“Staff need to re-train asap AND smile (all except one lady)!!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

My first visit to Majorca and I loved Cala 'or but not this hotel. Manager was glum from first meeting (as mentioned by Charlie S), the staff were rude and unhelpful. When we found our way to breakfast (Manager couldnt be bothered to show/point it to us on arrival), we were greeted by miserable staff, who shuffled about ready to reprimand you. One morning we ate our food (basic but tasted ok), then picked up an apple to eat on our way. "No, not possible!!!!" Was screamed at us!! She then pointed to the daily menu/weather note on each table telling us that no food could be eaten around the pool (unless you buy from the bar of course!!!!!). We left, everyone glaring at us as if we'd stolen the cooks' tip box!!! She did this to other guests too - absurb and unnecessary.

Everything was too much trouble, they even wanted to charge you for ice or a plastic cup (for use in our room at lunch time). There is a 'Happy Hour' but they didn't like to advertise this - cos 1. they had to give you a free drink AND 2. they were meant to be happy!!) One day when we were sunbathing by the pool, one staff member kicked the sunbeds, growled about them being in the way then proceeded to escort/point new guests to their rooms!! Nice. When we complained to glum manager about her rude staff, she didn't care less, just shrugged her shoulders. "Customer satisfaction?!" Not at this hotel. Two stars?!? Ummm that's far too high.

Rooms are basic and need updating. Staff need training - BIG TIME!! Spar across the road was very handy being Hotel D'or is 'just a b&b' so they hate you bringing in food. Local area is superb. We found a fabulous Italian Restaurant (Mamma Mia) 5 minutes away = Great food, great staff, great prices. Beaches were a 10-15 minute stroll away and were beautiful. Would love to return to this area again - obviously not to this hotel!!!! Only one staff member (cleaner/mgrs assistant/ barmaid) was fantastic. She was cheerful, helpful, always chatty and happily enjoyed 'Happy Hour' with all the other guests.

We have travelled all over the world and never experienced such poor service, so felt we should comment.

Room Tip: We were in room 109 - quiet and near pool.

We booked this hotel based on TA reviews and the fact that we did not want to book a " large" hotel. The hotel is good value, rooms basic but clean, breakfast very good selection, our room 410 overlooked a bar which was very noisy with loud music until 3.00/4.00am.
The staff need some training in customer service, I do not think I saw a smile in the 5 days we stayed,I know it is coming towards the end of the season but it is their job and staff can make or break a hotel. When we arrived the Receptionist/Manager could not have been more "Glum", she gave us our room details and pointed us in the direction of the rooms, no information regarding safe deposit boxes, breakfast times, where breakfast was served or times the premises shut if you were arriving back late at night, we were given an envelope with a welcome note which was useless, it even explained how the electricity operated by putting your room key card in either of two slots in the room. Someone needs to tell the manager that there are no slots in Rooms 410 or 409. I tried to operate the safe deposit box in the room for nearly an hour, following the instructions on the box, I eventually went to reception to be told I needed my key card programmed and pay 16 euros/week, after it was programmed it still did not work, I returned to tell the receptionist, she asked if the lights were working I said no, she asked again were the lights working, again I told her no, she then said she would get the maintenance man to look at it. I decided to use the safe in my brother's room and get my payment refunded, which I do not think the receptionist was very happy about. Two mornings in the breakfast room were a bit of a farce, saturday morning there was not anyone clearing tables for an hour, people were coming in not knowing where to sit, eventually the receptionist/manager and a maid came in to clear tables, they did not look happy. The following morning a young girl was clearing tables, another member of staff that did not look happy, but she done her job well. Monday morning again no one to clear tables, once again another member was drafted in, not very happy, dropped plates and smashed in dining room also plates dropped in kitchen. As a previous review commented, we were leaving our room at 4.00 pm on the Monday, we asked on our first day if we could keep one of our rooms on and was told she could not tell us until Monday. Monday came at 9.00am we asked about keeping the room on, was told could not answer come back in 10 minutes after 20 minutes went back and asked again and was told " NOT POSSIBLE", no offer of another room for facilities just told to put cases in TV lounge. Our room was still not occupied at 4.00 pm. I know the room had to be cleaned, but we were prepared to pay extra for keeping the room on as we have done in every hotel we have ever stayed in and we have ALWAYS been accomodated. The hotel is good value but we would not return as we feel that staff can either make you feel good about your stay or totally put you off, unfortunately the attitude of and demeanour of the staff did not make us feel that we wanted to return. Unfortunate, but it could be so much better by just a smile and some customer service skills. I would like to comment that my comments regarding staff does mot apply to the chef, who works extremely hard on his own.

Room Tip: Rooms to the left of reception as you face the pool.

stayed in D'or hotel in September for the 3rd year running. it is a loveley small hotel with a nice pool and bar area. the rooms are a bit dated but well worth the price you pay and spotlessly clean. all the staff are great and the breakfast is very good and freshly cooked by Jose with a good variety of hot and cold food. the hotel is very close to the town and about 5 minutes from the nearest beach. Guests get discount at some local restaurants and bars and the food in Don Leones was fabulous. will be back next year

