This is an absolute gem of a hotel. Stunning views, beautifully kept grounds, spacious rooms, great breakfasts, lovely and helpful host... I'm not sure there's much they could do to improve it.

This is the second time we stayed here - the only time we have ever returned to the same hotel - and we'll definitely be coming back. That says it all really.

My wife and I have just returned home from a relaxing and pleasant stay at Sa Tanqueta in Fornalutx. This was our first trip to Fornalutx, but I suspect it won't be the last. This is a really peaceful corner of the world, with great scenery, friendly people and delicious food. At the hotel great attention is given to every detail, and we had a wonderful week here. Our room was spacious, clean and had a large terrace overlooking the mountains. The breakfast was very good and the staff both professional and friendly. We were even given a private tour of the farm of one of the hotel staff, with horses, orange-, citrus- and olive trees. A very nice experience! We recommend this hotel for everyone who want a beautiful, peaceful and harmonious break from ordinary life.

As part of our regular trips to Majorca we like to spend time in the Tramuntana Mountains combined with a different type of holiday near the sea. This year, in view of the glowing reports on Trip Advisor, we opted for three nights at Sa Tanqueta and if complete relaxation in lovely surroundings with perfect accomodation is what you enjoy this is the place. A beautiful apartment at the edge of Fornaluxt with all that you could require, we couldn't faut it ( and my husband is VERY hard to please!) We shall be back.........

It's a little off the beaten path, but totally worth the trek. Great food, service and accommodations. Oh, and the view.... no words can do it justice. If you can afford it and the Fornalutx area works for you, look no further - this is the place!

We chose Sa Tanqueta rather than the other three hotels in Fornalutx largely because it has on-site parking, a major advantage – also because the website made it look so attractive. The website did not exaggerate – if anything it was even more beautiful. It’s on the edge of the village but the village centre is only a couple of minutes fairly flat walk.

Built in 2003 but blending perfectly with the local architecture, Sa Tanqueta is described as an ‘apartment hotel’. Just to clarify what this means in practice – in each apartment there is a kitchen area with two hobs, refrigerator and dishwasher, together with all the crockery and cutlery you need. But breakfast is included – this is served downstairs on a sunny terrace. It’s an extensive and delicious breakfast buffet with cereal, fruit, continental style cheese/ham/bread, pastries and a hot option (usually eggs of some kind). Not to forget the amazing orange juice from their own orange orchards. We were pleased to be able to make ourselves one small meal each day while sampling restaurants all over the island for the main meal of the day.

We chose an apartment ‘without a terrace’ and asked for one with the best possible views. We were given No. 11 on the top floor, a spacious suite, light and airy, with main room and bedroom at the front and bathroom at the back. Spotlessly clean, as was the whole place. Although we didn’t have a balcony, both the living room and bedroom had fully opening full length windows (see hotel website for what these looked like) so we could stand or sit at the window and enjoy the fantastic views across the valley.

The owners checked in advance that the stairs to the top floor would be no problem. This was typical of their care and attention which was efficient and friendly throughout. Examples – due to a late flight we did not arrive until 10.30 p.m. We telephoned from the airport to warn them, but despite the late hour there was a lovely young man to meet us, give us orange juice and carry our bags up to our room. And at the end of the stay, we had to leave before breakfast for an early flight, so they prepared our choice of breakfast for us and brought it to our room the previous evening.

The pool area was beautiful with sunny and shady options for sitting, and always plenty of room. There was a copy of ‘The Times’ available every day together with a German newspaper, and as the other guests were mostly German we had ‘The Times’ more or less to ourselves.

One or two reviewers have mentioned some of the rooms being dark with views obscured by vegetation. We could see which rooms these are, and I could imagine them being very cool in the hottest months (there is air conditioning but we did not need to use it in mid-May). If you wish to avoid them I think you would just need to ask when booking if you could avoid the ground floor rooms, and check that you reserve a room with the best possible view.

The village of Fornalutx was beautiful. A real village with its own community, rather than a soulless resort. In the square is a small supermarket which was adequate for our everyday needs. Also a couple of cafes, and the restaurant ‘Café Med’ where we had our best meal of the holiday (best to book). We also ate at the ‘Es Turo’ up the hill, where the food was acceptable but nothing special. The path to Soller starts just along from Sa Tanqueta and is a lovely downhill walk of about 45 minutes. Uphill coming back of course, but you can always take a taxi! Go to Soller on Saturdays for the market, and take the tram to Port de Soller. We had a few expeditions – to Palma on the old wooden train, and, in the car, over to Formentor and Pollenca on the other side of the island. We also visited beautiful Deia – make sure you go down to the beach – and can thoroughly recommend the Restaurante Deia for a great meal on a shady terrace overlooking the valley, with warm and friendly service. One word of warning – driving in the north and west of Mallorca is not for the faint-hearted due to narrow roads, hairpin bends and constant need to avoid cyclists. Make sure your rental car is a small one!

All in all a great holiday in a fantastic location. The sun shone from beginning to end but Sa Tanqueta would be an extremely comfortable place to stay whatever the weather. We hope to return.

