I have never been compelled to write a review of our holidays but having just returned from a 10-night stay at the fantastic Sa Marina Hotel I just felt I had to on this occasion. This was our first holiday with our 11-month old daughter so we left home with some trepidation as to how well or otherwise the trip would go. We needn't have worried at all. We travelled to the Sa Marina with Thomson on a half board basis and in short the hotel is absolutely brilliant in every respect. I had read the Sa Marina reviews on Trip Advisor before travelling, which I have always found to be very accurate, and definitely selected the best hotel in Cala d'or (from what we saw and heard).
We arrived around midday and our room was ready; check-in was very prompt yet gave us all the info we needed. The hotel staff were always so helpful and polite, and were fabulous with our daughter. The facilities for our little one were great, highchairs everywhere and baby changing in all toilets. Staff would warm up her bottles when we wanted to feed her in the restaurant and always laid a place setting for her. We stayed in the same apartment block where the reception is located overlooking the smaller pool area, and found it to be very quiet both during the day and night, however, it didn't seem as though the hotel was at full capacity - the resort itself was also quiet during the day, but came to life at night - centred around restaurants and bars rather than nightclubs. We didn't see any of the hotel entertainment at night as we liked to get our little one to bed
We never had any problems getting sunbeds late morning or finding a table for breakfast (8am-10:30pm)/dinner (7-9:30pm). We used the hotel towels (30 Euros deposit - keep your receipt) which can be changed daily if you like 8am-8pm. The only slight quibble about our room (1227) was that it was located next to the elevator shaft so there was some noise when they were in use, however, we didn't find it troublesome, although if you/your children are light sleepers it may be a problem.
My husband also used the gym (open 8am-8pm) and he commented that it wasn't great in terms of the range and condition (age) of the equipment but it was adequate for a decent workout.
The apartment itself was extremely well equipped with more than enough space for the three of us, even with far too much luggage(!), buggy and travel cot. The balcony is lovely and spacious - perfect for enjoying a glass of sangria or two(!) once the baby was asleep, and there is a drying rail for washing. Plenty of wardrobe space in the bedroom and hallway. The key-operated safe is located in the bedroom wardrobe which I think cost us around 36 Euros for our stay which included a 3 Euro deposit for the key. The hotel had put a travel cot in the room for us (in the lounge area) but I had previously read about the charge for this so decided to take our own. The hotel cot was OK but very well used so we wouldn't have been happy putting our daughter in it but that's just our personal preference.
The kitchen was excellent with all cookware/utensils etc that one would need if staying self-catering; not a great deal of work-top space but you can always use the dining room table. Would benefit from a microwave (would have been handy for us sterilising bottles etc ) but can work around this (I took a travel plug-in steam steriliser from Mothercare which worked fine). Maid service was excellent (five times per week but you could always ask at reception if you needed anything on the days that they did not visit), indeed the hotel is immaculately clean. You can ask for a highchair in your apartment too but again they charge for this (think it was 2 Euros per day) so we did without.
Every week the hotel have a Gala Dinner and you are invited to drinks (glass of cava) with the Manager beforehand, in fact the Manager was there most morning's and evening's greeting guests at the restaurant and checking that everything was OK which was nice to see. We thoroughly enjoyed the food at the hotel, particularly the breakfast (complimentary cava available every morning!) and never struggled to fill our plates - there was some repetition but that was not a problem for us as it was so nice. We used the on-site snack bar on the day we arrived for convenience and it was also very good however, a little expensive. After that we used restaurants in the resort centre, of which there are many, just a short walk from the hotel (5 mins). We also walked to the Marina one afternoon which took around 15 minutes which was also lovely (more expensive though). All restaurants are child-friendly offering highchairs and kid's menus.
There are two main beaches near the hotel: Cala Gran and Cala Esmeralda; we only visited Cala Gran which is the largest of the two and it was great, although quite busy. Ask at reception for directions and they will give you a map of the local area. It took around 10 minutes to get there.
For all your grocery needs there is a Spar supermarket virtually across the road from the hotel which stocks just about everything you could possibly need, lots of English branded goods too, although these are much more expensive as you would expect. We found this supermarket much bigger and better than those in the resort centre. Good range of baby products: nappies, wipes, jars of baby food (Heinz Mum's Own, HIPP), ready-made & powdered formula milk (Cow & Gate 1, 2 & 3), baby juices etc, plus they have two brands of mineral water that can be used for preparing babies bottles if using powdered formula - one was called Zoya (I think!), it is with all the other mineral waters, it is a Spanish brand but you will see it has a little picture of a babies bottle on the side and it has a very very low sodium content (the lowest we found). The other brand is in cartons near the baby products but probably wouldn't be as cost effective as the bottled water.
We simply cannot praise this hotel enough and would definitely return in the very near future - it is very family-orientated as is the resort. Hope this review helps for those travelling with a young baby.