we usually do a package holiday most often with thomsons but this year money was tight so decided to go independently.booked last minute flight with thomsons from manchester and the accomodation and transfer through alpharooms. Cost £750 for 2 of us not bad!!much cheaper than a package.Good flight and no problems with transfers through quick travel arrived at hotel mid morning . Unfortunatly no room available 1st night so asked if we would mind spending night at sa marina hotel next door . this was fine plush 4 *had alovely apt but not for us as full of small crying chidren.Weenjoyed complementary bowl of fruit though and lovely breakfast !!We returned to dor hotel to find our room readywe were given 407 with terrace overlooking pool perfect!!!.Now as others have stated rooms are basic but perfectly acceptable and very clean in fact the smell of bleach was overpowering but very reassuring.the mattresses also clean if somewhat firm for my taste and the mattress protector a little crunchy. aircon worked well and shower powerful , however could not get any english channels on tv though others could . Not abig issue for us as we dont come on holiday to watch telly. pool area lovely peaceful nice atmosphere intermittently punctured by noise from a couple of babies but not really problematic. The nearby coves were lovely but you would have to get there early to get a sunbed we were not able to get one so lay on our towels but personel space was at a premium . seawater lovely warm and clear. We enjoyed the starfish boat trip to cala mondrago reasonable value at 20 euros each and had a lovely lunch at beachbar overlooking beautiful bay. The resort itself felt very safe and seemed to appeal to both families and couples but very few groups of singles as no raucous nightlife . Never had a bad meal although some distincly average . Our favourites were Diferent were we had asian food that was very tasty . La bogega for tapas were they have a guy playing spanish guitar fantastic food and very atmospheric. Fernandos we went to twice the 2nd time to celebrate my 50th birthday and enjoyed some very tasty food good service and lovely ambience though not cheap at over 100 euros but this was for 3 courses including wine and water.we also loved cafe plaza for lovely coffee and after dinner drinks and perfectly placed for a spot of people watching . All in all very enjoyable and would definatly go again if we could secure another value for money deal. However just one word of warning the hotel is situated near a music club which was not a problem until the saturday night when it filled up with spanish people and was still in full swing at 6am when we were getting up for return transfer after a poor nights sleep

Room Tip: rooms overlooking pool are lovely but our side 407 did not get any sun on terrace

This was our first time to Majorca, and for our first holiday there it was pretty alright,
On arrival we went into reception where we were greeted with a smile by the receptionist who told us our room was ready straight away, we were in the block to the right as you go to the pool area, room 109.
The room is very basic in this block and appeared we had one of the smaller ones too, our floor space was minimal compare to adjacent rooms. nevertheless it was clean, had air conditioning, a balcony (but with only one sunbed per balcony which is beyond me as the rooms sleep 2!!!) overlooking the mountains at the front of the hotel, but next to the road. Once patio doors were shut there was no road noise so i dont know why people complain about the road we had no problems.
We loved the fact that we went Thurs-Thurs as it meant we got the cleaners there every day (thurs is their day off general cleans)
The hotel is DIRECTLY opposite the local Spar supermarket which was great for us penny pinchers as wasnt gonna pay the beer price downstairs in the snack bar so went across for a litre of san miguel chilled for 1.50E and bought our own plastic cups to drink them out of :D
Breakfast in the morning was great, had the cereal i like, toast, croissants, muffins, coffee and juice. and the cooked breakfast mark likes he enjoyed every day.
The restaurant Don Leone... well... we found it fantastic. for Half board you get the three courses included, each day is a different menu so you get the variation. Some days there was one course on the menu i didn't particularly like so i asked for something else basic instead like a garlic bread and the kind gentlemen said this was no problem and swapped it for me no charge. (the guy does seem little abrupt even rude but he REALLY isn't its just the language barrier and personality. our meals were beautifully cooked, and served by the mountains of staff they have on, who coincidentally you see running the hotel reception and bar during the day, how you guys do it I don't know but Very Well Done!!
We HAD to venture one or two nights though away from the half board as the other restaurants are so tempting but steer clear of Restaurant Mamma Mia, not to far round the corner from the hotel, the man either owning or running it is Rude, abrupt and refused to place my 21E bill onto my debit card claiming "there was no profit in it for him to take that payment", and walked off, so i had to go across to the Santander nearby to draw out the money.. So his tip payed the rest of the meal cost off instead.
The beach Cala Gran is not too far away, down past lots of Restaurant and Bars and is a small beach compact but what an enjoyment, we bought snorkles and a lilo (which been meaning to get for years but this water and beach really pushed it this time) Fish everywhere, take a Wine Cork down with you and throw it about in water you will get LOADS of them all swimming around you, amazing. Get their early as space is limited on the sand even for towel, but their are sunbeds to use there too for a charge.
On checking out day however is where our main concern is and made our last day pretty AWFUL. Our flight was at 11.15pm at night and check out was supposed to be at 12pm reception said.. at 10am a knock on the door by a main who spoke actually very little English said were we ready, i said no we have till 12 she looked confused and went off.. she came back at 11am an hour later same thing.. was like .. fine we will get out, (we were previously refused the room for longer that day even if we paid too as they were Fully Booked) we dragged cases downstairs to the snack bar and was told we could place bags downstairs in tv room. This TV room is not secure no locks it is where people are FREQUENTLY passing to use the toilets there so this meant we could go NOWHERE on our last day and hung around for 9 hours without a room. the TV room also has no working TV in it.. the electrics are shot in there, couldnt charge my phone or tablet whilst playing on them as there was not much else we could do had the bags been safely locked away in a room somewhere.. this the Hotel D'or staff need looking into as this is very bad and they do not even offer a room to shower n change in before the airport even. This did put a downer on the last day of our holiday before having to return to work the following day.

Hotel: great location, rooms were basic but clean & beds comfortable - cleaners were always smiley & polite - perfect for our needs. Always a good selection for breakfast but some of the tables a bit cosy. Manager happy on first day but sadly wasn't consistant over the rest of the week. Staff were snappy & strict, even got told off for filling water bottle up & 1 lady got chased for taking an apple out of the breakfast room, however there was 1 member of staff who smiled!! Apart from that I'd recommend the hotel just ignore the staff.