Sa Tanqueta hits all the high notes as a magical blend of 5 star resort hotel, B&B and vacation apartment rental.

This is the first hotel that I've given an across the board perfect score to. This review would be a 6.0 if something higher than a 5.0 was possible: So this is a first. I have to say a very big thank you to Fina and her family for earning this perfect score. It was MY pleasure!

What makes a perfect hotel? Well it starts with setting the expectations to a level that are quite high, but never-the-less are still exceeded. Perfection is the attention to those nagging details. In all my years of traveling professionally, and for pleasure, I have not come across a hotel (with the VERY close exceptions of the Shangri-la in Shanghai and the Conrad in Hong Kong) that had its act this together. Fina and family are unpretentiously excellent at their craft.

The Setting: WOW! Fornalutx is one of the best kept secrets of the Med. Hidden up in the mountains of the island of Mallorca, just around the corner from Soller, this little village just oozes character and calm with views to die for. It hits my perfection scale by offering sweeping mountain vistas that include palm trees, olive and orange groves. The clanging bells around the necks of the sheep as they make their way on the steep hillsides relaxes. Life is slower here. Even down in the “city” of Soller, which is a fun 50 minute walk through the woods, you notice that the drum beats slower, there is just more space between the tick and tock of the clock.

The Hotel: The email exchange when arranging the stay included the innocent question of when they could expect our arrival. It turns out that Fina is usually personally there to receive her guests and waves to you from down at the bottom of the drive when the gates swing open, letting you into your personal orange-groved enclave. She is standing there when you step out of the car and leads you into the perfect, yet simply appointed, reception/office area. You are asked to have a seat while the check-in details are taken care of and she then asks if you would like to have something to drink, “an orange juice perhaps?”. Take the orange juice! Like others have said, it's just great. I've lived in California and been to Florida more times than I would like to admit – but I've never had OJ that hit this mark.

After the formalities have been completed Fina explains a bit about the hotel, that they also refer to as “apartments” - very quaint, but make no mistake people, these aren't your typical vacation apartments. But I guess that's part of the expectation setting that plays with your psyche. On up to the room, and I could almost feel Fina's joy at watching our reaction to the view from our fully prepared room. The doors to the terrace on the 2nd floor (European 1st floor) were flung wide open and you are confronted with that spectacular view that is uniquely Fornalutx. On the walk to the room you here sounds of “Hotel California” running through your head as you take in the perfection that is Sa Tanqueta. This is the hotel that you don't want to check out of! Not a blossom out of place, no paint peeling, no dirt; clean, perfect, tidy and inviting. Lush vegetation with an attention to varied floral detail.

The room: We were in room number 9 which is a one bedroom apartment. The bedroom was a typical European double, which is basically two single beds each with their own bedding, pushed together to form a double. This is our preferred bedding set up and eliminates the battle for the blankets that occurs with the standard American type set up. In the bedroom there were two large closets with plenty of wooden hangers and shelves, as well as an electronic safe big enough to lock my net book away with space to spare. All of the windows have working wooden shutters so that you could open the windows wide, close the shutters against the sun, and still have air coming in. Have no fear, the rooms are outfitted with modern air conditioners. One in the bedroom and one in the living/dining room. They are both managed with one remote control and were easy to turn on, set the temperature and shut-off. The environmentally friendly hotel has an automatic air-con shut-off, should you decide to open the windows or balcony door. The living room / dining room / kitchenette is like a small studio flat, one area of the room has a TV, large coffee table and two comfortable rattan lounge chairs. In the other corner of the room there is a dining room table and two chairs. A small kitchenette with two burner ceramic range (hob), refrigerator, coffee machine, dish washer, sink and all the utensils, pots and pans, plates you could possibly need.

The bathroom is fully equipped with a bidet, bath/shower unit and that all important magnifying mirror. “Don't forget to tell about the mirror!”, my wife has said about 10 times now. Funny, but it's the ability for her to put on her makeup, sans eyeglasses, in the morning that makes her day. If the hotel has a magnifying mirror, like Sa Tanqueta, then her day, and mine, starts much smoother than without. So thank you again Sa Tanqueta.

Things we really liked:

The fact that the hotel, even though it is relatively new (2003), blends in perfectly with the landscape and the older buildings of the village. The furnishings are not cookie cutter, but selected to match the room and the ambiance. The building looks as if it has always stood there.

The braying of the donkey over on the other side of the valley. I don't know why, but his (or her) imperfect braying mornings and evenings always made me smile.

The breakfast spread. Everyday it was just a bit different. I told Fina this was one of the details I liked and she tilted her head and replied, “it would be boring otherwise, or?”. This is what most hotels forget. They forget about the guest and think of standardization. Thankfully, the standardization at this hotel is limited to an unwaivering commitment to the customer-is-king rule, cleanliness and perfect maintenance.

Fina's 20 years of hotel experience at various hotels around the island, shines in this family owned hotel. Sa Tanqueta is certainly a hotel of much smaller dimensions than what she and her family are capable of handling.
