the bar to be served.
The location was good for the beach as just across the road so you can pop back for lunch and drinks. Also plenty of shops and bars nearby.
We had a great weekend away and though the hotel some may say is on the basic side we enjoyed it and would stay here again.

this our third visit to the Tropico was not a pleasant experience and the standards that we expected on arrival had disappeared. it was apparent that the hotel had been taken over by new management and staff who seemed to have set themselves very low standards to which they failed to meet. It was on the cards that there was going to be disappointment and upset, it was not long before I was proven correct. Arrived on sunday 12th may and by Wednesday my fears were proven by being in total agony with abdomoinal pains. we are mainly blaming the food hygiene for this but also the whole building and rooms we used were filthy and this must have also reflected in the kitchens. the main area which give the impression the hotel were horrid and dare to mention the vomit in the main area loos and felt public loos would have been more inviting. For my pains a doctor was called. I was paying but it seemed to me that he was in cohoots with tropco. In toatal I had to nearly pay up front £350.and there was no empathy from tropico at all. Im at home now and am still suffering from this terrible ordeal .seriously don't go if you can.

My family stayed in this hotel from 6th May until 20th May on arrival we met Saskia who was very unhelpful, We went to our room & were shocked at the state of the beds, you could feel every spring through the mattress & the room was very dusty as if it hadn't been used. We decided to have a look around to see where the pool was & play area was for my grandson who is 2, no play area but a small pool which was in the corner that we couldn't get to as the beds were so close together & were told by an older couple couldn't be used as it hadn't been cleaned.to cut a long story short this is not a family friendly hotel, we were told that they don't cater for under 3s but I would say most children are not catered for, there is no entertainment for them, it is all aimed at the older people, we spoke to our rep, as did a lot of other families & couples who agreed that the standard at this hotel has dropped drastically, even people who had been this hotel a few times have said they would not go back again. Pedro, Geraldine, lola & were brilliant & helpful, can not fault the staff.

Hi everyone! We stayed in Hotel Tropico one week, we came back last thursday. You somehow always expect a lot, even though the price you had payed is not so big! All that i can say is : the hotel was very ok if you think about the price you've paid! So dont expect too much because Tropico is not a 5 star hotel.

We arrive in the midnight and found the staff in the reception very friendy and helpfull.
When we found our room in the second floor, it was a little disappointment, because it seemed like the cleaning lady had forgot to clean it. There was lot of dirt under the beds and the smell in the room was bad :/ Beds ( i slept in extra bed, my mum and sister had better beds, we were in a 2 persons room, also it was really small room ) were really hard, especially mine!

But you get use to almost everything. You dont spent the holiday in your hotel room :)
That room was only not so nice thing in our trip, but there where many good things and then the room didnt feel so bad anymore :)
Good things were :

Location
Beach
Food
Most of the staff ( PEDRO! )
Weather
Shopping

So if you have 1 bad thing and many good thing you will survive :)
And still, remember the price you had payed, if its not so much, what can you expect?

Thank you Tropico Playa, we had a wonderful week with you, even though the room wasnt so charmy. I will come back to Mallorca again, but maybe i will find some place else to stay, because i want to see different places. But if i come back, i'll come to see you Pedro and say HELLO :)

We stayed for 12 nights commencing 2 May. The previous 4 reviews are generally very fair and I would generally agree with them. As one review mentioned there are 3 blocks in this hotel and the rear 2 blocks and the pool/pool bar and tv lounge can only be reached by a fight of 15 fairly steep steps, so beware if you have walking difficulties or toddlers in buggies. I am not a fussy eater but the food was mixed both excellent and at times indifferent, the fish was generally disappointing. similarly the evening entertainment , which starts at 10pm was mixed with too many silly movie quizzes and karaoke.

Pros
Superb location (the min selling point) opposite the beach close to shops and buses.
Very friendly hard working staff.
Spacious bedrooms, many with balcony and sea view.
Very generous measures of spirits not watered down but the cocktails come pre prepared in a box and are not freshly mixed.
Snacks, tea, coffee, drinks crisps, popcorn ,ice cream and delicious chocolate chip cookies in the afternoon at the pool bar.
Superb value for the price that we paid.
Many couples return every May and Sept/Oct.

Cons
15 steps up to pool bar and 2 rear blocks.
Apparently, there may not be any kids entertainment this year which disappointed a few couples during our stay. In previous years the hotel has had great kids entertainers.
Pool area is very small and too many sunbed jammed in makes it difficult to move, probably hard to get a sun bed in high season
No hair driers or tv in the bedrooms.
The furniture in the lounge is badly worn and uncomfortable to sit on and is apparently going to be replaced.
WiFi costs €5 per day or €20 per week and if you want high speed access the cost is 50% more. Note McDonalds across the road has free Wifi.
