“What a superb find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2011

We stayed 3 nights and the hotel was wonderful overall. Cons: No car parking. No sea view rooms - they call it 'lateral sea-view' - lean out and you may see it - very amusing. Bed was very uncomfortable. Pros: Breakfast is wonderful, amazing coffee, Cava, and you get a gorgeous view on the terrace. The hotel is huge and located in a great spot, very authentic Spanish hotel - lovely, the pool was wonderful, not too cold, good size, and easy getting a deckchair any time, nice garden, PADI diving, great private beach with as many towels as you need, and a terrific external restaurant next door on the beach - superb fish and amazing value. Lots of golfers seem to stay there. Big modern spa - indoor pool, lots of different spa rooms, sauna, a salt smelling room was interesting, steam, and all free to guest. We would stay there again if the beds were improved - this was really our only gripe. Otherwise it was superb.

Room Tip: Try and get a newer room - with carpet on floor. Probably on one or two can see the sea,

Excellent spa and gym facilities, very good access to the outdoor pool and the beach, very quiet location. Forget about everything else. The rooms are disgraceful.

We only stayed for three nights and loved it! All the staff were all really friendly and accomodating. The spa was lovely, three different steam rooms, sauna, special effect showers, jacuzi and indoor pool and all free to hotel guests. I had a massage on the first night which was tailored to my needs and didn't have to conform to what was offered in the brochure (massage and beauty treaments are extra but there are a good range from inexpensive to luxury). Some say the hotel decor is dated but I think this adds to it's charm, the communal areas are jam packed with beautiful furniture which sadly is hardly ever used but it looks amazing. Location was perfect it was only about twenty minutes transfer from the airport which was ideal for us as we were only staying a few nights. There is a lovely small beach with a jetty at the rear of the hotel as well as an outdoor pool (towels and sun beds provided). The main resort Palma Nova is a five minute walk away through a clearly sign posted side exit in the hotel. Rooms were just as you'd expect. We will definately be going back in the Spring for another short break.....can't wait!
The only slight negatives I would mention if I had to think of any, would be that the indoor pool could have been a bit warmer, and I would have liked to have been able to access the safe in the room without having to pay a deposit in order to get a key to activate it. The view from our room was not great but we hardly spent any time in the room anyway except to sleep.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear would have better views and the balcony doors didn't close very securely so I...

Rooms are ok but nothing great. The sound insulation between bedrooms was very poor.
Ac was effective and quiet.
The breakfast is great. You can even have a glass of Cava if you want :) The view from the breakfast terrace is stunning.
The hotel has beachtowel service, so you dont have to bring your own.
The garden and poolarea is beautiful. Dogs barking nearby is disturbing.
The staff is serviceminded and polite. The facilities are tasteful and clean.
Moste guests are adults. Would not recomand this hotel for families with young children.

I would like to say a huge THANKs to all the personell of the hotel. We were treated like with such a huge warm love that felt like home.
1. Front desk is helpful and smiling all the time.
2. One of the few hotels with quiet beach.
3. Excellent food in the restaurant.
4. All the personnel is professional and extremely helpful.
5. Not for young people.

Thank you for one of my best vacations!

This was my third visit in the past 2 years to the Son Caliu and that probably tells you a lot (I'm very fussy where I stay). The hotel like most has its good points and its bad points.

The bad points will probably be clear if you read a few of the other reviews but please bear in mind they aren't show stoppers, its not a particularly awe inspiring place to look at being a bit of a 60's block and is split into two buildings one with 5 floors and the other with 4, its had some sprucing up and has lovely gardens but the building itself still looks outdated .

Onto the rooms, most seem to have had a good amount of refurb although from what i've seen some are better than others... none however are what you would descride as grotty. The beds are a bit on the hard side but not to the point that they interrupted my sleep, I have a hard bed at home but the ones at the hotel take it to a whole new level! Bathrooms seem to have been done out to a nice standard but the shower in mine seemed incapable of maintaining a happy medium with the water temp either too hot or too cold. TV has a few british channels and wifi with signal in the rooms and public areas.

