just back. we knew it was 3* but have never been asked to pay for tv remote..tv was anceint so no /paid for fridge but no kettle available. no toiletries provided towels ike sandpaper sheet threadbare but spotless/air con perfect. hotel is prime site opp beach nice balcony overlooking it .
breakfast was awful/ you have to set your own table/ food plentiful but cold or undercooked/husband thought it was like a jail.
staff at reception were friendly and helpful. I think the apartments might be better choice.
we were h/b but breakfast put us off so we ate out as there are good choices near by

We stayed at the hotel rather than the apartments. half board and booked a sea view. We stayed there early September 2012 for a week. We had a nice room with a great view from the private balcony overlooking Cala Gran Beach. The room was basic but clean. We were disappointed it did not have a fridge or tea and coffee making facilities. We asked and were loaned a travel kettle but had to scrounge cups etc from dining room. Also because there was no fridge, milk went off so quickly. Also had no hairdryer so again had to ask and was loaned a tiny travel one for 10 euro returnable deposit. Staff were always polite and helpful. Cleaners did great job, plenty of towel changes. Great location right on the beach practically and we could stroll into resort within minutes. Also bus stop outside hotel for days out. Biggest disappointment was the food which we struggled to find anything nice to eat! Generally food was fatty, overcooked and stodgy. There were salads but these looked so unappetising we did not bother, so much raw onion and tons of mayonnaise on things. Dessert not much better, huge bland mousses with token scattering of fruit, they id serve fresh melon one evening which was nice. Fruit juices and coffee from machines and tasted powdery...yuk...We both had stomach upsets within a few days of arrival. I ended up going to supermarket to buy good quality fruit and salad ingredients. Decor tired as previous reviewers have said. Air conditioning was good and worked well. TV old fashioned but had 2 british channels. Evening entertainment each night laid on at poolside but very limited seating. We usually chose to go into town instead. Hotel seemed very busy when we were there, mainly british and german guests with a few french too from what I could see. I would only recomend this hotel if you did not have food option , they installed fridges and a sea view was guaranteed.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room at hotel, not apartments. all sea view rooms looked to have good view.

Just back from cala gran on sat 15th september, when we arrived we were put in an apartment at the very back of the hotel, with lots of steps, it was dirty and not up to standard, we complained and asked to be moved, they told us we requested a high floor and pool view, yex if there was a lift it wouldnt be a problem, plus the apartment was dirty, they eventually put us in another aparmtent nearer the hotel which we were happy with, the number of the first apartment was d7, so avoid this at all cost, we also were all inclusive, but even from the second apartment we could only get drinks from a small bar which was still a bit to walk, there was only food in the hotel which was furthera= away, also we had to have our meals in the hotel next to it and had to walk through a covered walkway to get meals, then on our last night we went for some alcoholic drinks and all of them except beer were half price for people who were all inclusive, which is a disgrace, while the area was lovely and main hotel was clean it was a bit much for us, also food very repetitive if you like salads you would be ok, also maids dont even knock the door when cles=aning, the keys are normal door keys, and one walked in when i was getting ready to go out and just stared and walked out, i think the hotel has to address these faults, so anyone wishing to go here be prepared

Room Tip: dont go to block 7 as its like a prison, cramped and dull

We got what we paid for, a cheap relaxing break in the sun. The hotel was clean but tired and basic. The all inclusive package was probably not worth it. I would suggest you find a self catering for this resort as the restaurants around were plenty, varied and most were reasonably priced. The food was acceptable if you don't mind cheap, badly cooked stuff! I am probably being a bit mean as I could usually find stuff to eat but it wasn't the best. The other thing was you only had an hour in which to eat breakfast/lunch/dinner. If you missed that, you got chips/burgers/salad that type of thing in between (only during the day, if you missed the evening meal tough). I missed being able to get a basic sandwich or healthier snack.
The staff were nice enough and fairly helpful. Cleaners a bit eager when trying to get a lie in in the morning.
The main gripe with this place was the noise. The rooms were not very sound proofed and every step, conversation down the corridor, every door slamming, every vehicle arriving (we got a room with a view of the road!) even others bathroom habits were heard.
There was one adequate pool area but even then on a busy day the sun loungers were scarce. If you wanted drinks, you had to stay at the one pool as there wasn't a bar at the other so it was a long walk to get a drink.
So all in all, if you want a basic trip to the sunshine and you want a bed for the night and that's it, I'd recommend this hotel. For anything luxurious or even above average, look elsewhere.