Now to the good points. The staff... in my visits I've not had a bad word to say about any of them from the friendly team on reception to the helpful restaurant staff to the always smiling cleaning ladies. I could go on. No sullen Spaniards here, everyone right from the manager who can regualrly be seen around the hotel to the aformentioned cleaners always seem happy to help. This and the general atmosphere of a happy ship seem to add to the general good feeling around the place.

Moving on the breakfast is out of this world and can either be had in the restaurant or you can move out on to the patio overlooking the pool/sea front. I ate myself stupid, there is everything you could possibly want to set you up for a day on the beach from freshly cooked for you bacon and eggs, cereals, fantastic fruit selection (the melons are out of this world), selection of breads, pastries, fantastic cured meats & cheeses and as much coffee and juice as you can physically drink.

The gardens and pool are great to lounge around during the day with plenty of sunloungers and the hotel has its own small private beach accesed from the pool area. This is nothing exciting in that its a sandy area bordered in conrete to the waters edge but they have instally a new jetty this year so you dont struggle walking out into the sea as its quite rocky under foot.

I dont want to go overboard with this review as I'd like to keep this place as my little secret, as I say, it may be a bit old fashioned but it just such a nice place to be. If you want nightlife Palmanova is a 5-10 minute walk out of the hotel back entrance so you can have the best of both worlds as the hotel itself is in a peacefull residential area.

We stayed here for a week at the end of August. Although not a bad hotel it's not the best place we've ever stayed. As the title of this review suggests, it is the spa that makes this an above average hotel.
On arriving at the hotel, around 12 o clock lunchtime) the first room we were allocated was less than impressive. Clean but very dark with old fashioned furnishings. This we could have coped with however the air conditioning was not working properly and was blowing out lukewarm air. It was an old style central air conditioning system. My husband went back to the front desk to ask for a different room however was told there was not a single room left in the hotel! They promised to send an engineer to look at the faulty air con. After a wait of about half an hour an engineer did arrive but despite his attempts the system could not be fixed and he told us to contact the manager. We returned to the front desk and were moved to a different room (which had miraculously become available). We asked for a newer room, having been unimpressed with the first one, but were told all rooms were the same. This is clearly not the case as the 2nd room, whilst still nothing special, was much lighter and modern than the first and had working air con. We had a view of the road outside and the mountains in the distance. It was not the worst view but far from a sea view. Having said that the sun hit the balcony early evening and was pleasant enough sitting watching the world go by. Other than that the room was unremarkable. It was clean which is the main thing but with the most uncomfortable beds. We would not have wanted to sleep on such hard mattresses for much more than a week.
We stayed bed and breakfast only so can only comment on the food at breakfast time which was mainly continental, with a limited selection of cooked items but plenty of choice - cereals, different breads, lots of pastries, fruit etc and, as others have mentioned, cava available each morning.
The highlight of the hotel for us was the spa. The indoor pool was a good size and there were several sauna and steam rooms all free to use. We are fairly frequent spa goers and sampled a couple of treatments which are available for an additional charge. We found them to be of good value, very reasonably priced and decent length of time. The spa staff were friendly and helpful – Jane and Katrine deserve a mention. The garden area at the back of the spa was also a good find, very comfortable loungers (more so than the beds in the rooms) and plenty of palm trees for shade. Although watch out for wasps! It was also very quiet as it is only accessed through the spa and most guests seemed to prefer to sit by the pool or on the beach.
The location of the hotel is in a quiet part of Palma Nova which was perfect for us but it was only a short walk to the livelier end if this is your preference. There were also plenty of restaurants within walking distance although we ate a couple of nights at the restaurant overlooking the private beach area at the back of the hotel. The service was not always the best but the food made up for it.
We hired a car for one day. There is a Europcar office in Magaluf (a short bus journey away) and we were able to get a car for our last day and drop it back at the airport the next day. We managed to see a lot of the island in one day and everywhere had free parking, even in the centre of Palma which was very impressive.
The buses are also great for getting around, very cheap and frequent. There is a bus stop less than 5 minutes from the hotel outside a fairly large supermarket.
Overall, we had a good, relaxing holiday and enjoyed the spa. We love Majorca and will definitely return to the Island but would be very unlikely to choose this hotel or Palma Nova again.