My husband and I have just spent the first week in September in the Cala Gran apartments.
( Gavimar) The soft furnishings were a bit tired and could do with updating but this did not detract from an enjoyable stay. We stayed on an all inclusive basis and found the food to be of a good standard with plenty of choice. The red and white wine and also the beer was very palatable. There were plenty of other free drinks on offer, though some of them were chargeable at half price.
The apartments were surrounding a pool and there were plenty of sunbeds. A resort favoured mainly by Germans and British guests.
A small train goes to several of the bays nearby , costing 2 euros one way and the actual beach at Cala D'Or is ony a few minutes away on foot. This is smaller than Cala Gran, where the hotel was, and has beautiful clear water.
There were several large rooms, well furnished where you could escape for a quiet time
and plenty of games areas for children.
All in all a good hotel and very helpful staff.
If I was going again,( being in my 60's) I would go during the second week of Sept and in the first week there are still lots of children on holiday.
Very good for a 3 star.

Room Tip: Our room was no 5 and was bright and sunny

We stayed here on an all inclusive deal, for 2 weeks via Thomas cook. The hotel location is perfect and close to all the restaurants clubs and of course shops and the Beach.

the Hotel is kept clean and the overall standard of food and service is very good, the staff go out of their way to help if they can although sometimes language can be a barrier.

The Positives.
the food is varied and there is a reasonable choice but an extra meat dish wouldn't go amiss each night as if you didn't say eat pork it would only leave you a fish dish or salad the preparation of food was good and most dishes were kept hot or cold as required at no point did any of my party suffer from any stomach upsets (which was a bonus).

The Room was basic and clean the beds were ok although a little worn the rooms could do with a bit of modernisation but for the money i didn't expect much different especially as this hotel was one of the first in built cala D'Or.

The air conditioning worked perfectly keeping us cool at night.
the all inclusive package was reasonably good food and drinks available for minimum 12 hours a day at 2 bars drinks after 12pm are half normal price and none of the alcohol was watered down in any shape or form.

the Spanish dancers were superb and gala meal night is worth every penny.
there is tons of night life close to the hotel for those who want it and some excellent restaurants as well.

The Negatives
Charges for following
very basic entertainment (plenty of other night life close by).
TV controller (only 2 english channels in rooms) 15 euros per week
Fridge in Room 40 Euros per week (not good enough when you have meds that need to be kept in fridge)
No free bottled water (costs less than euro outside hotel)
a Thomas Cook rep who wasn't interested if you didn't want any of their pricey trips and deliberately ignored me on at least 2 occasions when asking questions.

The beach although beautiful is so overcrowded its unbelievable especially at the weekends
when it seems 2/3rds of Cala D'Or are on it.
insufficient sunbeds and the pool needs monitoring more closely chemical wise as quite a few children were complaining of minor ear infections caused by bacteria from pools i tested the water with a kit i take with me and it showed low levels of chlorine for the sake of a few pence this could easily be rectified and would prevent a lot of discomfort for kids.

In Conclusion

Good 3 star hotel showing its age but nothing that couldn't be easily fixed
above average food, drink and service and cleanliness.
excellent location for all night life and the town itself.
apart from niggles there were no serious problems as the title says you get what you pay for.
and ill possibly visit it again in the future.

Room Tip: top floor Corner suites are large and have sea views or good views over Town.

We stayed here on an all inclusive deal, for 2 weeks. The hotel location is perfect, right opposite the gorgeous coved beach. The Hotel is clean and the staff are very friendly, especially the waiting staff in the dining room who gave excellent service.

The meals were a good standard, you'll never go hungry - although the selection was a bit repetitive and samey (and they do seem to like to put Pork on the menu quite a lot, mostly every day!!)

However, the Hotel is very dated and tired in parts - and in need of a lick of paint or two. Some of the balastrads near the lift areas and metal steps down into the pool (decked pool nearest the dining room) were very loose and not safe, even causing injury to some guests. There are far too few sun loungers in the pool areas for the amount of guests that the hotel accomodates. The pool areas are very small and the 4 pools themselves are very tiny, not good if you like a proper swim rather than a dip.

The hotel does not provide bottled water which you would expect from an all inclusive hotel, you are given water in small plastic cups which is not ideal. There are no fridges in the rooms or hairdryers, again this is usually standard with all inclusive packages. There is a TV in the room but you have to pay for the remote control at the reception to be able to watch it. Also you have to pay for the Safe too. These are hidded costs that have always been part of the deal with every all inclusive package holiday I've booked previously. The pillows are very thin so you may need to ask for more as we did, and the Balcony doors did not lock which was a bit of a concern.

All in all the hotel is what you would expect from a 3*, pleasant but with a few changes needed to update and modernise it.

Room Tip: If there are 3 people sharing a room, make sure you request the bigger twin rooms rather than the st...
